Not So Bulletproof Hearts
Tea, coffee and texting
(Kat's POV)
I couldn’t focus in any of my classes. All I could think about was Frank and what nearly happened between us. I had no idea who this boy was… but something about him was drawing me in so quickly. I just need to get to know him. I tried my luck and looked across the classroom to him; he was sat with a tall, skinny boy in white framed glasses. Frank instantly caught my gaze and winked at me. Oh my god. I was melting. He’s so hot. I just need to manage to talk to him without stuttering or shaking.
Lunch came around sooner than expected. I flung my bag over my shoulder and glanced towards the door. Brie was there, waiting for me with a tall, long haired boy. I gathered my books from the desk and chased a pen with my hand before it rolled onto the floor. But someone else picked it up. I stood upright to be met by Frank’s enticing gaze. “hey. umm. Sorry about earlier, I don’t know what came over me, you’re just so… so…” he giggled and ran his hand through his hair. “I guess what I’m trying to say is, do you want to hang out after school?” A smile crept upon his face as he handed back my pen. This was my chance; I can get close to him. It’s a little soon but I can’t resist. “I would love to, where shall I meet you?” After a moment or so of thinking Frank offered to drive me to the local coffee house for a drink and I agreed to meet him at the school gates.
I turned to walk out the door to Brie and the tall boy, but then an idea popped into my head. I took once last glance at Frank and winked at him, he smirked at me. His signature smirk, so sexy. I was giggling to myself as met Brie. “Did Frank Iero just ask you out, Kat?!” I smiled down at my feet, slightly embarrassed by what I’d just done. “Yes. He did.” That’s when I got a better look at the boy Brie was standing with. He had icy blue eyes and long black hair over hanging his face. “Speaking of being asked out, this is my boyfriend, Andy, we’ve been together for almost a year now!” Andy smiled and shook my hand. “Nice to meet you, Kat. I hear you’re a new one of Brie’s friends.” We walked to lunch and spent our time discussing music, our studies and how I was settling into my new environment within the school.
Finally the bell sounded for the end of the day after two more lessons of which I wasn’t really paying much attention to, I took my phone out of my bag and sent my mom a text. *Don’t pick me up from school. I’m heading out for coffee. Home later. * I walked out to the gates with Brie and Andy, Brie gave me her number in case anything went wrong and Andy offered to give me a lift if I needed it. “I know this is only your first day, and I hardly know you but I think we’re going to be great friends.” Brie unexpectedly wrapped her arms around me and embraced me in a friendly, yet slightly uncomfortable hug. I grunted quietly and she loosened her grip enabling me to breathe again. I glanced over her shoulder to see Frank strolling across the courtyard swinging his car keys on his index finger and smiling confidently. Pulling away from Brie, I said my goodbyes to her and Andy. They walked off to the car park holding hands. How sweet, Brie is so lucky, Andy has the looks and personality. I wonder what Frank is like.
“Hey, I’m glad you turned up. I was looking forward to getting to know you.” Frank pulled on his lip ring as he gazed into my eyes. Oh my gosh he’s doing it again. Total lady killer. Right Kat! Keep your cool, my confidence instructed me from a far corner of my mind. “Yeah. Same here…” I smiled awkwardly as I felt my cheeks begin to turn red. The keeping my cool thing was not going to plan. “So, to the coffee house right? Follow me, my car is over here.” He pointed to a black sports car at the end of the car park. We strolled over to it in silence. I didn’t know what to say, I was so nervous around him. He opened the passenger door and beckoned me to take a seat with a swift flick of his hand. I giggled as I sat down, watching him take off his tie and his blazer, throwing them on the back seat. His car was pretty clean, all that seemed to be there was a guitar in a case now under his blazer and a packet of cigarettes on the dashboard.
Frank sat down in the driver’s seat and undid the top button on his shirt, revealing a scorpion tattoo on his neck. He turned to me and smiled, I had to turn away before he saw me turning pink again. “So, who are your friends?” Guessing Frank was referring to Brie and Andy I began to tell him about how the head sister put her in charge of making sure my first day went well. Frank put the key in and the car roared to life, I could tell he hadn’t been driving long but I felt safe in his company. Soon we pulled up to the coffee house. “You can leave your bag in here if you want, I’ll pay for your drink.” What a sweet gesture I thought, placing my bag in the foot well as I got out of his car. We headed inside and Frank told me to go find a seat. As a turned away he grabbed my shoulder. “oh wait, I forgot to ask you what you wanted.” Another shot of electricity ran through me as his touch met me. “umm. I’ll have an herbal tea please.” Smiling sheepishly I went and sat down on a table near the window overlooking a small field where a horse was grazing under the summer sun.
Frank soon returned with our drinks, setting them down on the table in front of us. He didn’t take his eyes off me the whole time. I took a sip of my tea. Yum, peaches and strawberry. My favourite, but how did he know? Must have been a lucky guess. He took a drink of his coffee and cleared his throat. “Tell me about yourself, Kat.” Setting my cup down on the table I thought for a moment. “Well, I’m from Belleville, New Jersey. As you’ve probably noticed I’m rather quiet, I keep myself to myself usually. I really like punk rock and Misfits are my favourite band.” That’s pretty much all there is to me, I’m quite a boring person really. “No Way, I love Misfits too. I have far too many of their band tee shirts.”
The conversation continued and we both became deeply engrossed in what we were saying. I learned that the boy in glasses I saw him with earlier was called Mikey way and that Frank, Mikey, Mikey’s elder brother Gerard and a guy called Ray where all in a band together. That explained his guitar. He told me how his parents divorced when he was young and he grew up with his farther. I finished my last sip of tea and looked at the time on my phone. 5pm, my parents will be expecting me. I must have had a panicked look on my face because Frank laughed and said “Don’t worry, I’ll drive you home now if you want.” I agreed and we left the coffee shop, still discussing how his band had formed.
I directed Frank back to my house, it felt like such a long journey but such a short one now. I didn’t want to leave his company but my mom wouldn’t approve of me bringing home a boy I just met. “We’re here.” I pointed to a cream farm building set back from the road. It had a vine of roses up on side and a red front door. “It’s been really nice talking to you, Kat. We’ll have to do it again sometime, okay? Why don’t you take my phone number, text me.” Pulling a crumpled piece of paper and a pen from his pocket he wrote down his number and passed it to me smiling hopefully. I stood by the road clutching the paper he gave me and watched his car speed off down the road. A wave of excitement came over me. He gave me his number! How would I pick up the nerve to talk to him though…?
