Not So Bulletproof Hearts
From coffee to concerts
Frank’s POV
I parked up outside the coffee house and paused for a moment. Kat was upset because of me, I could feel it. Walking around the corner to the front door I caught sight of Gerard, it was the first time I’d seen him since the party. My knees went weak. Why was I so nervous? I mean, we talked about it. It’s over, I’m with Kat. No matter how hard I tried to convince myself I still wasn’t comfortable with the idea of being at the coffee house with Gerard.
“Hey…” Gerard said awkwardly as I sat down on the chair opposite him. I smiled crookedly in response. “I thought you would already have gotten a drink, Gee.” He rose up from the chair and smirked. “I did, but I finished my coffee before you arrived. I’m going to get another cup of coffee… or a pot. What do you want? I’ll pay.” I should have guessed that Gee had already finished his drink, I swear he needs to go to coffee rehab. “umm.” I thought for a moment before responding to his question. “I’ll just have an espresso, thanks.”
Gee walked off towards the counter, swinging his hips as he did so. I groaned and rolled my eyes at his actions. Folding my arms on the table, I racked my brain for solutions to the current problems I was facing. I rubbed my index fingers on either of my temples and stared into space. A while after Gee approached the table with my espresso in one hand, another mug hooked around his pinkie and a large pot of coffee in his other hand.
He sat down silently and slid my cup across the table. Chewing on his lip as he poured the coffee I cleared my throat. “So, you had an idea to help me cheer up Kat?” Gee furrowed his eyebrows at me and took a sip of his coffee. “Oh yeah.” He replied with an enlightened look on his face. “I don’t actually have an idea. I thought I was just going to help.” I screwed my nose up at him and blew the steam rising from my espresso.
We sat in silence, Gee, looking quite sorry for himself and me frowning across the table at him. Suddenly an unknown voice came from over me “Are you seriously going to drink all that coffee yourself?” I turned my head to see a waiter carrying a large tray of empty cups and mugs. Gerard laughed and smirked at the young man standing before us. “Yes, yes I am.” He sniggered. The man laughed and averted his eyes to me.
“You must be Frank? The guitarist right?” he said excitedly. I leaned back in fear that he might drop one of the mugs on me by accident. “Umm… yeah, how did you-“ He quickly interrupted. “Gerard’s told me so much about you, the guys, the band! You’re all so amazing.” I turned to Gee and raised an eyebrow at him. “Uhh, this is James, we kind of became friends when I started coming here and drinking coffee on my own for hours. He’s quite a big fan of us.”
James stood, smiling at us eagerly.
“A-are you playing at the Fall rock festival next week?” he stuttered in excitement as he spoke. Fall rock festival? I’d completely forgotten that was coming up. Gerard thought for a moment, tapping the side of his mug and then a look of realization spread across his face. “That’s it Frank!” I tilted my head, confused. “what do you mean, Gee?” he pulled out of his phone and dialled a number, putting the phone up to his ear, he smiled excitedly at me. What was going on…?
“Mikey! Get Ray now and meet me at the coffee house as soon as possible! Gotta go, man!”
Gerard hung up and ordered James to go fetch him another pot of coffee. “It’s genius, Frank!” by now I was more confused than ever. “What is!?” he pushed his mug to one side of the table put his hands together. “We play at the Fall Rock Festival for Kat, we can dedicate a song to her, plus have you heard how many bands get signed at those things!? This is our shot! You can finish picking up the pieces with Kat and our band gets its first big break!” I smiled and nodded my head in agreement, he was right, it was genius. That would be perfect, Kat’s never heard us perform before so that will make it even more special.
Kats POV
I was wrapped up in my duvet for most of the day, flicking through television channels not to find anything worth watching. I hit the off button on my remote and drove my head into a pillow. Where was Frank? Why hadn’t he called me? Questions were flying around my head like small insects, pestering me more and more as the minutes ticked by. I pulled my phone from my pocket, no messages. My heart sunk. C’mon Frank, where are you?
At that moment my phone buzzed in my pocket. In a fit of excitement I pulled it out again. ‘1 new message – Brie.” By now I was overwhelmed with disappointment. I tapped the message and opened it.
**Hey, Kat. Frank came to look for you last night, I hope you found each other okay. the Fall rock festival is next week and I was wondering if you wanted to go with me. Andy is in a band that’s performing there and I thought you’d enjoy watching him sing. Xoxo**
I smiled at her message. Fall rock festival? Sounds perfect for me!
**That sounds great, Brie. I’d love to. See you at school. Xoxo**
She soon replied.
**Okay, see you there then. Xoxo**
Franks POV
I sat around the table with Gee, Mikey and ray discussing what songs we’d play at the festival and I decided which song I’d dedicate to Kat. Ray left to go outside and make a phone call. Gerard ran over the plans, finalising them “so we’ll open with ‘welcome to the black parade’ because that seems appropriate, we’ll do 2 songs and finish with ‘the world is ugly’ which Frank is dedicating to Kat.” We all nodded in agreement.
Moments later Ray walked back in. “booked the gig, were on at 5pm!” Mikey began to clap and actually smiled a little. “So it’s sorted then?” Mikey said after slowly ceasing this applause. “We’re gonna play at the Fall Festival.” I smiled in excitement, I can’t wait to play for Kat! Kat? Oh shit! I told her I was going out for a packet of cigarettes and I’ve been gone for hours. “Guys, I gotta go, Kat’s expecting me!”
I rushed out of the door as the guys waved me off. Racing towards my car I frantically tried to think of what I’d tell Kat, the concert was a surprise so once again I was going to have to make up an excuse. I put the key in the ignition and listened to the engine roar to life, I was hoping the journey home would last a while so I had time to think.
