Frank's POV
We had been driving for hours now. We had been sitting in silence for however long it had been now, I had lost count somewhere after seven minutes. The only thing that happened since then was when I had decided to stick my head out the window and Gee had freaked out and nearly run off the road. I don't know why he had freaked out, but Ray had taken over since then.
"Shit!" I heard Ray yell and the car jolted to a sudden stop, I went forward from the momentum and hit my head on the back of Ray's seat. Gee pulled out his ray gun and jumped out of the car. Ray followed him and I decided that I may as well get out to and see what was going on. I pulled out the ray gun that I had stolen from the Scarecrow the other day, it felt weird in my hands, it was slightly heavier than mine and it was slightly longer too, it just felt wrong in my hands. I shook my head and got out of the car, I ran over to where the other two were standing and I felt the blood drain from my face at what I saw in front of me, Gerard had a torch out and was shining it down at was lying on the road in front of us.
A body was lying in the middle of road. It was a girl and they were definitely a Killjoy. They had a masquerade mask on like Gee's, but with a different pattern, their boots looked torn up from running and their purple jacket was open showing the black shirt they had on underneath. They didn't have any signs on them that suggested how they had died, and Gerard must have been thinking the same thing as me, because he bent down and gently rolled them over showing their back. They had a burn mark on their lower back that was undoubtedly from a ray gun.
But what were Scarecrow's doing out here? I knew that we were close to Battery City, but the Scarecrows were rarely sent beyond the main city and even when they were, they never went as far as the outskirts. But someone new was running them now, someone who might feel the need to send them out this far. Or maybe there was a killer running around, it had happened before, someone goes crazy from lack of food or water or company, and they kill everyone they can find. Either way, we had to get out of here, because she didn't look like she had lying there very long and whoever had killed her could still be around. Not to mention that we were in the desert past midnight and I was starting to hear some sort of noise in the distance and the whole thing was starting to become very unnerving.
"Ray, start the car." I said to Ray. He ran to it and I bent down and grabbed the girls feet, Gee understood what I was doing and grabbed under her arms. We hauled her to the side of the road, there wasn't much we could do and there was no point in risking our lives further for someone who was dead. Once we had put her down we ran back to the car and jumped in, as soon as we were in Ray took off, I looked behind me out the back window and I saw a set of headlights, they were a fair distance away, but it still freaked me out a bit. I turned around and Gerard looked at me.
"You alright Frank?" He asked.
I nodded, his face looked pale in the faint light from the car. He turned back around and I quickly glanced back to where the headlights were. They were gone. I must have just been seeing things. But I couldn't help the feeling that we were being followed.
