The Getaway Mile
Chapter 27: Like a Scene From a Movie That's meant To Be Scary Part 2
Ray's POV
Dead bodies were lying on the floor, dried blood was soaked into the carpet and the silence was deadly. I grabbed Gerard's arm and started to pull him towards the still open door. We turned and ran outside just as a car came around the corner. It sped up as we jumped in the car.
"DRIVE!" Gerard screamed as soon as I got behind the wheel. The car was speeding towards us, and we were currently facing it, I started the car and U-turned to go the other way. The car was getting closer and I had pushed the accelerator down. I heard a bang and the sound of glass shattering, when I turned around for a moment, I could see that the back window was gone. I put my foot down harder, we came to the corner and I slowed down suddenly and sped around it. I sped back up and Gerard looked behind us.
"They're slowing down, I think." He said. I could hear the panic in his voice.
Frank had woken up by now of cause and he looked behind us and ducked when he saw that the window was gone and we were being shot at. One last flash of light sped past the window and hit the tarmac in front of us. I looked around and saw that he car was now turning around and going back. I took in a breath and relaxed a bit. I was still pretty tense, and I just kept my foot down on that accelerator and concentrated on not running off the road.
"D-do you th-think that was the person wh-who k-killed all those people?" Gerard managed to stutter.
"I think so." I muttered.
"Whoa, what just happened?" Frank asked. He was sitting up now and had his elbows resting on each of the front seats.
"Well, Ray and I walked up to a house to loot some stuff and we found all these dead bodies and then we walked out of the house there was a car coming down the street and it sped up when we started to get away, and then it chased us out onto this road and was shooting at us and-"
"Yea, I know the rest Gerard, calm down." Frank said.
Gerard sat back in his seat and slid down a little bit.
"Now breathe." Frank said.
Gee took a few slow breaths and then seemed considerably relaxed.
"That's better." Frank said and relaxed back into his own seat. I stayed quiet and gripped the wheel. That had been extremely close. One of us could have easily been killed. What if we had one further into the house and gotten killed? What if Frank had been killed to? We had all been pretty close to death.
"I don't think we should stop tonight like we planned." I said. "We'll just have to keep doing shifts. I don't want to stop for the night after what just happened."
Frank and Gerard nodded in agreement and the car fell silent again. I just stared ahead and thought. Thinking can suck sometimes. My thoughts kept going back to Mikey. I would start thinking about the song I had written and the guitar chords, and then I thought of why I had written it. I would think about what we might have found if it had been any other house and any other street, and then my thoughts went to the last time I had looted a house, and Mikey and I had made out a fair few times. I felt like banging my head against a wall. I just wanted him to leave my memory for a bit, it was too painful right now. No, I didn't really want to forget him, I just missed him, and the pain of missing him was too strong for me.
"You okay?" I heard Gerard ask.
"Yea, I just…" I couldn't even finish my sentence.
"Mikey." He whispered.
"Yea." I said quietly. I felt like I was suffocating and I could feel tears start to form in my eyes. The road blurred slightly. "I think you better take over now." I said to Gerard and pulled over.
