Falling Skies

Mates

'The fallen children.' she repeated, staring at them.

Sky's heart was pounding and she was clinging to Poison, wishing this nightmarish creature would just go away. The woman had appeared out of nowhere and what freaked Sky out the most was that she was completely dry although it was raining cats and dogs outside. There was nothing threatening about the old woman's appearance, if anything, she looked fragile and vulnerable. Although her yellowish eyes made her look creepy, it was her sudden arrival that was the scariest thing about her. That and the fact that she was muttering the same thing over and over again, in a low, croaky voice that made everyone in the room uncomfortable.

'Who are you?!' Jet finally asked, drawing his gun and pointing it at the woman.

'Jet, don't!' Poison said and instantly pushed his gun back down, Jet giving him an irritated look. Sky shuddered as she saw the old woman grin.

'You have been looking for me, Killjoys.' she said, stepping forward as Jet put his gun away again. 'I felt your presence and I knew how badly you wanted to speak to me.'

Sky now realized her eyes weren't just an odd color, they were clouded, showing an odd resemblance to the angry sky above them. She was blind. But weirdly enough, Sky was still convinced she could see them.

'Phoenix Witch?' Poison gasped and the woman smiled a toothless smile.

Surprised, Sky loosened her tight grip around Poison and she grabbed his hand instead, not as scared anymore. Even though she was still shaken up, her curiosity took over and she could feel the energy in the room changing.

'Indeed, child.' she replied and Sky could tell he was not happy being called a child but he decided to hold his tongue, for now.

'The storm. Did you-...?' Sky spoke but realized how ridiculous it sounded. No one could just cause a storm but the witch just smiled again, making Sky move closer to Poison again.

'Ask the questions that matter, Sky.' the Phoenix Witch replied and everyone froze when they heard her call her by her name.

They had gone over this countless times. Had prepared their speech in case they would find her. But now that she had found them, it seemed as though they didn't know what to do or say anymore. There were so many questions and she probably wouldn't even be able to answer them, so Sky just asked the most obvious one.

'What does 'The fallen children' mean? And why were you saying it to us?'

'You. You are the fallen children.' she pointed at her, then at Poison.

*

'Come with me.' the witch said and walked outside. Poison realized that it had stopped raining, the sky clear and blue again, the sun burning down on them as it always did.

They followed the witch for about 20 minutes, none of them speaking, just Sky looking at him with her big blue eyes that showed a mix of worry and anticipation. All he could do was give her a weak smile, hoping it would make them both feel less anxious. Kobra and Jet had stayed behind at the gas station, since the witch had told them what she had to show Sky and Poison was for their eyes only. He had no idea how she was even able to be so sure that they were who she thought they were and how she was leading them to something she couldn't even see. It creeped him out but he was so eager to get answers and he could tell Sky felt the same way although she was still frightened as well. Eventually, they reached a cave and the Phoenix Witch stopped at the entrance.

'I cannot go in there with you. It is meant for you and no one else.' she said and he suddenly felt dubious about this whole thing. What if she was leading them into a trap? What if this was some sort of deception. They didn't even have proof that she was who she said she was. He could feel Sky pulling him towards the cave and she turned around to look at him when he didn't move.

'Follow your heart, child. Not your head.' the witch said and when he saw that there was no doubt in Sky's eyes, he finally gave in and followed her.

The cave was muggy but cool and there was light coming through the ceiling, water dripping down the walls. He pulled out his gun and made sure Sky got behind him, just in case, since she didn't have any weapons on her. Poison noticed how vulnerable she looked in this dress she was still wearing, even though he knew she was capable of defending herself now, after all the training she had had. But he couldn't help but feel protective over her. They moved deeper into the cave, hearing bats flapping their wings above them. It was a beautiful but spooky place.

'Poison look, over there!' Sky whispered all of a sudden and pointed to the right. There was more light coming from this direction so they followed it and soon enough, reached an opening. 'Wow!' she muttered and let go of his hand, running over to the walls.

'Sky wait!' he couldn't help but panic. She stopped but not because of his request. He could tell she had found something when she took a step back and he hurried to join her.

When he realized what she had found, he gasped. In front of them, the wall was covered in paintings. Poison had never seen anything like this before. It was breathtaking. Most of the paintings showed familiar looking animals but also some he had never seen before. Above it, something that looked like the night sky was painted, displaying various constellations and again, some he could identify while others were unknown to him. It was obvious that whoever painted this had a vast knowledge of nature.

'Poison...' he heard Sky say. He hadn't even noticed that she had wandered off to the other side of the wall, so mesmerized by all of this. Again, he followed her but this time, the look on her face seemed concerned. She was pointing at a symbol, also painted on the wall and it took him a few seconds to focus and figure out what it was.

*

It was the shape of their necklaces. The symbol on the wall, painted on there in white, was the same one they were wearing around their necks.

'What the hell?' Poison breathed and stepped closer, reaching out to touch it but Sky grabbed his arm, stopping him.

'Don't! What if something happens if we touch it? Like when we touched each other's pendants?' she said and he dropped his arm again.

This was all such a mindfuck. Something inside her tried to be logical. Find a reasonable explanation for all of this. Maybe they had been wrong all along. Maybe her theory about the necklace just being a common talisman was all there really was to it. What if someone had come across this cave, seen the symbol on the wall and thought 'Wow, this would look awesome on a necklace! Let's make some money!' Maybe they had even sold it at the gas station.
Sky wasn't good at lying to herself though, especially when her heart told her otherwise. The Phoenix Witch had said it. Follow your heart, not your head.

'Are you thinking what I'm thinking?' Poison asked.

'You know I am.' she replied and took his hand.

'But how is this supposed to give us answers?' he sighed and all Sky could do was shrug. 'Maybe we should touch it after all? Let's do it together.' Poison added and she thought about it for a moment. What else could they do? They had to try. And if something happened, at least it would happen to both of them.

Still holding hands, they stepped closer to the wall. Sky was shaking and she could feel he was too. They both took a deep breath and Sky closed her eyes, pressing their palms on the painted symbol in front of her.

But nothing happened. Nothing at all. After a few seconds, Sky opened her eyes again, looking at Poison who was clearly disappointed.

'Don't know what we were expecting.' he said and she felt stupid for even expecting anything at all.

'We should get out of here. It's getting dark.' she replied and let go of his hand, frustrated about not getting any closer to finding what they had been looking for.

The Phoenix Witch was still waiting for them at the entrance which surprised Sky but she was too angry to even look at her.

'Why the hell would you send us in there? To see some cave art? Are you taking the piss?' she yelled at her, ignoring Poison who tried to hold her back. But instead of being offended, the witch just smiled her knowing smile, almost as if to mock her.

'Oh Sky, still the feisty one, I see. You have not changed much. Even as a little girl you would speak your mind, not caring about the consequences.'

*

Poison could tell the comment had hit home. And in all honesty, it did for him too.

'How would you know? I grew up in a pound!' Sky hissed and the witch shook her head, looking directly into Sky's eyes although she couldn't see them.

'I am not talking about the pound. I am talking about what happened to you before then. What happened to you both before then.' Poison could feel the color disappearing from his face, feeling light-headed all of a sudden. Sky looked at him, just as shocked.

'It is not time yet. But you will find out once it is. Now that you are reunited, everything can run its course. It will happen naturally, just like it is meant to be. Just like it is written in the stars.' the Phoenix Witch just said and he swallowed hard.

'Reunited? Does that mean...Sky and I have met before?' he asked, frowning when the witch nodded.

'Not only that, child. You came here together.' she answered.

'Came here from where? Oh don't tell me we're related or something because I might throw up if we are.' Sky's eyes widened and for a brief moment, Poison didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Until he heard the old woman giggle.

'Related? No, child. Not at all. You two are mates.'

'Mates?'

'Soulmates. Companions. Made for each other. Literally. I did not believe it at first but then I saw it. There is nothing as strong as this bond. I am blind but I can see it now just like I saw it the night you came.'

It sounded ridiculous. Poison knew there were a lot of unexplainable things that existed in this world, something he would never understand or believe in. And as much as he wanted to dismiss what the witch was telling them, he knew there was at least some truth to it. There was a bond between Sky and him. It was undeniable. But made for each other? How was that even possible? To create two people for each other? The fact that he could read Sky's thoughts scared him all of a sudden.

'I understand your doubts, children. And believe me, a lot of powerful forces were at play when it happened. But it did happen. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you embrace it, the better. Then you will be ready to remember. And ready to find out what to do next.' she touched Poison's hand, then Sky's and then she turned around. 'I told you everything I was supposed to tell you. Like I said, as long as you stay together, everything will run its course.'

And a moment later, the Phoenix Witch had disappeared.
