The Getaway Mile
Chapter 11: Goodbye
Frank's POV
I was sitting on the roof again. It was sunset, this could be my last sunset. I had made up my mind. I would leave tonight. I had enough explosives and I had sorted out my plan. I would make my way to Battery City after everyone was in their rooms, I would drive most of the way there, to between the outskirts and the main city. From there I would make my way through the city towards BL/ind headquarters. I would wait until the place had cleared out for the night and then try and find a way in. I would place the first bomb somewhere on the first floor, which should be deserted at that time, then the second floor would have the last two, one in the middle of the floor and one for Korse's office. Once they had exploded the whole building should cave in on itself. I would need to be out of there within 30 seconds. I wasn't going to worry about finding Korse, just taking down the building.
And I might die in the process.
I sat out there until the sun had completely disappeared, then I made my way downstairs to have dinner. I wasn't even aware of what I was putting in my mouth, just trying concentrate on looking normal, so that no one would suspect anything. I left and sat in mine and Gerard's room. I pulled apart my ray gun and then put it back together, I had a spare one in my bag, but I would be relying on this one a lot. Especially if I got in a fire fight. Gee came in and looked at me before climbing onto his bunk.
"Night Frankie." he said quietly.
I got up and turned off the light so that I could "sleep" too. "Night Gee." I said. After a few minutes I started to hear his light breathing. Good. He was asleep. I lay there and waited until the whole place was completely silent. I quietly got up and looked at Gerard. "Bye Gee." I whispered, my voice cracking. "If I don't come back, stay strong for me." I looked at him for a few seconds and then turned away, creeping quietly out of the room. I listened outside Mikey and Ray's door for a few seconds before I opened it. They were lying there, wrapped up in each others arms. I smiled to myself, at least they were happy. "Bye Ray, take good care of Mikey, he needs you. Bye Mikey, take good care of Ray, you guys need each other." I looked at them one last time before I turned and walked out of the room. I found some paper and a pen and left them note. "Sorry. Don't come after me. F" I started up the car when the first tears fell down my face. But I had to be strong, I wanted my friends to be safe.
It took a few hours to get the outskirts of Battery City, but when I got there I slowed down and wound my way through the deserted streets until I could see the newer, habited buildings. I parked the car in a patch of bush and quietly got out. I kept to the shadows, my ray gun in my hand in case I ran into trouble, my bag was on my back and it seemed get heavier and heavier the closer I got to the heart of the city.
Then there it was. BL/ind headquarters. I could feel my heart racing in my chest, I felt sweaty and was extremely nervous. I scanned the area for cameras, didn't look like it. It looked pretty deserted, except for the glow of a light on the second flow. Bingo. I crept around the perimeter, the ground floor was definitely deserted. I found a window a peered in, a bathroom, but it was empty. I pulled my bag off my back and took out a small towel and a hammer. I folded the towel over and held it up to the window, I hit in 3 places and heard the light tinkling of glass as it hit the floor on the other side. I waited to see if any alarms would go off, again, nothing. I started to very carefully climb through the window, it was fairly big, I would have to come out this way too. When I was on the other side unharmed, except for a few scratches, I pushed out any leftover glass and continued on.
Like I predicted the first floor was completely deserted. I walked over the front door and pushed on it, unlocked, good. I went over to the centre of the room and placed the first bomb, it would blow up when the others went off. I made my way up the stairs, I decided to place the second bomb on the stairs, so that if Korse somehow got out of his office, he wouldn't have any stairs.
I was on the second floor now. I slowly and quietly made my way through the hallways, hoping that I would find a way out quickly. I found the door I was looking for, it had light coming out from underneath it. I placed the bomb to the side and looked at it. It was set to 30 seconds, and the good thing about this little one, it couldn't be disarmed. I crouched there for a moment longer before hitting the button.
