The Getaway Mile
Chapter 22: More Plans
Gerard's POV
I don't know how long the three of us sat there tossing up ideas. It should have been four. I missed Mikey. Frank's idea was to take the outside roads and make our way around Battery City, he had pulled out some maps that we had, thinking that the Getaway Mile would show up on there. Ha, no such luck, BL/ind had wiped it from the system, and any roads that went to the north-east sector turned off towards Battery City. Some might find that off-putting and think that there was something bad there that BL/ind wanted everyone to avoid, but if anything it just perked all of our interests more when we found out that it had basically been cut off. The Mile was there all right.
Now the problem was getting there. There were no roads from the south-east sector to the north-east, and you didn't just walk through the desert. Oh no. Only one Killjoy had ever returned from a trek through the desert, he had come back mauled and had died the next day. I hadn't actually seen him, but that's what the rumours were here, and most of the time they were right. I was interrupted from my thoughts as Frank spoke.
"How about we just drive through Battery City?" He said looking up at Ray and I.
I shook my head.
"No, but say we could just drive really fast through the city and say if I was in the back blasting Scarecrows that tried to stop us and…" he trailed off.
"They would take us out in seconds." I argued.
"But they wouldn't expect it."
"Oh, I think they would, they killed one of us, they're probably expecting revenge."
"If we don’t try then Mikey would have died for nothing." Frank was nearly yelling now.
"There must be some way around it." I said, back my voice raising.
"Both of you just shut the fuck up!" Ray yelled.
We were both silent, Ray rarely yelled.
"Now get over it and shut up." Ray said. We didn't say anything and Ray sighed. "Obviously Frank, your idea is too dangerous, we can't just rock up, ray guns blazing and expect to make it out alive and one piece. So I suggest that we try neither of your ideas and that we just take the road that loops around Battery City, they won't be searching for us there, because they would think that we're not hiding there, so why not hide in the last place they would expect us." Ray finished his little speech and looked back and forth between Frank and I. "Well, what do you think?" He asked.
Frank nodded but I was still in thought. "How do we find the Getaway Mile though? We can't just wander through the desert until we find it, and there is nowhere to drive."
"That's where Frank's plan comes in, when the road cuts off and heads into Battery City, we follow it into the outskirts, right to the fringe of the main city and from there we should be able to find it. I mean it's a straight road, we're not going to miss it if it stretches all the way to the horizon." Ray added to his plan.
"Or so they say." I added.
"We might have to venture into the main city, because some of the roads in the outskirts cut off and you have to go around a bunch of houses to get to the other side." Frank added to that.
"How are we going to defend ourselves if we get chased by Scarecrows?" Ray asked.
"Timer bombs." Gerard answered. "We can set them to a really short time and then throw them. How many do we have?"
"I used three to take down the headquarters." Frank said.
"Okay, that's minus three of them. How many were there last time we counted?" I asked.
"We had twelve because we had three each." Ray answered.
"That means that we only have six." I concluded.
"Six? But I only used three…" Frank trailed off.
"Mikey." I said to him.
"Oh, yea, sorry." Frank said quickly.
"So when do we leave then?" I asked, looking between Ray and Frank.
"How 'bout tomorrow?" Ray said.
Frank and I looked at each other for a second before agreeing and nodding at Ray.
"Sounds good." I said.
