Not So Bulletproof Hearts
The New Girl.
(Kat's POV)
I gazed out the window as my mom’s car was speeding down the country lanes near our new house, I rubbed my eyes and sighed loudly, wishing I was somewhere else. My dad had recently been promoted and was starting work in a different part of the country. This of course meant that we all had to go with him. So we packed our bags, I said goodbye to my old ‘friends’ that I could never really go more than a fortnight without fighting with, and left. Excited, but more so afraid of what was to happen next.
I’d been a city girl up until now. Growing up in a small flat above a bustling high street but all that was about to change. We had moved into an old farm house in a small quaint village, it seemed miles from anywhere. The only thing this town had to offer was a corner shop and a coffee house. UGH. How boring.
I was suddenly brought out of my little day dream as the car slammed to a halt and I my forehead tapped the passenger window. Here we are. The new, boring private school I was now to attend. There was no time to think of an escape route so I just turned to my mom with pleading eyes, hoping for the best. “Kat, we let you have a week off school whist we got settled in. you’re starting school this week whether you like it or not.” I bit down on my lip, dreading what might be waiting. “Fine… I’ll go. Guess it can’t be worse than my last school, right?” Braving a smile I got out of the car and slowly closed the door behind me.
I waited until my mom’s car was completely out of sight until I walked to class. Turning around to walk into the school gates I was suddenly greeted by a young girl. In shock I held my breath and took a step back. “Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you like that. I’m Brianna Sykes… but you can call me Brie! The head sister told me to make sure you got settled in okay.” Sister? Oh yeah. This is a catholic school. Hope they’re not too strict. “Okay, Hi Brie, nice to meet you. I’m Kat Monroe.” I extended my hand and she shook it enthusiastically. “c’mon! We’re going to be late.” Brie took my hand and led me through the courtyard and school doors. I couldn’t help but notice how her hazel eyes glistened in the early morning sun and how her dark brown hair danced on her shoulders as she pulled me down the corridor.
“Right, this is your locker. I’ve already put your books inside and your time table for the week. If you need any help don’t hesitate to come and find me, okay Kat?” I shook my head and smiled, she handed me a small piece of paper. “28-46-97” it read, must be the combination for my locker, I thought. The bell sounded and Brie skipped off to her first class. I placed my bag on the floor in front of me and entered the combination into my new locker. The door clicked open. Gathering my books I bent down to pick my bag up and squished them inside next to my phone and my pens. I closed the door to find a boy with Dark, almost black hair leaning against the locker next to me.
My heart skipped a beat and a lump began to form in my throat. He was gorgeous! I gazed into his beautiful brown eyes, soon my gaze drifted down, I saw his nose ring glint in the fluorescent lighting and a lip ring too, perfectly placed on his smiling mouth. He bit onto the lip ring and then giggled. A chill ran down my spine, his laugh was adorable. “So. I guess we’re locker buddies now?” I was frozen in the moment and unable to make a response. He continued to look deep into my eyes as he opened his locker to collect his books. “I’m Frank Iero by the way” he said throwing his bag over his shoulder. I gulped and smiled at him. “I… I’m Kat Monroe” my voice was shaky. Oh why do I have to get so nervous around guys?!
He pushed his locker closed and I did the same. I gazed at him longer, enchanted by his looks and confidence. I scrunched the time table between my already shaking fingers as he extended his arm towards me. “Let me help you with your time table, it’s quite tricky to find some of the classes.” As his hand grazed my mine a shot of electricity ran through my body. I couldn’t help but smile as my cheeks went pink. Clutching the paper he ran his hand through his hair and studied the time table. “Oh, it seems we have the first class together. Umm… mind if I walk you there?” by now I was bright red and smiling like the Cheshire cat. “that would be wonderful. Thank you.”
He grasped my hand gently, not taking his eyes off me the whole time and together we strolled down the corridor. On the way Frank told me about what the school, The Trinity Academy was like and what he likes to do for fun in the village. His words fell on deaf ears, I was too busy watching his gorgeous mouth draw open and closed, his smile was enough to make my heart melt. “So, Kat what’s your story? What landed you in this hell hole we I call school?”I started telling him about my dad and our big move from the city. His eyes looked glazed as he looked longingly at me, taking in everything I was saying to him.
We stopped outside a small room on a corner. “This is it, Miss Simms’ science lab. Our first class.” He told me whilst smirking at me and giggling slightly. Silence fell. Yet neither of us felt the need to break it. I couldn't look away from him. He was so attractive, the bad boy look but he was such a nice, kind and friendly person too. His hand came up and brushed her side of my face. I held my breath. What is he doing? He tiled his head towards me, he closed his eyes. My mouth dropped open. I couldn’t believe this was happening. He opened his mouth and turned his head to meet mine. I let my eye lids flutter closed, expecting his soft lips to meet mine… all of a sudden the bell sounded again and the corridor began to fill with students. Frank opened his eyes and laughed. He turned to walk into the classroom beckoning me to follow. I felt my heart sink. He didn't kiss me. But then again he was a stranger to me still.
