Falling Skies
Dreams
That night, Sky had the weirdest dream. She was in a room, a bright light blinding her from above, she laid there, strapped to a bed. Around her, there were people in surgical masks, some holding up X-rays and scans, some files and one of them suddenly approached her with a needle.
'Shh little girl. Shhh.' the voice of a woman said to her, trying to calm her down but Sky started crying helplessly. The next thing she knew, someone was shaking her and she pressed her eyes shut, too scared to look.
'Sky. Sky wake up. Wake up.' another voice said from further away while the shaking continued. 'Wake up. You're having a nightmare. Sky!'
She finally opened her eyes to see Poison looking at her, trying to jolt her out of her dreams. Immediately she sat up, not sure where she was for a second.
'What...?' it was dark but he had turned on his flashlight, trying to help her orientate herself.
'Are you okay?' he put his arm around her and pulled her into a hug and she nodded softly before resting her head on his shoulder.
In this moment, she was so glad he was here. She hadn't had a nightmare in so long and this one hadn't even been relatable but still so realistic, her heart was pounding in her chest. Sky closed her eyes, trying to calm herself down. She focused on the fact that she was here, with Poison, who was protecting her and taking care of her. As long as they were together, everything would be okay.
'Wanna tell me about the dream? I always used to tell Kobra when we were little and it helped.' Poison suggested but she just wanted to go back to sleep so she just shook her head and laid back down in bed. The previous day had drained all the energy from her.
He wrapped his arms around her and let her snuggle up against him and she felt a bit more relaxed as he placed soft little kisses on her neck and shoulder. Tonight, the dream didn't matter and all she wanted to think of was reality. Thankfully, she soon fell back asleep and no more nightmares interrupted her for the rest of the night.

Poison could tell that Sky wanted to stay but it was time to go back to the diner. She felt connected to this place and so did he, thanks to what they experienced here together, seeing the cave and talking to the Phoenix Witch, finding out at least something about their mysterious past. But they had to return to their lives as Killjoys, no matter how much more there was to their story. They had responsibilities and they couldn't just leave it all behind, leave Jet, Kobra and Ghoul behind, in order to solve the puzzle. And if Poison's intuition was right, it was all connected anyway. Although he had no idea what to really do next, he knew that they had to start back at the diner again.
Around noon, they left the gas station.
They decided to drive through the night, with Kobra and Poison taking turns. They weren't exactly in a hurry but since they knew the way now, there was no need to take longer than needed, especially because everyone seemed to be in a weird mood. No one was talking, Sky was asleep for most of the journey and Poison couldn't sleep, even when it was Kobra's turn to drive.
'So what's the deal with Sky? I mean I know you are like...connected or something but...you really got a thing for her?' Kobra asked, finally breaking the silence when he noticed Poison was still awake. He sighed, not looking forward to this conversation.
'It's not like that.' he replied, keeping his voice low.
'Oh really? Cos there was definitely something going on when I came into your room yesterday. And it didn't look like you were just, ya know, trying to figure out that whole fallen children thing.' Kobra said and it was moments like this that showed Poison that they really weren't related after all.
'You really don't know what you're talking about, Kobra.' Poison sighed and lit a cigarette, opening the window to let out the smoke.
'Oh and you do? Since when are you the relationship expert? I don't remember you ever being with a girl before but hey, correct me if I'm wrong.'
He had a point. He had never been with anyone before but what did that matter?
'It's not about that. I mean...' he had a hard time putting it into words. 'That bond we have, it's not just physical attraction, you know. Actually, that's something that just happened. I think when we touched each other's necklaces. I thought she was beautiful before that but...the necklace just made everything we were feeling a thousand times stronger. It like, released all these thoughts and feelings and I think eventually it will help us remember too.'
Kobra was quiet for a while, focusing on the road. It was uncomfortable talking to any of the guys about Sky. They didn't understand because they had never felt like that before. It had always just been them. There had been girls in the village they grew up in but they had been taught to stay away from each other. Not because their parents didn't want anything to happen between them but because there was simply no room for romance in this world and that was it. Their focus had to remain on survival. Even Kobra's parents had never been 'in love'. The kids knew it was more of a partnership of convenience and it was only now that Poison was learning about the difference. He got the feeling that sometimes they even regretted having Kobra in the first place, how difficult it had been to bring him up and keep him alive until he was old enough to care for himself if necessary. Yes, they had taken Poison in but only because he had already reached that less critical age.
'You don't know how to love, Poison. You only know how to kill and that's all you need to know in this world. I get that you two have a connection but you should stop playing house because it's only gonna get you into trouble.' Kobra's voice sounded cold and full of bitterness.

Sky had heard everything. And she wasn't even mad at Kobra, on the contrary, she totally understood where he was coming from. These thoughts had crossed her mind more than just once. The witch had said they were made for each other. But did that mean they could act on their feelings? As much as she wanted to be close to him, as much as she enjoyed his kisses, his touches, the fact that he so obviously enjoyed it too, what if it wasn't what they were supposed to do? What if something bad would happen if they took it one step too far?
A few hours later they arrived back at the diner and although she was tired and just wanted to curl up in bed, she couldn't help but smile when she saw Ghoul waiting for them outside.
'Hey gang.' he greeted them and came over to the car to help them unload. 'What happened to your knee, Sky?'
'Oh I just fell. Nothing serious.' she explained and did a little kick to show him that it was really just a scratch.
'You look like hell though, no offense. Didn't get much sleep?' they started carrying the stuff back into the diner and now Sky could feel how exhausted she really was.
It irritated her. She had slept and although it hadn't been the most invigorating sleep, there was no reason why she should feel as drained as she did. Ghoul stepped closer and put his hand on her forehead.
'You have a fever. I'm gonna get Poison.'
'No! Don't. I'm just gonna get some sleep and I'll be fine in a couple of hours. There's no need to tell him. You know he's just gonna want to play nurse again and you got more important things to do. He needs to be the one to update you and you don't really need me for that anyway.' she said, panicking suddenly. The last thing she wanted to do was spend time with Poison alone right now, him taking care of her and fussing over a little bit of fever.
Ghoul agreed to not tell Poison but he gave her some pills and an extra large bottle of water. She went to bed, already feeling dizzy from the medication and fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
Again, she found herself strapped to the hospital bed with all these people surrounding her, looking down on her. She heard the voice of the woman again, trying to calm her down. And then she felt something cold around her neck. She looked down and saw the necklace, placed there by someone leaning over her. As she looked down on herself she realized it wasn't her body she was looking at. Not the body she had now anyway, it was a child's body. She was still a child.
'It's okay, little girl. Look, he's right over there. No need to be scared.' the woman said and pointed to her right.
Sky gasped as she saw the little boy with jet black hair a few feet away from her, also in a bed, also with a necklace around his neck. He reached for her, extending a skinny, bruised arm. But she couldn't get to him, the straps holding her down. She had never felt so happy and sad at the same time.
*
'He's burning up.' Kobra noted, dragging Poison over to one of the booths. He felt like shit and even that was an understatement. He felt cold but was sweating, his throat dry and his whole body so heavy that he had almost collapsed just a moment ago.
'Sky has a fever too.' Ghoul said and his voice sounded like it was coming from far away.
'What?' he could hear another voice say.
'I gave her some meds and told her to lay down. I had no idea he was sick too.'
'He wasn't sick. He was fine until a few minutes ago! We gotta get him to bed.'
Next thing he knew, he was dragged away from the booth and into his room. The guys put him down on his bed.
'Sky...' he mumbled and tried to reach for her.
'She's fine, she's asleep. Don't worry about her. Ghoul, check on Sky.' it was his brother speaking and he grabbed his arm, tucking him in under the sheets.
'She still has a fever but not as high anymore. Her vitals are normal as far as I can tell.'
Poison felt slightly better hearing that she was doing okay. Kobra made him swallow some medicine and helped him wash it down with plenty of water. A few minutes later, he was fast asleep.
He could hear a little girl crying, next to him, just a few steps away. Immediately, that sound put everything into focus. The room he was in, brightly lit but uncomfortably chilly, the man who was standing there, removing weird wires that were attached to his chest with something sticky. The chest that of a little boy, not a young man. The man then loosened the straps that were holding him down on a bed. Around him, there were weird machines, with monitors beeping and the man walked over to turn one of them off. Poison then heard the crying again and now able to move, turned to the left. There was a girl, looking at him, her cheeks wet from crying. She was about his age, a head full of wild curls and her blue eyes brightened up when she saw him. All he could do was reach for her but she was too far away.
'It's okay. She's okay. No need to worry. You both did very well.' the man said and put a necklace around his neck. 'Come on. You can go now. They will be done with her soon and then you can play together.'
He hesitated. He didn't want to leave her there and he knew she didn't want him to go. But the man picked him up and carried him out of the room and the last thing he could hear was the little girl, crying for him.
