The Getaway Mile

Chapter 35: The Getaway Mile

Gerard's POV
Everything was finally falling into place. Mikey's memory was starting to come back. He still wasn't all there, but he remembered me and Ray and Frank. That was all that mattered right now. And we think we had found the mile, we were driving down it right now. I was driving and Frank was in the passenger seat. He was too excited about everything to sleep, I think. He looked pretty relieved too. He did blame himself a little too much over everything that has happened and I think he's just relieved that it's all coming together. Mikey and Ray were in the back, Mikey had his head on Ray's shoulder and Ray rested his head on top of Mikey's. Neither of them could stop smiling. It made me happy to see them like that after all this time they had been apart.
"So what do we do when we get there, assuming this is the Getaway Mile." Frank asked me.
"Well assuming the red line exists." I started.
"It does exist, we've seen it." Frank said.
"Anyway, as I was saying, when we get there, we'll check it out and go from there. Assuming they still don't keep Scarecrows down there, we should be fine to wait and figure something out." I said to Frank. I looked over at him and he nodded. So the plan was set, we were finally making our escape.
***
I had stopped the car and now we were sitting a couple of hundred metres away from the red line. Which ironically was a white concrete wall. There was a sensor laser thingy to the right and it was facing towards the wall. They didn't move of course, they always just faced the wall and moved if they needed to zap something. We had been watching them for a few hours and only once it had moved slightly to zap something. Probably some poor animal that had managed to survive out here and now it was dead.
We now had an idea. We would all get in the car, I would drive. We would drive straight up to the wall, but before we got there I would stop, the laser thing would hopefully blast the wall, because it would assume that weren't stopping and as soon as it had blasted we would drive through the hole in the wall before we got zapped. We didn't know what we would find on the other side, but we hoped that it would be good. Yea, we hoped. But it was all we had right now.
I stood up. "I'm ready to go if you guys are." I said.
"I am." Frank said standing up.
"Yea us too." Ray said as he and Mikey stood up.
"Lets go then." I said and jumped in the car. The other three followed. God, this would be scary. I started the car. "Well Killjoys, in case we die, it was nice knowing you and hopefully I'll see you in the afterlife."
"You too." Frank said to me.
I looked in the rear view and saw Ray and Mikes sharing one last kiss before we drove into the unknown. I put my foot on the accelerator and kept it there as we gathered speed. We were really close to the wall now, I slammed my foot on the brakes and we all jolted forward from the force. Everything went by in a flash. The car stopped dead. The laser blasted the wall instead of us, like we expected, and before it could pick us up again and kill us, we were driving through the massive hole that it had left. Everything slowed down again as we emerged on the other side. A road stretched out in front of us, and desert surrounded us once again. We had made it through. All four of us. Alive. In one piece.
I didn't know where the hell we were, but all I could think about was that we had made it. We didn't know what would happen now or what we would find, but we were alive and we had escaped the clutches of BL/ind. We had escaped the clutches of Siren and the wall that Korse had put up. For now we were freer than we had been in a long time.
I could feel the smile spreading across my face as I looked over at Frank. He was smiling like a maniac.
"Gee we made it!" he yelled excitedly as he leaned over and hugged me.
When Frank let go of me, I turned to look at Ray and Mikey who were hugging each other tightly. They let go of each other and turned to smile at Frank and I. I smiled back before turning back around and starting to drive again. It was now that I realised I was shaking from the sudden boost adrenaline. I slowed down and decided to take it easy. It would be a shame if we died just after we had escaped.
We continued down the straight road that stretched out in front of us, the rest of the Getaway Mile.
The horizon lay out in front of us, a line in the distance, the place where the desert and the sky meet, to us, it symbolised the end of one adventure, and the start of another.

Notes

And that's the end...
So, thank you all so much for reading and commmenting and subscribing and just being the awesome people that you are, without you this story would not be what it is now and it would probably just be another unfinished and abandoned story on my computer that I never got to finish. So thank you.
Also I have a short story up that you can find here if you want to read it.
Thanks
