Falling Skies

Magnets

The smell penetrated her nose and mouth, even making her eyes sting and water. Coughing violently, she ran over to the corpses, driven by the overwhelming need to find her necklace. Poison had followed her but she didn't pay attention to him, instead, she started searching. Shifting the bodies was difficult due to the smell and the state of decomposition they were in, making them literally fall apart.

'Here, lemme help.' Poison said, his voice low as he tried not to breathe in.

Together, they managed to move one of the bodies, dragging it off the other. And there it was. In a puddle of slimy, red goo. Her necklace, shimmering in the fading sunlight that was coming through the cracks in the walls. She gasped, falling down on her knees. The piece of the puzzle that had been missing, the one that made her complete again. As silly as it seemed, looking at it for the first time in weeks, gave her hope. Hope that everything would be okay. That everything was back to normal or as normal as it could be for her, out here, in this weird place. Sky picked up the necklace and cleaned it up as much as she could. Then she placed it back where it belonged, around her neck.

'Sky....' she could hear Poison behind her and she turned around.

He was holding up a paper. A paper with her photo on it.

'What the hell? What is this?' she asked, forgetting about her necklace.

'I found it in his pocket. Sky, they weren't just out here preying on easy victims. They were looking for you.' she took the piece of paper from him.

The girl on the photo was definitely her. But it wasn't a photograph. It seemed as if someone had generated it with the help of a computer. Below it, there was an actual picture of the necklace, as well as some numbers and letters she couldn't make sense of. And now she remembered details from the night she was attacked.

'They wanted to take me. Back to their headquarters. A man named Korse. He had sent them to look for me. The necklace. They saw it and knew they had the right person. I remember going crazy when I heard them say it and how it was a 'dead giveaway' of some sort.'

Finally, something made sense. Poison frowned and she knew he was worried to hear all that. She stood, facing him.

*

Poison couldn't help but stare at the pendant, now around her neck, the exact same one he was wearing around his. It wasn't just one of the same kind. It was the exact same one. Right down to the very last detail.

That strange feeling was back. The same one he had felt last night when she had told him about her necklace, only a hundred times stronger this time. He couldn't take his eyes off of the silver charm. He had believed her words but seeing it was just so much weirder. It was almost like he was hypnotized.

'We should go. It's getting dark.' Sky pointed out and he realized how close they were as he felt her breath on his skin. It made him shiver.

They got into the car but as he reached to turn the key in the ignition, he hesitated. Sky looked at him with a questioning look on her face.

'What is it?' she asked.

'Korse...that name sounds so familiar. I've heard it before but I just can't seem to remember where. Or when. But Sky, why would he be looking for you?' he said, looking down at the piece of paper she was still holding in her hands.

'I wish I knew. But I was right, the necklace is relevant in some way. Which means, so is yours. And the fact that we both have it.'

It all meant something. There was no doubt about it. It hadn't been a coincidence and the more he thought about it, the more obvious it seemed that everything that had happened in the past few weeks, had happened for a reason. He was never one to believe in fate or destiny, his strong sense of having control over everything, had kept him from ever believing in something like that. Now things were different. A lot different.

'You're right. And we need to find out what it is. I just don't know how yet.' he finally started the car and not even sure which way he was going, they sped off.

It took them less than two hours to get back to the diner. Which wasn't just weird, it was one other thing Poison couldn't explain.

*

The others were still up, sitting in a booth and playing cards, when Sky and Poison entered the diner. Sky had tucked her necklace away under her shirt for now, not wanting to draw attention to it.

'Oh sweet, back from your honeymoon?' Ghoul teased and looked them up and down.

'Anything happen while we were gone?' Poison asked, ignoring his stupid comment.

'Nah but what the hell happened to you? That smell is vile. And you don't look so fresh. Got into trouble?' Ghoul replied and Jet and Kobra scrunched up their noses in agreement.

'Not exactly. It's a long story but now's not the time. It's nothing to worry about though, we took care of it.' Poison explained. Sky couldn't help but feel awkward and responsible for the fact that he had to justify himself now.

The other three seemed to relax a little, knowing that Poison probably had a good reason for not telling them what had happened just yet. After all, they trusted him and his decisions even though they sometimes disagreed. He didn't like keeping secrets from them either, but in this case it was necessary. They wouldn't understand. Ultimately neither Sky nor himself could and there was a lot to talk about before they could share it with anyone else.

'Well, you should shower. You literally smell like rotting carcasses.' Jet pointed out and Sky swallowed hard. Oh, how very right he was, she thought but disguised it with a smirk, trying to play it cool.

Ten minutes later, they were sitting next to each other on her bed, clean and dressed in fresh clothing. There was a lot they had to discuss. A lot they had to decide. And no idea where to start. It felt like they had been gone for a very long time, almost as if they had been to a far away place and now it would take some getting used to being back in the real world again. Which was weird since this was now the only place she had ever called home.

'Thank you. For doing this for me.' she had moved closer, nudging his shoulder with hers.

'I'm glad you got it back. I can only imagine how weird I'd feel if I ever lost mine. I had no idea how important it really was.' Poison answered.

'I think it led you to me, you know. Just how it led us back there today.' she turned to face him and he looked down at her pendant, weirdly drawn to it as he observed the familiar object again.

'Like magnets? But that would mean that they're connected. Yours and mine.'

Was that even possible? It sounded crazy. But the more she thought about it, the more it made sense. The force he had described feeling, the connection they instantly had, the strong emotions and reaction she had felt when she had seen his necklace, the way they had found their way back to the shack and the weird tension that almost lit the air between them on fire.

*

'Maybe they are. Maybe we are.' she whispered and without thinking, Poison reached out, touching her necklace carefully.

It felt like a sudden flow of electricity had struck him out of nowhere, as though he had stuck his hand into a power socket, the sensation of it almost making him pass out. Sky gasped and by the shocked look on her face, she must have felt it too. It made the hairs on the back of his neck stand, every inch of his skin was tingling. His heart started racing, uncontrollably and something flashed before his eyes, something he couldn't grasp. The emotion he felt was overwhelming, a warmth spreading throughout his entire body. Poison retracted his hand as if he'd been burnt, looking at Sky who was holding her breath, her cheeks flushed.

'What the fuck was that?' Poison asked, not expecting an answer from her. He was bewildered.

'That was intense.'

'That's an understatement.' he replied and didn't try to stop her when she pulled his necklace out from under his shirt.

For a moment she seemed to search for something in his eyes, almost as if to ask for permission and he nodded his approval. Again, he felt the powerful energy devouring him. This time, it was slightly different though. As if he experienced it through Sky. He wondered if she had felt the same way when he had touched hers.

When she removed her hand, something about the expression on her face worried him. Something was different. Something was different between them. And he couldn't tell whether that was good or bad.

'I'm scared.' she just whispered and his heart leapt into his throat.

'Me too.' he admitted and he could feel her skinny fingers entwining his, her touch making him jump almost as much as the sensation of touching her necklace and all of a sudden, everything was so clear to him.

She belonged to him and he belonged to her. For some unexplainable reasons that didn't even matter right now, it was all meant to be. It had been from the beginning, just like Sky had said. He had found her for a reason, he had saved her life for a reason and he had never been so sure of anything before. As anxious as it made him feel, he had no doubts. They were meant to be together. It was something bigger than them and it had them under its spell, a force of nature that he happily gave himself up to. And when he pulled her close to kiss her, he could tell she felt exactly the same way.

Notes

For OBVIOUS reasons, this was the hardest chapter to write so far. I don't even remember how many times I started over or edited it but I hope you like the result. And I hope you like where it's going. I kinda didn't want Poison and Sky's relationship to change because I liked that there was no 'sexual tension' and not too much awkwardness between them but change is necessary to keep the story interesting in this case and OF COURSE it's all part of something 'bigger'. So please keep reading and find out what it is.

Thanks for all the feedback and for subscribing! And whoever gave me 10 stars - it means a lot, thank you!
