The Getaway Mile

Chapter 3: When the Sunlight Dies

The sun was going to be going down in a couple of hours and we still hadn't found somewhere to stay. We eventually found a place on what seemed like a deserted street, fairly far from the centre of the city, it had garage that we could lock up easily and three bedrooms, it was two story and we could get out through one of the windows on the second floor, just in case we needed to make a quick escape. It was perfect. There was a little bit of food left in the pantry, but because there was no power the fridge was out and we decided not to open it because it would smell really bad. The three bedrooms were upstairs. Ray and I would get a room each and Gee and Mikey decided to share, being brothers and all. But tonight we would sleep on the floor of the landing and we would have to have someone keeping watch. We were all tired as hell and we had spent a good 24 hours on travelling and trying to find a place to stay.
But Killjoys never stopped and the Scarecrows didn't either, so I was on the first watch, for two hours. The house and the street were eerily silent, my ray gun was in my hand and my mask was on, I paced quietly around the house, all my senses were alert and I was trying to tread as lightly as possible. I walked downstairs and the second one from the bottom creaked when I set my foot down, I flinched and listened in case someone outside had heard or in case I had woken someone up. Nothing. I let out the breath that I had been holding. "Come on, Frankie, it's just an empty house and an empty street." I muttered to myself. I poked around the living room, the stuff in the China cabinet had been smashed and there were shards on the floor, there were burn marks on the walls and floor, ray guns, and one of the armchairs was on its side. I turned away from the scene and walked back towards the kitchen, I heard a creak behind me and I spun around with my ray gun held up, finger on the trigger and just about to shoot. Gerard froze, he was on the second step from the bottom, oh right, the step. "Woah, woah, don't shot, it's just me." he said too loudly for my liking.
"Shut up!" I snapped back at him. "If anyone is out there, they'll hear you."
"Sorry." Gee said. "I didn't mean to scare you, and you're not being so quiet yourself."
"What are you doing anyway?" I whispered.
"I couldn't sleep." Gee said.
"Wow, is that all you could think of." I whispered back.
"Ok, I heard the step creak and I thought that something was happening to you."
"The street is deserted Gee."
"You don't know that, someone could have been strangling you." He retorted.
"When they can just shoot me and draw the rest of you out and kill you guys." I argued.
"It's a possibility." He muttered.
"Just go back to sleep Gerard, I'll be fine." I said.
"Okay. Night Frankie." He said.
"Night Gee." I said as he walked up the stairs, skipping the second one.
I went back to looking around the house, but my adventurous feeling had left me, Gee and I hardly ever argued, we had gotten along great since the day we had met. I could tell that he was upset with me, it would be fine in the morning. Hopefully. Maybe it was because I was tired and not thinking right or something, but I started to recall the conversation between Mikey and Gerard earlier, maybe something was up with Gee, he seemed to be arguing with everyone a lot and he didn't even really have an argument, I decided not to say anything and just let it play out, maybe he was still shaken up from Bob and the incident with the Scarecrows. I sat down on the kitchen tiles, the cold under my fingers felt comforting, and the peace of the night relaxed me, it had been a while since I had had time to just sit back, because like I said earlier, Killjoys never stopped. I heard the step creak again but this time, I didn't react, I turned to see Ray walking towards me, wow, that time had passed, it was his watch now.
"Hey Ray." I said.
"Hi Frankie."
I got up, "Night."
Yea, night." I heard him reply.
I found a place on the floor to sleep and lay down on my side, I was tired, I closed my eyes and let sleep surround me.
