Falling Skies

The Night of the Alignment

Her shaking hands caressed his face, trying to look for a reaction or any movement. When he didn't react, when nothing happened at all, she grabbed his shoulders, shaking him. But again, nothing. She knew he was gone. She could not only see it, she felt it. Although blood was seeping from the wound in his chest, his heart had stopped beating. And it felt as if hers had stopped with it. There was commotion in the room, voices, but nothing got through to her. It was like the world around her had stopped existing.

'Wake up. Poison, wake up. WAKE UP! PLEASE WAKE UP!' she screamed as she continued to shake him, convinced that she could somehow bring him back.

'He's gone....Sky. Please...we have to go. We'll come back for him, I promise.' a hushed voice said after what seemed like hours and someone grabbed her arm but she slapped it away, pulling Poison's body closer to hers. She didn't care anymore. Why care about anything.

'No...I won't leave him.' she just whispered and finally, the tears started falling. He was gone. He was really gone.

'Sky, please.'

'GO AWAY! Leave us alone! Just go!' she yelled, pressing her eyes shut, wishing she could just do something, anything. The one person she had ever loved, the one person who had ever loved her, was gone, and there was nothing she could do except die with him. She wished for death more than ever before.

'We will hold them back as long as we can. But Sky, we won't be able to keep them away for long.' the voice said but she didn't pay attention. Let them come, she thought. Let them come and kill me too.

Then she was alone. Alone with Poison in her arms. She put him back down on the floor gently, wiping his hair from his face, finally closing his eyes which had lost all spark. The boy who had saved her life, and she failed at saving his. He was still beautiful. It seemed like an eternity since she had woken up next to him, still tired from staying up all night, making love to him. The pain took her breath away and she almost choked on her tears, not wanting to believe what was right in front of her. Sky started shaking him again, angry at herself, angry at him, angry at whoever had created them, angry at the universe for being cruel and separating them not only once but twice, and this time, for good. She ripped open his bloody shirt, almost fainting when she saw the bullet hole in his chest, right where she would usually rest her head and fall asleep to the strong beating of his heart. There was only one thing left to do. Without really thinking, she reached for her gun, lifting it up to her head and pressing it against her temple. Her other hand grabbing his necklace, trying to connect with him one last time. I love you, she thought, and I'll be with you soon.

Suddenly, she jumped, dropping her gun in response when she heard a loud gasp. Opening her eyes, she stared into Poison's, feeling his heartbeat and his chest rising against the palm of her hand.

*

'Sky...' he mouthed, looking at her face which was pale with shock. He grabbed her arm, still feeling as though he was falling into a bottomless pit.

She stared at him in disbelief, tears running down her cheeks as she studied his face, her bloody hands pressing down on his chest.

'You're alive.' she whispered and he was confused for a moment. Alive?

Slowly but surely everything came back to him. The cabin. Agents. The room where they had found the Stargazer. Sending Ghoul to leave with him through another exit they had found while he had decided to stay behind and search for documents. The man with the gun who had appeared out of nowhere and shot him. Shot him? He sat up, ignoring the dizziness and looked down on himself and sure enough, there was a bullet hole in his chest but it had already started to close. He looked at Sky, who reached out to touch it again.

'You did this.' he said with a weak voice. 'Sky...you did this. How?'

'I don't know.' she whimpered, pulling him into a hug, her hands desperately holding on to him as if she were drowning.

There was no doubt. She had brought him back. Somehow she had brought him back to life. That realization made his whole body tremble, suddenly aware just how powerful their bond really was. The Phoenix Witch had been right, about everything.

'We need to go. The others are out there, waiting.' she sniveled, letting go of him. She was smiling although the tears were still coming, relentlessly. 'Do you think you can walk?'

He nodded although he didn't know for sure. But with Sky's help, he was able to stand up. Looking around for a moment, he was stunned to see the amount of blood he had lost on the floor. There was no way he would have survived this, even with a doctor or in a hospital. He should be dead. He had been dead.

She put his arm around her shoulders for support and he showed her the second exit he had found earlier. The sun was about to go down when they emerged from the tunnel, a few yards away from the cabin.

'HOLD YOUR FIRE! IT'S SKY AND POISON!' they could hear Kobra yelling from his position and they looked around. About six dead draculoids were lying dead on the ground, their disgusting smell already in the air. A few minutes later, they heard the car approaching, Jet and Ghoul jumping out before it had even come to a standstill.

'How...' Jet just mumbled, staring at Poison as if he had seen a ghost.

'Poison! Sky...what happened? I thought you were...' Ghoul ran towards them, grabbing Poison's other arm to help Sky support his weight.

'Is the Stargazer safe?' Poison just asked, ignoring the obvious.

'Yes. He's in the car.' Ghoul answered while Jet still looked at both Poison and Sky in shock.

*

Sky never wanted to let go of him again, too scared of what would happen if she did. There was no possible explanation for what she had done but it had happened, there was no doubt about it. He had been dead. And now he was alive.

'So it is really true.' the man had gotten out of the car and was now also staring at the pair. 'The boy and the girl are safe. And reunited.'

'Yeah, they are. But you can catch up later, we have to get away from here, it's likely there are more agents on the way.' Kobra had joined them, unaware of what had happened since he had taken position up on the hill. 'What the fuck? Whose blood is that?' he said when he examined Poison. 'Is that a fucking bullet wound?'

'Later, brother. Let's get outta here.' Poison said and they all got into the car, with Sky sitting on Poison's lap to make room for the extra passenger who was eyeing them curiously.

'I'm gonna make sure no one is following us.' Ghoul said, looking down on the mini radar he was carrying as Jet hit the gas.

They arrived back at the diner in the middle of the night. Poison had been asleep for most of the ride with Sky holding his wrist to keep track of his pulse. No one had talked but they all knew that as soon as they entered the diner, there would be a lot of questions and hopefully just as many answers.

Poison was still weak but the color was back on his face. It was an unreal but beautiful feeling seeing him, alive, when just hours ago she had wept for him, both of them covered in his blood.

'There's no way. Maybe you weren't really dead after all.' Jet said and Sky would have agreed, hadn't she been there, seen it with her own two eyes, feeling for a heartbeat she couldn't find with her own two hands.

'Are you really that surprised?' the Stargazer had gotten up from the booth where they had ordered him to sit while they had discussed what had happened.

Sky swallowed hard. It was only now that she became aware that this was the man from their flashbacks and she grabbed Poison's hand.

'You! You were there. In the exam room. When we were kids.' Poison said, taking a step forward.

'Indeed I was. I was there all along. I was there before you were even born.'

*

There were so many things Poison wanted to ask but he couldn't figure out how to start. So much had happened in the last couple of hours that he couldn't make sense of anything. Thankfully, Sky spoke.

'So we were born? Who are our parents?' she asked and the man smiled, motioning them to sit down with him.

'That doesn't matter. What matters is how you were created.'

'Well how were we created?' Sky was getting impatient as always and Poison squeezed her hand, trying to calm her down. The man smiled when he saw the gesture.

'It was an experiment. Something that I invested millions in, something that I had been working on since the war began. All based on a legend I had heard from the natives. I was just a young man back then but I was smart and desperate, thinking I could change the world for the better. Luckily, my colleagues and I were able to find two women, willing to participate. Both of you were conceived on May 26th, 2013, almost 21 years ago.'

Poison looked at Sky, who was listening carefully now and raised an eyebrow.

'Is that supposed to mean something?' he asked and the man laughed.

'It means everything. The planets Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, lined up that night, creating a very strong connection between them.' he continued. 'Legend has it that when this rare astronomical event happens, forces, much stronger than those here on earth are at play, releasing an energy that is beyond imagination. We took the gamble. And we were right. Both of you were born at the exact same time, five weeks too early. From the very beginning, you two had a very strong bond. We placed you next to each other and you would grab each others hands and that strange energy would fill the room. I knew it then. That you were special.'

'Just because three planets aligned? Jeez, what have you guys been smokin' in your little lab?' Sky got up and walked over to the counter, clearly distraught by what the Stargazer had said.

'You think I'm crazy? Then tell me Sky, did you or didn't you just bring Poison back to life after he'd been shot right in the heart? By simply touching that little necklace around his neck, wishing he'd come back?' she turned around, glaring at him, then looking at Poison, her eyes filling with tears again and he got up to join her, putting his arms around her.

'It's okay, Sky.' he just whispered and she started crying on his shoulder. 'So what's with the pendants?' Poison then asked the man while trying to comfort Sky.

'The night you were born, a small meteorite hit, just a few miles away from our station. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe it wasn't. But we collected the debris and melted it down, then made your necklaces out of it. Now we all know that the necklaces are what connects you. And the fact that they are so powerful also confirms my theory.'

'And what's your theory?' Poison asked.

'That whatever power helped me created you, that night of the alignment, gave you the power you have today. And it's unleashed whenever you touch each other's pendants.'
