Falling Skies

Wait for me

Sky gasped and breaking away from his embrace she turned around to face him. What did he just say? Maybe she had imagined it? For a brief second she wasn't so sure. That feeling that began to rise from her stomach and up to her chest made her hold her breath. He looked at her, biting his lip, his expression that of a child waiting to be scolded for doing something naughty.

'Say it again.' she whispered, still thinking, almost hoping that she had misheard him. He looked at the floor, then into her eyes again.

'I love you.'

She didn't know whether she was happy or sad. She had no idea what to feel because it was the first time anyone had ever said that to her. It was silly because she had known long before he said it but it was different hearing it from his lips. It made it all real. Shaking, she reached out to touch his face, her fingertips merely brushing over his skin. He still had so much of that little boy she remembered from that exam room they had both been in years ago. And even back then he had loved her, it was showing in the same hazel eyes.

'I love you too.' she replied, not even thinking, just feeling. He was hers and she was his. It had always been that way and it would always be that way.

His face lit up and he smiled the biggest, most infectious smile. It made a comfortable warmth spread through her entire body and she finally took a deep breath. Suddenly it felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off of her shoulders, easing all the tension. They had just taken a huge step towards uncertainty but she was sure it would help them find whatever it was they were looking for.

They kissed for what seemed like an eternity but Sky still didn't want to stop. It would never be enough.

'So...can I sleep in your room tonight?' Poison asked her when they finally did leave the bathroom and she smiled at his question. How could she ever say no, especially now, after what just happened.

'Okay. But only tonight.' she answered, not sure how long she would be able to abide by her own arrangement.

Poison was happy. Despite not sharing a room with Sky anymore, they were closer than ever before. They spent their time training and driving out to the bunker, checking to see if the rebels had picked up Dr D's broadcast and followed their request. So far, there had been four notes and they were satisfied with that considering they didn't have any expectations in order to avoid disappointment. It was good to know that they weren't alone in this after all. That people still had the faith and courage to stand up and do something even if it was a shot in the dark for everyone involved. Still, the Killjoys refused to get their hopes up just yet. They still had a long way to go.

Everything was back to normal with him and Kobra as well. Of course he was still concerned about his relationship with Sky but he couldn't deny the fact that seeing them both happy made him happy too.

'It worries me but seeing you sad would worry me more.' he had said one night.

Kobra now trained with Sky again every day and their friendship was strong. Preparing for the rebels kept them so busy that they hardly ever spoke of their past again and it filled Poison with anxiety. Although Sky was usually the one to be impatient, he was wondering why they had come to such a standstill in the process. Maybe they weren't trying hard enough. Maybe it was something they had to practise, just like they had to practise everything else? But how? It was Kobra who helped him find the answer.

'What's the deal with the necklaces?' he asked him one night as Poison took off his dirty shirt. He looked down on himself, twisting the piece of metal between his fingers.

'I guess they connect us.' Poison answered, slightly frustrated that he had to guess.

'And in your memory, from your childhood, you had them too, right?' Kobra asked and he nodded. 'Hmm...then they must have given them to you so you could find each other again? And whenever you touched them, there was this weird feeling? Didn't you say that Sky learned how to shoot by touching your necklace, wishing she could do it?'

'That's just a theory.' he couldn't help but question it since it sounded so unbelievable, especially when Kobra said it out loud.

'Then it's time to test it.' Kobra simply replied.

Sky was surprised when Poison sneaked into her room. They had said goodnight hours ago and she had already been asleep.

'What's going on?' she asked, confused and sleepy.

Truth be told, as much as she missed having him around at night, falling asleep in his arms and waking up to his kisses, the feeling that took hold of her as he entered the room, only in his shorts, remembered her why they had agreed on sleeping in separate rooms. But Poison didn't seem to care as he crawled into her bed, resting his head on the pillow next to her.

'We need to try something.' he whispered and her heart started beating faster immediately.

'I don't think so.' she replied, sitting up but he pulled her back down.

'Sky...' he seemed serious so she decided to let him explain.

But instead of explaining, he simply reached out and took her necklace, closing his hand around the pendant and looked at her, obviously expecting her to do the same. She had no idea why he was so interested in doing this again, since they had both agreed that it wasn't the right time to pursue the power these necklaces so clearly had. Especially because they didn't know about the consequences. It was scary.

'Don't be scared.' Poison said, his eyes still focused on hers and she could already feel herself calming down, almost as if he was inside her head.

Sky moved closer to him and he smiled when she grabbed his necklace and although the feeling was familiar, it was still overwhelmingly intense. She gasped, not sure where her thoughts would lead her this time. The last time they had done this, something crazy had happened. Now all she wanted was to know more. Know where this power was coming from, know why the two of them could create it, together. Know what they had to do in order to find out. Remember.

Suddenly, Sky found herself somewhere else. She was peeking through a door at two people arguing. A man and a woman.

'It's too early. They're not ready yet!' she recognized the woman's voice immediately. It was the same woman who had been with her in the bright room, trying to calm her down.

'We don't have a choice. Korse knows. He knows! And once he finds us, once he finds them, this will all have been for nothing. We can't risk losing them. Not to him. They're too valuable. They're too dangerous.' the man answered and now Sky realized she wasn't alone. Next to her was Poison, about ten years old, also closely listening in on the conversation.

'They are NOT ready. They are children. They are going to die out there.' it was the woman speaking again.

'Then we didn't do a very good job at breeding them. It's decided. They will be released. Once they're ready, they will find their way back together, unite and carry out their mission. If not, then God help us all.'

In this moment, the woman spotted them. Sky gasped, looking at Poison who pulled her with him, running down a corridor, away from the pair who followed them. After turning a few corners, he pushed her into a dark room, closing the door behind them and they held their breaths while their pursuers rushed by, unaware where the children were hiding. Poison let out a sigh of relief and Sky could hear him search his pockets for what turned out to be a small flashlight. They were in a supply closet.

'Did you hear what they said? They wanna separate us. We can't let them. We can't.' she said and hugged him, unsuccessfully trying to stop her tears.

'It doesn't matter, Sky. I'll find you. I'll find you anywhere, I promise. Please, just wait for me, okay.' Poison hugged her back and she closed her eyes, trying to memorize his scent, the sense of safety she felt in his arms, the love that she felt he had for her, desperately hoping that he could feel hers.

A few seconds later, the door was yanked open.

Poison knew that all he had to do was let go of the necklace to make it stop. But as disturbed as he was, he couldn't, so she was the one who broke the connection, the feeling similar to that of the falling sensation he sometimes felt when he was about to nod off. They looked at each other in the dark and it seemed as though only seconds had passed since they had been in the supply closet together. Neither of them were surprised at what had just happened. On the contrary, it was an oddly comforting feeling, visiting their past together, finding out that they had indeed been 'bred' for a purpose, a purpose they had to fulfill together and that was of utmost importance to a lot of people.

He was surprised when she kissed him, pressing her body against his but of course he responded without hesitation. It had been too long since the last time they had shared anything as passionate as this.

'I think I know what we have to do.' she breathed against his lips, her tone of voice confusing him.

'What's that?' he asked and she kissed him again, her tongue sweet and warm in this mouth.

She took his breath away, her lips devouring his with such a force, he could only respond with the same. He could feel her heart beating against his, the same fast, steady rhythm.

'Unite.' she mumbled and she left his lips, starting to kiss up his jawline to his ear, where she sucked lightly, making him unable to even think about, let alone reply to what she just said.

There was no need for it either, she had already taken control of him, knowing exactly what to do and how to do it. Her hands were traveling over his body, shaking although she seemed so confident in what she wanted, making him gasp when she slipped one hand into his underwear.

'Woooo...Sky...woo...wait.' he grabbed her arm and she looked at him in surprise.

'What?' she asked, sounding slightly offended that he had stopped her.

'Not so fast.' he replied and she frowned. 'That's not how it works.'

'How would you know how it works? It seems to me you're ready.' Sky kissed his neck again but again, he stopped her.

'I just do. And you need to be ready too, you know.' he smiled at the confused look on her face. As a matter of fact, Poison had no idea what he was doing but he knew it wasn't supposed to happen that fast. There was so much about her that he still had to discover.

'I am.' she whispered, blushing slightly and now he was the one who kissed her.

'Well, I wanna make sure.' he mumbled as he gently pushed her on her back and she wrapped her arms around his neck.
