The Getaway Mile
Chapter 5: On The Road Again
Gerard and I dumped our bags on the table and started to unpack the stuff we found on our second attempt at looting. We had some canned food and some more clothes. We hadn't found any medical supplies, but apparently Ray and Mikey had found theirs in a safe, the key to the safe had been on the floor in front of them. We packed the cans into the cupboard and shoved the clothes back in our bags. Mikey and Ray came down to see what we had collected. We cracked open a can of dried tomatoes, because I guess no one had wanted those, and started eating, it was worse than the baked beans, but it still wasn't the worst.
"Dr Death made contact." Ray said.
"What did he say?" I asked.
"There's a base out on the south side of Battery City. We passed it on our way here when we had to loop around."
That's why our journey took longer than it should have, because we had to loop around half of Battery City to get to this side, because it was the only place Dr Death knew about that was secure enough for us to stay here, no Scarecrow's would expect Killjoys to be this close to the city, even though it was quite far.
We started discussing it for a while and decided that we should head out when it was dark. We packed up all the stuff we had found in the houses, packed away all the food and searched the house for anything else we might need. Before we left we contacted Dr Death again and he gave us the sector number and directions.
So when the sun went down we crept into the garage, Mikey opened it up and Ray got behind the wheel. He drove out and Mikey jumped in next to me. We had no headlights, just the glow of the moon, that was occasionally obscured by clouds. We were going pretty slow at first through the neighbourhood, but once we hit the highway that looped around Battery City, joining the outskirts and leading to the highways of the desert sectors. Battery City was quite large, even though it wasn't tall, it stretched on and on, it would take a few hours for us to reach the road that would take us to the Killjoy base.
Mikey was asleep within an hour, but Gerard and I couldn't sleep. The three of us were talking about it a bit, of cause no one would know our real names, it was too dangerous and we had to be careful about everything we did, but most of all, we couldn't trust anybody at first, and what if they didn't let us in, we would have to go back. I don't think we thought this all the way through.
I began to grow even more anxious when a spot of light appeared on the horizon, how did they have light? No one outside of BL/ind had light, I mean sure, we had some crappy torches, but torches don't make that much light from this far away. I was really, really anxious. "Gee, they have light." I said leaning forwards and speaking into his ear.
"I know." he said quietly, his eyes on the spot of white that was still miles away.

We were close now. It was definitely a building and the light coming from the windows was definitely coming from ceiling lights and not torches. We parked the car around the corner from the door at the front and got out. It was a two story building, but the second floor had no light coming from any of the windows. We started towards the door and Gerard knocked, his face looked scared, for all we knew it could have been false information and it was trap, the lights didn't help with this either.
The door opened and my hand automatically went to my ray gun, ready for a fire fight. A girl stood in the doorway, she had a black cat mask on her face and she had a ray gun in her hand. "Who are you?" she asked us.
"Party Poison, Jet Star, Fun Ghoul and Kobra Kid." Gee replied while gesturing to each of us. "And you are?"
"Tumbleweed Trail." she replied. "What do you want?"
"We received word from one of our goods friends Dr Death Defying that there was a group of Killjoys staying here, we've been on our own for a while, we were staying on the outskirts of Battery City for a few days when we received word. We were wondering if you would let us stay with you." Gerard replied.
She lifted up her mask and looked at us all, "Of cause you can stay here." She said. "We get a few of you people who have no where to go, there are two others living with us at the moment." She then stepped aside and let us in.
