The Getaway Mile
Chapter 10: Restless
Gerard's POV
I walked into mine and Frank's room and climbed up to the top bunk. I could hear him moving around. Must be having a bad dream. I got under the covers and lay my head on the pillow. I just lay there for a while, I didn't really feel tired. I heard Frank move around below me and the mattress creaked as he got up. Where was he going? Probably just up to the roof, he would be okay. I wondered if I should go up and ask him what was wrong or comfort him or something. My mind began to grow heavy with sleep, my eyes closed and I was out in seconds.
Frank's POV
I got up out of bed and walked up the roof. I sat down near the edge and looked out to the horizon, it was too dark for me to see it, but I knew that it was there and that was comfort enough. I lay back and stared up at the stars. There was no moon tonight, so the stars where the only lights. I looked at them. World's that felt so close, but were so faraway, world's that weren't like ours. I thought a while about what these worlds would be like. What they would look like, and smell like, and what kind of people lived there. Then I thought of our messed up world. There must be something beyond the red line.
I started to think of one of the rumours that Dr Death had told us, it said that there was a road that spread from the centre of Battery City and all the way to the red line. The wall had been built over the road, and the rumour also said that on the other side the road continued. No one knew where it continued to, but most likely another city. It was called the Getaway Mile. The name was sort of stupid, I mean, it was far longer than a mile, but I guess it sounds better than Getaway Miles. But the biggest part of the rumour was that part of wall going over the road was completely unprotected, no motion sensors, or Scarecrows, nothing. But nobody had ever been game enough to try.
My plans started to grow in my head. If I could somehow destroy BL/ind and Korse, and get everyone else to the Getaway Mile, we could get out of here. It would be extremely reckless and dangerous and probably suicidal. But if I was to die, I was going to make sure that I took BL/ind down with me. I got up and walked back towards the stairs, carefully making my way down in the dark. I quietly crept back into mine and Gee's room, I lay down on the bottom bunk, the room was silent except for Gerard's light breathing.
Gerard's POV
I was standing out the front of Killjoy base. The car was gone. In my hand I held a note from Frank. It was screwed up in my fist and I was searching the horizon for any sign of him. He had told us that he was leaving and that he wouldn't be coming back and that he might not survive what he was about to do. He didn't say where he was going or why he was gone. He just left. I kicked a stone.
My eyes slowly opened and I was staring at the ceiling. Oh, it had been a dream. I leaned over the railing to look into Frank's bed. He was gone! Where was he? Was he okay? Why was he gone? I ran out. "Ghoul!" I yelled. "Ghoul." I was just about to yell out Frankie, when he appeared in front of me. "Hey, its ok, I'm here." he said to me, both his hands on my shoulders. "Calm down, Poison, its okay."
"I had a dream." I choked out.
"Its okay, I'm okay, I'm standing in front of you, I haven't been dusted yet." he said calmly.
I flinched when he said "yet".
"Come get something to eat." he said to me, and I followed him out into the front room where Tumbleweed had started to make breakfast.
"What's that?" I asked, looking at what she was making.
"Similar to cornflakes." Tumbleweed replied. "But really bland, they don't really taste like anything, and you have to cook them." She put some in a bowl and handed it me, I handed it over to Frank, who went to sit down. She handed me another bowl and filled up five more. "Give these to your friends, they can eat in their room if they want."
I took two of them and knocked on Mikey and Ray's door. I opened it without a reply, they were sitting on the top bunk and talking. "Breakfast." I said as I handed them the bowls.
"Thanks." Mikey said.
"Yea, thanks, Poison." Ray said.
"That’s okay." I said before walking out.
