The Getaway Mile
Chapter 12: You Better Run For Your Fucking Life
I was up and running. I heard the first beep and then the second, I ran harder. I reached the stairs without any trouble. 20 seconds left. I was on the ground floor now, I had to be far away from here when that thing detonated. I saw a flash of light whizz past my head before it exploded into a wall. Korse. I started to zigzag a bit and made it to the door in one piece. I pushed it open and ran out onto the street. I turned and looked at the door. I could no longer hear the beeping, but Korse was approaching fast. I hit a button next to the door that said 'security lock' above it. Korse tried to open the door and he looked panicked for a second. I smiled and ran off again. I had only made it about 100 metres from the building when I head the first explosion, I didn't dare turn and watch, I was already in a dangerous position. I heard the next two explosions and I could feel the gust of wind behind me. It pushed me a bit and I stumbled as I tried to get further away.
I kept running through the city, trying to find the outskirts so that I could find the car. I knew that I was running in from the way I had come, so I was going in the right direction.
I don't know how long I had been running for, but I eventually found myself on a familiar street, empty and deserted. I ran down to the house that we had stayed in for those couple of nights. I opened the door and stumbled inside. My legs gave out from underneath me and I fell to the floor. Panting from the run and tired from the last few hours. I knew that I would have to keep going, I couldn't stay here, they would be searching everywhere for me. I knew that I had been spotted. This could get tricky. At least I had made it out alive, and taken down Korse, there was no way he could have made it out alive, or was there? No, I couldn't think about that, I had to concentrate on finding the car and getting out of here. But I needed to rest first.
And then I realised where I was. When we went to find the base we had had to loop around, I had come straight from the base to Battery City. I was on the opposite side of the city. A few miles away from the car. Shit. I would have to walk there tomorrow, and by then the streets would be crawling with Scarecrows. Maybe I wouldn't be so lucky as to make it out alive.
I pulled myself up off the floor and carefully opened the door. Luckily I knew where I was in relation to the city boundary, so I should be okay if I just followed that. I started to walk down the street, I was tired and couldn't really walk straight. I wound my way through the streets towards the boundary, I could see it now, where the outskirts thinned out and the desert opened up. Once I was pretty close, I turned and started to follow it, I decided it would be better to keep to the shadows, the sun was starting come up and I didn't want to be easy to spot.
I sat under a bushand opened my bag to have a look at the food that I had brought. I had an energy bar, some rice and a tin of canned tomato. I pulled out the energy bar and ripped open the packet. I ate it fairly quickly, not even bothering to chew it properly. Isaved the rice and the tomato for later. Feeling a bit better now that I had food in me, I got up and started walking again.
The sun slowly made it's way across the sky while I was walking. I kept my eye on it, I had learnt to tell the time by sun. It was about 9:00 and the heat was starting to set in. I stopped again, I sat in a thick patch of trees, it wouldn't hide me very well from Scarecrows, but I should be okay, I hadn't run into any, or seen any all day. I lay down on the dying grass and stared up at the sky, a few clouds were slowly drifting across it.I closed my eyes for a second and just lay there. When I opened them again, there was a patrol of Scarecrows standing over me with their ray guns pointed at me.
Shit.
