Not So Bulletproof Hearts

Franks POV

After a few days in the hospital I was allowed to go home. My memory almost seemed back to normal, apart from the memories from the last month or so. I could remember odd parts of it, but there were a lot of gaps that needed filling. I wasn’t allowed to drive for a month either; I couldn’t even if I wanted to anyway. My car was still being repaired, one smashed headlight and the hood needed replacing. That’s $500 out of my college fund gone. Shiloh walked me out of the hospital and to her car.

“So, do you wanna stay at my place or yours?” With every word she said I became more doubtful. Something inside was telling me not to trust her, but ignored my instinct in fear that I was wrong. “Umm, maybe if I was at home I can get used to my surroundings and remember things… remember Kat.” She scowled at mean and her nostrils flared. “Forget about her, Frank, she hurt you. I’m taking you to my place, I can take care of you easier there.”

I slumped down on the passenger seat and rubbed my temples. She didn’t seem like the kind of girl to hurt me. If she hurt me, surely it must have been by accident. I decided to question Shiloh on the matter as she pulled out of the car park. “What did she do? How did she hurt me? I’m just blank, I have no memories of her at all.” She let out an annoyed grunt and turned a sharp corner, the sudden jolt caused me to hit my head on the window pane.

“Ouch! Be careful will you, I only just got out of hospital. There was no need to get mad, I only asked you what she did.” Shiloh’s driving became more careful but I still didn’t feel safe with her. “Gerard had a party after your bands first single went viral and you ended up sleeping with her. She’s wanted you ever since and will do anything in her power to get you.” A sudden moment of realization came over me, like someone turned a light on, like I could breathe again. I could feel the rage burning inside me, my fists were clenching. I could remember that night…

Soon we arrived outside the block of flats Shiloh lived in, it was a grubby building that was supposed to be white I think, the glass pane on the front door had a huge crack through it and the whole place looked like no one had lived in it for years. I couldn’t take it anymore, now was my chance to catch her out. “Shiloh!” I shouted her, she was bent over getting her bag out of the trunk. “What!?” as she looked up the scowl plastered on her face dropped and was replaced by fear and confusion.

“I remember that night at the party, I remember waking up in some girls flat. I don’t remember what I did but I remember who kicked me out the following morning. It wasn’t Kat, I didn’t even know her then.” I swallowed, clearing the lump in my throat and gathered the bravery to say it, the words that would foil her plans to be with me. “That girl was you, Shiloh.” Her eyes widened, she dropped her bag on the street in panic. “N-no, it was Kat!” Shiloh approached me with her arms out stretched to grab me, I pushed her away, watching her eyes well up with tears. “You make me sick!” I spat on the floor next to where she was crouched down crying and left.

I wasn’t really sure where I was going, or where I was for that matter. I just let my feet carry me down the streets of the village. I turned onto the main road and carried on walking, my pace quickened as I felt the pain spreading in my heart. I dropped to my knees and screamed up at the sky. I dropped my head in my hands and tried to get my head around what I should do now.

“Frank, you shouldn’t be walking around here alone, Gee told me what happened. C’mon, I’m taking you to Gee’s house.” I felt a friendly hand touch my shoulder, moving my hands away from my face I gazed up to see Ray smiling down at me, his long curly, almost afro like hair blowing in the breeze. He helped me up and we started to walk down the street.
“What were you doing out here?” I explained to Ray about Shiloh and how I remembered some things that caused me to run off in anger. “Yeah, she’s bad news dude. Do you remember what she did to Kat?” I looked him puzzled and tilted my head. Ray explained to me about how one morning I took Jade to school and we met Shiloh in the car park, he told me how Shiloh pulled Kat’s hair out and threatened her.

That’s when I had another flashback. I was standing next to my car looking down at a girl crying on the floor, she was clutching a piece of hair that had been pulled from her head. “You made a vow to Kat that you wouldn’t let Shiloh hurt her again.” Ray continued. I racked my brain for any more information about her but it was no use, I couldn’t find her. It was almost breaking my heart that I didn’t remember her. She seemed like such a lovely girl and when I told her I didn’t remember who she was it seemed to hurt her a lot. I could almost feel her pain.

Notes

Frank seems to be starting to remember but will he find his love for Kat once again?
