Where There’s Life, There’s Hope.

Chapter Ten.

Mikey wasn’t expecting to see Frank Iero again after years of being apart. He especially didn’t expect to find him in almost the exact same manner as how they’d met. Minus the impending doom of him killing himself of course. Well, actually...from where Mikey was standing it sure looked like Frank was trying to break his skull open against the brick wall in front of him. Quietly, Mikey made his way to Ray to begin questioning him, already knowing far too well that it was probably something his idiotic brother had done.
“What happened?” he whispered, trying not to alarm Frank who was still too pre-occupied with his own self-loathing to notice he’d appeared.
“Frank-oh-uh- he’s our guitarist-the other one, I mean. He’s just having a complete melt down! I don’t know what to do. I tried to intervene and dude...I don’t even know what fucking set him off.” Ray rushed, his words spilling out of his mouth in a clumsy manner, intermingling with one another before the last one had completely finished.
“What’s the last thing that happened, before he started melting down?” Mikey asked, trying to remain calm, looking at Frank with sad eyes. Things were just like old times.....Frank was still the same. That’s what made Mikey more upset than anything at the sight of him kneeling by the brick building sobbing.
“Uh...Gerard had come out and spoke to him. That’s all I know, I was still in by Matt. They both claimed they needed a smoke...”
“Seriously?” he groaned in return. Mikey was a firm believer in the fact that people could change. Up until today he didn’t have any reason not to believe it. Even the worst people on the planet could have some sort of an epiphany and become a saint if they really decided to change their way and do something about their past. Everyone deserved to be given a chance to become a saint regardless of their past, except for his brother. When Mikey was younger he didn’t completely realize the difference between him and Gerard. Probably because Gerard had tried so hard to not look like a complete and utter asshole at home. Their grandmother would have had his head if he didn’t look like a little angel. Gerard has always been her favorite, and it wasn't until very recently Mikey had even discovered that Gerard was a complete asshole when they were younger, himself. He figured something was up back in high school, when he ended up bringing Frank home with him. He just chose not to believe it.
It wasn’t like every person wanted to think of their sibling as a complete heartless asshole. Most siblings wanted to think of them as a great people. That’s what Mikey had thought about Gerard, until an old acquaintance from school ran into him at a coffee shop. That’s when Mikey’s past started to make sense.
Mikey had thought Gerard was older and wiser now. He graduated from SVA, had an intern job at comic book company, he was an adult. Mikey wanted so badly to believe his brother was a good person, and not out being a complete asshole to everyone he used to know in high school. Hopefully he’d finally grown out of this shit but from the scene happening before him at this very moment, that seemed very unlikely.
Mikey walked over to the wall and stood behind Frank for a few minutes. Watching the tear drops fall to the ground in a rhythmic manner. It broke his heart. He was so disappointed in the fact old habits were hard to break.
Finally, he did what anyone in his situation would do, he dropped down to the ground, letting his boney knees slam into the little rocks and pulled Frank into a huge comforting hug without a flinch. His arms wrapped around Frank protecting him from everything, he shook with Frank as his sobbed rippled through his frail body.
“It’s going to be alright, Frank.” his voice cooed continually, trying his hardest to comfort the boy. Slowly, Frank’s sobs turned into shutters, and finally settled on quiet sniffles. Mikey noticed the change and quietly asked him the question that was bothering him the most; “Are you going to be okay?”
Frank nodded struggling to get out of Mikey’s vice-like grip; “I’ll be okay, Mikey. I’m sorry you had to find me this way. Talk about one hell of a reunion, huh?”
“I was just thinking the same thing..what happened?” Mikey asked, letting his curiosity become outspoken.
“I just....I don’t want things to get the way they used to be.” Frank started, his voice beginning to tremor again. “I can’t go through the hell I did in High School.”
With that last sentence, Frank began to cry again. Letting his head fall against the brick wall of the building with a thud, he continued his routine of hitting it against the wall. Mikey took a deep breath, he was going to have to get to the bottom of this directly from the source.
