The Getaway Mile

Chapter 26: Like a Scene From a Movie That's Meant To Be Scary Part 1

Gerard's POV
I woke up in the back seat of the car with the sun shining through the window onto my face. I blinked a few times and looked around. Frank was driving now and Ray was asleep with his head resting against the window. Frank looked in the rear view mirror at me and smiled slightly.
"Morning Gee." He said quietly as to not wake up Ray.
"Morning." I said back. I sat up and looked out the window. I could see Battery City on the horizon, we were further away than we should be, we should be pretty close.
"Holy shit Frank! What are we doing out here?" I said loudly, sort of starting to panic.
Ray moved a bit in his sleep, but luckily didn't wake.
"I think we were being followed." He replied quietly.
"By who? Scarecrows? They wouldn’t come out that far." I asked.
"No, someone else. After we found the body on the road I saw headlights, but they disappeared and then I got the feeling we were being followed." He explained.
"So what if they followed us out here?" I asked.
"I switched with Ray and then turned the headlights off and drove along this way."
"You shouldn't drive without headlights." I said to him.
"Yea, I know." He said.
"Let me drive now, you can sleep or something." I said to him.
The car stopped and Frank climbed into the back and then I climbed into the drivers seat, I put my foot on the accelerator and the car took off. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw that Frankie was already asleep. I followed the road and then turned right towards Battery City when I got to a fork in the road. I really hoped that it wasn't one that wound further into the desert. The roads out here could really get extremely complicated.
Before Battery City was Battery City it was called something else, I can't remember what, but it wasn't Battery City. When BL/ind took over the population had gotten considerably smaller due to the handful of people who had fled and the large number of people who had been killed because they had resisted. Korse had been running the city then and he had an idea to try and bring people in. Then, the wall had not been built yet and people still drove through this desert regularly to get to other places. So Korse installed a series of new roads that wound all over the place to draw people in and increase the number of residents/prisoners in Battery City. The Killjoys were the ones who had escaped the city and the clutches of BL/ind. After the population had been rebuilt, the wall was put up and since then Killjoys have been trying to escape and BL/ind has tried to kill off any of us who got close enough. The last that anyone in here had heard from the world was that one more city had been taken over by BL/ind. It was a pretty dark history, and now we were trying to escape the darker future that lay ahead.
***
Battery City lay in front of us and I could now see a thin line of black in front of us that was the road that looped around it. Ray woke up and looked out the windscreen.
"Why are we not on that road?" He mumbled, pointing at the road that we were almost on.
"Frank thought that we were being followed." I explained to him.
"Oh. Do you want me to drive?" He asked.
"Yes please." I said to him. I stopped the car and we climbed past each other. Frank was still asleep in the back, his black hair was covering his face and he had slid down onto the seat. Ray started driving and we were set back on our course to find the Getaway Mile. We drove in silence for a long time and then the road curved slightly and joined with the streets of the outskirts.
"Hey, can you go down that street?" I asked Ray, and pointed to a street a little ahead of us. He slowed down and turned down the street. "Just pull over somewhere." I said to him. He nodded and pulled over. I reached into the back and pulled my bag off of the floor and got out. "Come on, I'm gonna see if we can get any supplies." I said to Ray.
"Okay, I'll come." He said and grabbed his bag and got out too.
We left Frank in the car and walked up to the house in front of us. The front door was surprisingly unlocked and we gasped at what we saw.
