Us vs. Them

See You Where The Moon Kissed The Sun

Chaos and I walked into the house side by side, talking among ourselves. She looked over her shoulder at Ray, still wary. She looked back to me, carrying on her sentence.

"You know I gotta get heading back there soon, kid.." she whispered to me once we were in the kitchen.
I looked in her eyes, hers searching mine for any response. I just nodded and weakly smiled. "Yeah..."
"It'll be fine, babe. You have your brother again. Remember?" She wrapped an arm around my shoulders. I just nodded.

We all sat in the living room, eating a meal of oatmeal and cactus fruit. The boys obviously hadn't seen actual food in a while because they almost cried when Chaos pulled it out of one of the bags in the trunk.

"Jesus Christ, this is so goooooood," Frank moaned, literally licking the bowl.
"Slow down, big boy. You're gonna make yourself sick," Gerard laughed.
"Nahh, I could go for hours." He looked over at me, winking. Ray hit him over the head with his book he was reading. "Ow!" He rubbed his head.
"Still my little sister," he said nonchalantly.
"Still hurt," he rubbed his head some more.
"Still my little sister.."

Chaos took bowls and put them in the sink, which was piled with more dishes. Jesus, these guys never clean a fucking thing, do they? She beckoned for me to join her outside.

"Now?" I asked.
"It's now or never, babe. I was expected back days ago." She kicked the toe of her boot in the dust.
"What are you gonna tell them?" I looked over at her nervously. In the 3 years I've known her, I still don't fully trust her.
"Well," she started. "Car troubles, for starters." She coughed. "Maybe some sob story on how I ran into a mean gang of Killjoys and I was unarmed. I dunno."
"Will they but that, though?" I looked back at my shoes. "I mean, you're this so-called skilled professional, right? At least that's what you told me."
"Even the best of the best have their off days, babe," she added quietly.

I looked over at the sunset against the mountains. I bit my lip nervously and laughed to myself.

"What's so funny?" she asked me.
"Nothing.. Just remembering the day we met."
"You were the most pathetic looking thing I'd ever seen." she laughed.
"I was 14! Gimme a break."
"True.. True.."

She slung her back over her shoulder and sighed.

"Well.. This is goodbye, kid."
"You'll be back," I reminded her. "Right?" I asked, just for good measure.
"Always.." She reached over and gave me a quick hug.

I interlocked my fingers in her hood, inhaling her scent: leather and Ramen noodles. We may not trust each other with our lives yet, but we're still friends. Best friends. I just pray to the neon angels that she won't betray me.

"See you where the moon kissed the sun," she whispered our code for our meeting place.
"I'll be the rays on the horizon."

I watched as she took one of the bikes that she had gone out and jacked a few nights ago. She kicked it to life and it roared down the dirt road, not even bothering to take a second glance back.

Notes

Yeah, I'm not so sure on this chapter. Something had to happen, you know?
