Falling Skies
Epilogue
'Mommy, Mommy, look! Look what I found!' the little girl came running towards her, her curly dark hair bouncing wild as she did.
Sky smiled, eager to see what her daughter had found. As she held out her tiny hands to her, full of seashells and sand, pride was radiating from her four-year old face, as though she had found a long lost treasure. Behind her, her twin brother followed, holding up a huge crab, also dying to show it off.
'Wow, Lights, that is beautiful. We have to clean and dry them and then you can keep them.' she told the little girl and she smiled, nodding.
'I'm a hunter!' the little boy roared and let himself fall on the blanket next to Sky and Lights, still holding the crab which made his sister shriek.
'Stop it, Star!' she pleaded and her brother giggled and put the crab down in the sand, watching it do its funny sideways walk.
'A hunter! Wow, I never thought I'd meet a real hunter!' Sky touched the animal carefully and smiled at her son, his hazel eyes lightening up at her words. 'But don't you wanna put it back where you found it, honey?' Sky asked him and he looked up, nodding.
'I'm gonna put it back, I promise, Mommy. But I wanna show it to Daddy first. Can I?' he replied.
'Of course you can.' she answered and Lights had already started cleaning the shells, preparing to present them to her father and Star jumped up when he saw him emerge from the tiny house that stood a few yards away, carrying a basket.
Sky's heart began to flutter when Poison looked at her and she stood as well, brushing off the sand. He had been gone all day, checking in with his team on the mainland and bringing back deliveries and she had missed him, like she always missed him when he had to leave. But she reminded herself that it was for their safety and for everyone else's.
His hair was black again, its natural color. It was odd how he had transformed back into the boy she had been created with, letting go of his Killjoy identity. Even when she looked at their children, their hair dark in color like their father's but curly, just like Sky's, it was almost like looking into a mirror of their own childhood.
'Daddy!!!!' Star and Lights screamed in unison and ran to meet him. Poison put down the basket and caught them in his arms, lifting them both up over his shoulders, making them giggle and squeal.
He was such an amazing dad. Sky never thought that she could love him more but from the moment they had found out that they were going to be parents, shortly after the liberation, something changed. Although they were both so young and had no idea what to do at first, he seemed to be a natural, even during the pregnancy. He always knew exactly what she needed, how to make her more comfortable, how to calm her down when she was freaking out, thinking she wouldn't be ready to be a good mom. And neither of them had actually been ready when the twins arrived but seeing Poison holding them in his arms for the first time, Sky was sure that everything was going to be okay.
He had built her a house on the beach, just like he had always wanted to and it had been finished just in time. Now, almost five years later, Sky couldn't even remember how the sticky desert heat had felt on her skin, as the warm afternoon sun mixed with the slight breeze from the ocean wrapped her in a invisible, comfortable blanket.
'Wanna show me what you found today?' Poison said, putting the kids down and finally walking over to Sky, pulling her into a hug. He kissed the nape of her neck softly and she could feel him breathe in her scent and smile against her skin, his affections making her dizzy with love.
'Hi.' she whispered and he whispered back a sweet hello. He let go of her again, resting his hand on the tiny bump that was starting to show under her loose, sheer dress. Looking into her eyes lovingly, he smiled a huge smile before he turned his attention back to Star and Lights who were presenting the seashells and the crab.
Their lives had changed completely and it hadn't been difficult for them to adjust. This, this right here was what Sky and Poison had been fighting for all this time. The sacrifices they had made, the blood that had been shed, the pain, the fear, the hopes and the dreams, it had led them here. Where they could still look up at the night sky and see the stars. Where they could smell the sweet scent of rain again. Where Poison held Sky in his arms while watching their kids play with seashells, just like Chip had told him on their way to destroy Battery City.

Notes
So...for now I decided against a sequel and went with an epilogue instead, but who knows, never say never. Like I said, I don't think I'm ready to let go of this story for good just yet.I'm working on a new story that's keeping me busy right now and I don't want to write two at a time. It's totally different to this one but I'd love it if you checked it out.
