Us vs. Them
Heat of the Night
I was woken up by Chaos shaking my arm. I wiped my cheek with the back of my hand and sighed.
"How about a hot meal?" she smiled.
"Sounds like a plan."
We pulled up to a rinky-dink diner with a few cars parked outside. I put a new range in my gun and stuck it in my holster, pulling my hair back in my face. Sighing, I opened my door and stepped out. Chaos draped her arm over my shoulders and escorted me through the front doors.
"Hi! Welcome to Rinky Randy's, booth or table?" a cheery voice greeted us.
"Uhh..." Chaos looked at me.
"Booth is fine." I answered for her.
"Right this way," the waitress escorted us to our booth by the doors. "Any drinks?"
"Coffee," Chaos and I both answered. "Just coffee."
"Be right with you gals." And she took off to the kitchen.
"Sleep good?" Chaos asked, pouring creamer into her mug.
"Oh.." I sighed. "Yeah, I guess."
"Dreams again?"
I looked up at her from my menu.
"Taylor.." she whispered, just low enough for me to hear her, putting her hand on mine.
"It's nothing.. They're fine." I retreated my hand back to my lap.
We ate our late night breakfasts: French toast, cheeseburgers, and ice cream. After we paid, we lounged around outside, talking about how far we'd go for one another, how much our lives had changed, what we'd change if we could.
"DRACS!" someone yelled.
Everyone, inside and out, took out their weapons of choice. I ran to the car, threw open the trunk, and grabbed the nearest shotgun. Hey. My name isn't Shotgun Spirit for the Hell of it.
"Hey, babe?" Chaos hollered over the commotion. "Kinda need ya here."
"Coming!" I yelled back, hopping over the hood over to her. "Cover me, yeah?"
"Always!"
I ran out from the side, unleashing my fury. The beams from RayGuns made the night look like a laser show. Hauntingly beautiful. The thing about Killjoys? We're a family. We may not know each and every one of us, but we struggle the same. We fight for each other. We die for each other.
I loaded a round into a Drac, turning to face another. Some people started cheering loudly when a TransAm pulled up, blaring "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne.
"Great! We outnumber them!" Chaos yelled behind me. I turned to run for her embrace but was held up when a Drac wrapped his arms around my waist and neck. He wriggled my shotgun out of my hands, snapping my left wrist in the process. As I screamed out in pain, a beam of red light hit him just behind his ear, knocking him down. 2 more, for safe measure I'm sure, and a 3rd that jutted right past my upped thigh, hitting a Drac that was apparently gnawing at my ankle.
"Fuck!" I heard someone yell, just as I hit the ground, blacking out.
"Baby?" Chaos yelled from far away, or so it seemed. She caressed my cheeks, honing in and out of focus.
"C-Chaos.." I murmured, grasping her gloved hands. "It hurts!.."
"I know, honey. I know.." She looked around, probably for help. I heard the vans take off, probably in defeat.
"Come with us, you'll both be safe," a voice commanded.
I barely heard Chaos's objections before I felt a pair of arms wrap around me. I looked up to see a man with bright red hair and a yellow mask and beautiful, hazel orbs looking down at me, screaming that I would be alright, carrying me to their vehicle.
"Ger..Gerard?"
He must have been just as shocked as I was because he almost dropped me.
"Jesus! I'll take her," another man said. I felt a new pair of arms collapse over me, stronger than the last ones. "Go around and follow us back, alright?" he instructed, I'm assuming to Chaos.
"Will she be okay?" she asked.
"Of course, now do what we asked you to." Gerard told her.
"I'm all she has, don't let her go down when I'm not here." Chaos must have pinned him against their car because I heard a faint thud.
"Cori.. She's fine."
How did he know her name? I barely know her name.
I was transferred to the back seat and felt someone tie off my thigh. I struggled a bit but someone held my arms above my head and someone else pulled my mask off.
"No.." I whispered, partially from exhaustion, partially from fear. "I need it.."
"Shhh.." a man with long black hair stroked my hair back. "You're safe now."
The car roared to life and we took off.
"Yo, Kid." Gerard piped up, probably driving.
"Yeah?" the man with the blonde hair asked.
"...she knows who we are..."
"Wait.. What?" the third man asked.
"Radio Jet."
"Why?" Kid asked, pulling out his walkie.
"Tell him we found his sister."
