The Getaway Mile
Chapter 4: Birds, Blood and Glass
I woke up to movement around head and people talking. I stood up and looked around, Ray was walking downstairs and Mikey was following, Gerard was just getting up. "Morning Gee." I said. "Sorry about last night."
"S'ok." he replied and followed Mikey down the stairs. I followed and joined everyone in the kitchen. Mikey and Gerard were standing against the counter and Ray was going thought the cupboards looking for something to eat. He found two cans of baked beans that I guess no looter wanted and pulled some spoons out of a draw, he handed one to each of us and we dug in. The beans were cold, but I didn't mind, they tasted better than what BL/ind had fed us when we were hostages.
I flashed back to the awful memories, the torture, hearing the others screams, the yelling, the blood and not knowing if we were going to wake up the next day.
"Frank? Frank? Fun Ghoul? Frankie!?" The voice found its way into my thoughts and I snapped out from the memories. Ray was looking at me. "You okay?" he asked.
"Yea." I said.
"Okay," Gerard started, "We cover both sides of the street. Ray and Mikey, you guys can take this side and Frank and I will take the opposite side. Get as much food as you can and grab anything you think will be useful, and meet back here when you're done. Oh, and call out if you see anything strange or get in trouble."
We all nodded and grabbed our bags before we walked towards the door. We filed out, Gee and I walked across the road and Mikey and Ray walked next door. We started to walk down the street towards the first house, we went for the front and I turned the door handle, the hinges complained a bit, but other than a slight whine, the door swung open. I entered first, my ray gun held out in front of me, I swung it around and headed into the living room. Gee followed behind, ray gun out as we silently poked around making sure that no one was home.
It was dangerous being here, any Scarecrow could have tailed us here and were hiding out, the outskirts were mostly deserted, but there always a few stragglers.
The house was one storey and as we got deeper into the house we started to relax a bit. Until we heard a shatter to our right, I walked into the bedroom to my right, ray gun up, finger on the trigger. I swung it around as I scanned the room, I heard Gee come in behind me. I heard a noise a and turned around to see a bird flying out of the open window. I relaxed and let out my breath. I nodded at Gerard and we moved out to the kitchen where we raided the cupboards, there were some more baked beans, some tinned pineapple and canned tuna. We threw it all into the bags, trying to even it out, we nodded at each other and walked over to the next house, scaling the fence that separated the front yards. The front door to this house was locked and so was the back door, so we smashed a window and climbed in, careful not cut ourselves on the broken glass that was now lying on the floor. Of cause, me being the clumsy one, tripped and put both my hands out to break my fall getting shards of glass all through my left hand, but my right one was mostly saved due to me trying to not fall in the glass. Shit. That hurt. Blood immediately started to pour from the cuts and it stung, I tried to pull some of the glass from my hand, but pieces were embedded in my hand and had no intention of coming out any time soon.
"Shit, Frankie." Gee said when I stood up, he had come in before me, and I hadn't been watching when he had said, "Copy what I do."
"Sorry." I whispered. "I'll be fine, we can just keep going."
Gee face grew frustrated as he gestured to my hand. "That doesn't look fine, Frankie." he said, with emphasis on the fine.
"We can just head back and do it again tomorrow then." I sighed. We walked towards the front door and unlocked it, we walked back up the road and walked inside. I sat at the kitchen counter while Gerard searched for antiseptic, painkillers and gauze, which were rarities if you didn't know where to get any, and Dr Death hadn't supplied us with any. My hand stung. Blood was still coming out of all the cuts, and the ones embedded with glass hadn't faltered for a moment either. Gee came back about five minutes later with gauze and some antiseptic. "Sorry, no painkillers." He said.
"I guess all that got looted when people were looking for a way out." I replied. Gee just looked sad.
"Yea, I guess it did." He said quietly. He sat down on the stool next to me and grabbed my hand, he pulled a pair of tweezers out of the case and started to carefully pull the shards from my hand, More blood flowed when he pulled them out and I bit down on my lip without thinking and got my lip ring instead, teeth and metal, not a good combination. I bit on the other side instead and chewed on it until I could taste blood flowing through my mouth. Gee had removed most of the shards by the time Mikey and Ray walked in.
"What happened?" Mikey asked as he stood next to me, leaning against the counter and looking at my hand.
"Frankie here decided to trip while climbing through a window." Gee replied. "We're going to search the other houses tomorrow."
Ray and Mikey nodded and started to unpack the stuff that they had found. About half the stuff they had brought in was canned food, there were some medical supplies, no painkillers though, and some clothes that were fairly clean. Gerard started to spray my hand with anti-septic and then he wrapped it up in the gauze. "Thanks Gee." I said when he was done.
"No problem." he replied, "Just try not trip next time." I saw a hint of a smile on his face and I couldn't help but return it.
