Not So Bulletproof Hearts
The world is ugly.
Kats POV
“Hey there’s Andy!” Brie grabbed my wrist and we ran towards a stage at the far corner of the field. I almost didn’t recognise him at first as he jumped off the stage and approached us. Andy was wearing white skinny jeans and a top to match. Black war paint covered his eye lids making his eyes look a piercing blue. A black line stretched out from the side of his mouth posing as a scar. He looked amazing!
“Enjoying the festival, Kat?” Andy’s voice boomed out of his skinny body as he hooked his arm around Brie. “Yes, I am thanks.” I smiled at Andy and Brie before averting my eyes to the stage. There were four other men setting up instruments and testing microphones. They were all dressed pretty similar to Andy but it was clear that he was the lead in the band. “Brie, baby. We’re on now for our last song. Are you both staying to watch?” Brie nodded, smiling excitedly.
Andy walked back over to the stage and pulled himself up as the crowd began to chant. Brie and I ran to the front before the crowd pushed us back. “This is the last one guys! You’ve been a great audience! WE LOVE YOU!” the crowd went wild. I had no idea ‘Black Veil Brides’ were so popular. The music began and Andy burst into song. “In the end! As we fade into the night!” the crowd chanted along “OOH WOAH OH OH!” I tried my best to join in but I didn’t know the song. There was so much love and electricity in the air as Andy hit the notes perfectly. “who will tell the story of your life?”…
After the song was over I wiped the bead of sweat from my forehead and turned to Brie. “That was amazing!” I said, almost jumping off the ground. “Let’s go see what other bands are playing; I’ll catch up with Andy later.” We pushed our way back through the crowd and began walking down the center of the field. Stages and stalls selling band merchandise were neatly lined up all around us, there were so many people. They can’t have all been from the village. There’s only about 200 people living here, if that. They must have come from miles around to join in the festivities. I don’t blame them, this was amazing. It was almost as awesome as the warped tour, but not quite.
I was standing at a stall looking at all the produce when an announcement was made over some nearby speakers. “MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE ARE PERFORMING AT THE EAST STAGE IN 2 MINUTES.” My chemical romance? That’s Frank’s band! “I didn’t know Frank was playing here.” Brie tilted her head as she spoke. “Neither did I, Brie.” I breathed out as small laugh and a moment of realization came over me. “Brie! I’ve never seen the guys perform before, shall we head over there now?” She smiled at me hopefully but then glanced over all the stages reluctantly. “It’s a long shot Kat, the west stage is right over that the other side, it’s gonna take us at least 10 minutes to walk over there.”
I scanned the festival grounds, it was bigger than I realised. Temporary signs were places all over, point in directions of the different stages. She was right, with the amount of people here it’s gonna take us a while to get there. “Uhh… what if we run?” Brie gazed back at me with a look of disbelief. “Really? In this field? In these shoes? That far?” She crossed her arms and refused to move. “Kat, I’m sorry but I’m not running that far.” I sighed deeply and looked down at my feet on the dry dead grass.
“Run where?” Andy said from somewhere behind me making me jump slightly. I turned around to face him just as Brie jumped into his arms for a hug. “Kat wants us to run all the way to the east stage to watch My Chemical Romance perform. I’m not running that far in these shoes.” She pouted at Andy before nuzzling her nose into his shoulder. Andy stood and thought for a moment, completely ignoring Brie’s actions. “well.” He began. “I’d like to see the guys perform, apparently they’re pretty good.” Laughing to himself, Andy picked Brie up and threw her over his shoulder.
“AAH! What are you doing!?” Brie screamed out in shock. “You said you didn’t wanna run, so I’ll carry you.” I sniggered at Andy’s quick thinking and set my eyes on the stage at the opposite side of the filed. “Are you ready, Kat?” Andy said, looking down at me expectedly. “You know it.” I replied as I set off running between the stalls and stages with Andy carrying a screaming Brie close behind me.
Franks POV
I sat nervously at the back of the stage, tuning my guitar. I plucked the first few notes but dropped my plectrum. “Shit!” I thumped my fist on my leg in anger. “whoa, calm down, man.” Gerard rubbed his hand on my back for comfort. “As usual, you’re gonna nail it out there. The intro was amazing, best I’ve seen you play.” He sat down on a speaker opposite me and smiled hopefully. “Don’t sweat it, Frank.”
We sat in silence for a few moments before I leaned over to retrieve my plectrum from next to Gerard’s foot. My hand met the plectrum and I felt his warm breath over my neck, unexpectedly he kissed my cheek and hung his head next to mine. “Treat her right, Frank. Whatever happens though, I’ll be your fall-back. You’re my best friend and I fucking love you, Frank.”
“Hey, homos. We’re on!” Mikey peered from around the stage with his bass and laughed at us. Gee smiled and beckoned me to follow him to the stage. Here goes. I swallowed my pride and headed out, two songs down and two more to go. Let’s do this shit!
“The future is bulletproof! The aftermath is secondary! It’s time to do it now and do it loud! KILLJOYS! MAKE SOME NOISE!” My fingers were speeding over the frets, my plectrum hitting each string at the precise moment it needed to. I hit every note exactly, throwing my head back in the adrenaline rush that was coming over me. We hit the chorus and I was still on fire, diving around the stage letting my energy burst out of me like a firework. Finally! A guitar solo, its mine and Ray’s time to show these guys what we can really do.
I threw myself down on my knees, center stage, in front of Gerard. Throwing my head back to the sky I hit every note with all the passion in my body. Heart was pounding the sweat was dripping down my face. Gerard stood over me and began singing the final verse. It was perfect, the best version of NaNaNa we had ever played. Together we hit the last notes perfectly and ended the song. Gee pulled me up and winked at me. He breathed heavily down the microphone for a few seconds before shouting “YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING AWESOME!” the crowd went wild, cheering and screaming.
We headed backstage to swap instruments for a more down beat song, I was beginning to get worried. Through all the sweat and the passion on stage I couldn’t see Kat in the audience. I hope she’s around. “Frank, were straight back on.” I picked up my ‘Pansy’ guitar and looked over my shoulder to Gerard. “Yeah, I’m coming.” Running back to on the stage I scanned the audience for Kat. Just as I was about to give up hope I saw her running frantically across the field, arriving at the back of the crowd with Andy who was carrying Brianna over his shoulder.
I smiled and turned to Gerard who beckoned me over to the microphone. I nervously walked over and cleared my throat. “Umm, thanks for being here tonight guys, I’d like to dedicate this next and final song ‘The World Is Ugly’ to my girlfriend, Kat. She… she means so much to me.” I raised my head and looked through the audience to her. The crowd parted and made a path leading down to Kat. “I love you, angel.”
I stepped back from the mic to make room for Gerard. I took one last look at Kat before starting to play. My hands were shaky but the moment Gerard started singing my confidence grew. “These are the eyes and the lies of the taken.” Again the adrenaline was rising inside me, I swung my head forth and back as Gerard started on the chorus.
“That the world is ugly
But you’re beautiful to me
Are you thinking of me
Like I’m thinking of you.”
I threw my head back and strummed my guitar will all my passion but into my performance. I dived around the stage hitting all the notes as I went, the song was soon over. I pushed my hair back off my sweaty forehead and looked into the audience to find Jade. There she was standing with her hands over her mouth in shock and tears running from here eyes in the center of the audience as the crowd began to depart. The feeling of accomplishment was overpowering me, I stood smiling at her from the stage, my heart pounding out of my chest.
