Run Away With Me
Coffee And Friends
As the end of the day neared I grew nervous and fidgety. 'Calm down, it's just for a project.' I scolded myself. I'm not sure why this simple meeting for a project is causing a burning nervousness to build up in my chest, but it is. It must be because I'm not used to going anywhere with anyone. I wandered out of my ninth period and began searching for Gerard at the front gates. 'Maybe he was just messing with me.' I think when I can't find him. Then, I see him. He was searching through his bag for something and must have felt me staring at him for he looked up. I noticed his face brighten and a smile appeared on his lips. I couldn't help but smile back, his happiness was contagious.
I walked over to him, suddenly excited about getting to spend time with him.
"Hey!" Gerard said, his eyes sparkling. I wonder why he was so happy to see me but decide that he must just be a friendly person.
"Hey." I say in a more casual voice although I still have that stupid grin on my face.
"Shall we go?" He asked in a dramatic cartoon like voice, extending his arm like a prince. I giggled at how silly he looked. Wait did I really just giggle? Whatever, I don't care. We began our walk to town so I could work and he could talk to me. It didn't take long to reach town and I found myself wishing we had walked slower. Once we got to the coffee shop I turned to Gerard.
"Well here we are!" I said with sarcastic enthusiasm.
"It looks nice." Gerard said with a chuckle. I noticed his jersey accent when he said the word nice. I gave him a curious look.
"I thought you just moved here." I questioned.
"I did...." Gerard said looking down, he's an awful liar.
"Why do you have a Jersey accent then?" I pushed further.
" Ok don't tell anyone, but there was a..... problem at my old school." He answered vaguely. I could sense his discomfort so I didn't push the matter any further.
"Alright, well sit there and I will be back to get you something." I say as I walk into the back. Gerard takes his seat at the long table that worked as a barrier between the coffee making area and the sitting area. I clocked in and pulled on the stupid t-shirt that I had to wear. My boss, Jenny, gave me a smile. She wasn't to bad I guess, sometimes she would let me drink some coffee or eat a piece of cake for free.
I went back to Gerard and asked him what he wanted.
"Just a black coffee." He said with a smile.
"Really? I thought you would drink something fun, not something boring." I say playfully as I turn on the coffee machine.
"Really?" He asked me.
"Well yeah, you look artistic and full of life." I told him honestly.
Gerard smiled at this "I love art, I want to become a comic book artist one day." His voice had a certain dreamy helpfulness it made me smile.
I made his coffee in silence and set his cup down in front of him. As my shift went on, Gerard and I made small talk about the project. I hadn't been this happy for so long. I felt as if he could really be my friend. At the end of my shift the sun was setting and I was exhausted, but I was still happy.
"Let me walk you home." Gerard offered. I really wanted to have him walk with me, but I couldn't face the embarrassment if he saw how I lived.
"No it's alright, but thanks I'll talk to you tomorrow." I told him turning away. I was surprised when he pulled me into a quick hug. It scared me at first, I wasn't used to someone being so kind and gentel to me, but it felt great. He was safe and warm and I didn't want to let go, but all to soon he's was pulling away.
"Bye Frank." He whispered with a smile before walking away and leaving me alone.
