The Getaway Mile

Chapter 28: Maybe It Wasn't the End...

Frank's POV
*Time Lapse*
We were now in the north-east sector. Battery City was sitting to our right. The faint light of the main city created a silhouette against the buildings of the outskirts. We didn't know what time it was, but it was early in the morning, maybe around 4am. I was sitting in the driver's seat, Gerard in shotgun, and Ray was laying across the back seat asleep. The sun would be coming up in about an hour and that was when we would start to make our way towards the city. There were many things that we hadn't thought about, but if it all went to hell at least our deaths would be quick and hopefully painless.
The sky was starting to lighten ever so slightly. Gerard looked at me.
"You want me to drive?" He asked.
"Yeah." I said and we swapped. "I'll wake up Ray." I said. I turned around in my seat and looked at Ray. "Ray." I said loudly. He squirmed slightly but didn't wake up. I reached over and grabbed his arm, he jerked awake, suddenly alert and looking around. "Woah, calm down." I said to him. He visibly relaxed, but he pulled out his ray gun and started checking it. I had already put new batteries in mine and I think I had fixed whatever the Scarecrow had done to it. Well, it worked and that was all that mattered. I pulled it out and shot it once outside the car, checking it for about tenth time in the last hour.
"If you keep doing that you're going to need new batteries." Gerard said to me.
"I'm just checking that it works." I muttered.
"Frankie, you've already done that about fifteen times. I think it works."
"It's only been about ten."
"Same difference."
"I know."
The car went silent again. I sat back and watched as the sky slowly started to lighten and soon enough a shard of light appeared on the horizon. "It's go time." I said turning to look at Gerard. He started the car and started to drive into the outskirts. We wound our way through the streets hopefully going in the right direction. The flaw in this plan was that we had left a lot up to chance. We could easily just end up lost in the outskirts, or overshoot the mile and end up in the south sector, or just get shot by Scarecrows before we even made it anywhere. Yea, a lot could go wrong.
Gerard drove on through the outskirts and the main city came into sight. I pulled out a map from my bag that we had found ages ago. I had marked out the path from the fringe of the main city to where we thought the Getaway Mile would begin.
"We're going to have to head into the city a little ways and then turn back towards the outskirts." I said to Gee as I chewed on my lip and looked at the map.
"Okay." Gee said and started to head towards the newer buildings that we could see.
"That's the right way." I said to him. We were now in the city. I think we were in a housing area for the Bats. Plain white apartment buildings rose above us, all the curtains drawn in the windows and looking too perfect, the whole street looked to perfect, there was no rubbish and no one was walking around.
When Bats were taken in by BL/ind they were hypnotised to obey all orders by BL/ind and all their quirks and differences were striped from them. They weren't really zombies, they just didn't have any personality. You were probably better off dead than living like that.
The road we were following took us further towards the centre of the city than I first thought and we drove for about another half hour before some people started populating the streets. People would talk to their neighbours and smile and walk their dogs, it all seemed perfectly normal, but it really wasn't. We got many stares, disgusted looks and worried glances from people and some people even pulled their children away or took them inside. I was surprised that no Scarecrows had been alerted and turned up.
We were driving down a street that was just like all the others and Gerard slowed down. I thought that maybe there was a patrol or something and we would need to be prepared to start shooting, so I pulled out my ray gun and put my finger on the trigger. But when I looked up I saw that it was just someone crossing the road. I looked up at Gerard for a second, because now he had stopped completely, he had gone pale white and I could see him just staring straight ahead. I looked up and I could feel my heart starting to race from the horror of what was in front me, standing in the middle of the road, with the most curious look on their face.
Mikey fucking Way.
