The Getaway Mile

Chapter 6: Bloody Pasts

I stepped inside behind the others and looked around. There was a big ceiling light hanging from the ceiling and the left wall had two old lounges pushed up against it. There was table on the right side and two people were sitting there, one eating and the other explaining details about something. Another person came in from the door at the far entrance and looked at us. "Who are they?" he asked Tumbleweed.
"New people." she replied. "Party Poison, Fun Ghoul, Jet Star and Kobra Kid." She gestured to each of us like Gerard had before, man, she had good memory.
"Doctor Exploder." the guy said. "Because I did that," he nodded at the light, "and the Scarecrow bomb was mine too."
I remembered the Scarecrow bomb, it had wiped more than half of the Scarecrow's that had been in the BL/ind headquarters at the time, and their leader. But since then he had been replaced someone so much more dangerous. Korse. He had been the one that had ordered our arrest.
"So you've met Exploder," Tumbleweed continued, "over at the table is Gasoline Cola." The girl at the table looks up and smiles slightly, she had dark eyes and black hair.
Tumbleweed walks through the door and we all follow her. We end up in a corridor lined with about six doors, three on each side. She gestures to the first door, "Mine and Cola's. And the one opposite is Exploder's. You guys can take the next two on the left side. There's a bunk in each room."
We nod, Gee and Mikey take the room next to Exploder, and Ray and I take the one next to them. At the end of the corridor is a flight of stairs that curves away to the next floor and probably the roof. I follow Ray into our room. "Bags the top bunk." he yells like a little kid. I prefer the bottom anyway. Out of the small window I could see a glow on the horizon. Somewhere beyond there is the red line that keeps us all confined in the Battery City area. It's a huge area that spreads out for miles, and the red line is the only escape, but that means scaling a ten metre high wall that ironically in not actually red, except for the few blood splatters from Killjoys that tried to escape. The wall doesn't have any guards or anything, but it's got motion sensors that will blast whatever moves, everything gets ghosted out there, nothing survives. No one knows what's on the other side, some say it could be nothing, others say it could be just like here, and some think that maybe there are more people out there, but not like BL/ind or the Scarecrows or the Killjoys, different people.
I turn around and look at Ray. "I'm gonna go help Gee with the stuff." I say and I walk out of the room. I see Gee walking in with one of the bags with the stuff from the street. "That's all I'm getting." he says to me and I nod in reply. "I'm only bringing in one, in case we need to make a quick getaway." I nodded again and walked back down the hallway. I looked at the stairs again and decided to head up there. They spiralled up and when they reached the second floor they opened out. I looked at the second floor briefly, it was too dark for me to see much so I headed up to the roof. I opened the door at the top and walked out onto the roof. It was very cold, I pulled my sleeves down over my hands. The sun was starting to peek over the horizon and it was making the desert sand glow. It was a beautiful sight, but I couldn't find it in me to smile. I was still pretty scarred from when BL/ind had taken us.
I remembered the day they had found us, we had started shooting and we thought that we had been winning because they hadn't fired back, because Korse had demanded that we be brought to him alive. Once we figured out that there was no hope, we let them take us, pretending that we had given up so that they would let their guard down. We were taken to their headquarters and shoved into a white room. They had taken us out one by one, and Korse had interrogated us. When we wouldn't reveal any information he would torture us. The screams had been horrible, and it was even worse when they became silent. But what the worst thing was, was knowing that you couldn’t do anything to help them, that you were powerless.
I remember when he was interrogating me once, and I refused to speak, so he brought in Gerard and held a ray gun to his head. Gee had told me to not say anything and that it didn't matter if he died. I sat there and said nothing for a few minutes and then made something up, my words barely coming out because of the tears that were falling down my face, and tears fell from Gee's face too and Korse laughed at our distress because he thought it was funny. I remembered the time when he had finished with Mikey and he brought him unconscious and covered in his own blood.
An idea began forming in my mind.
