Falling Skies

Hot Shot and the Phoenix Witch

Sky had never been kissed before. But that didn't matter. It felt like his lips were made for hers and despite the fact that her heart was beating so fast she thought it would jump out of her chest, it wasn't awkward. It didn't feel weird or like something she would regret afterwards. As she wrapped her arms around his neck and he pulled her body against his, the closeness didn't frighten her. On the contrary, it gave her comfort. His warmth, his scent, his taste, the way his skin felt against hers, it all seemed as though it had been waiting for her. The missing piece of the puzzle hadn't been her necklace, it had been him.

There was no need to talk about it. Even though it was new to both of them, it felt natural and uncomplicated. After all the chaos and the confusion, it was the one thing that made sense. They fell asleep, cuddled up and not afraid about what the next day would bring.

Poison had already gotten up when Sky woke and as she looked at the time she saw that it was almost noon. Wondering what was going on she immediately got up and opened the door, peeking out. The diner was quiet. She put on a pair of shorts and left the room, finding Poison at the counter, his back to her, drinking his coffee.

'Hey...' she whispered and he turned around, looking at her lovingly.

'Hey yourself.' he whispered back and a huge smile flashed over his face.

'You let me sleep in.' Sky walked towards him slowly, smiling back coyly.

'I figured you could use some extra sleep. And the others are out for the day so no training. Unless you want to train with me.' he closed the distance between them and pulled her in a hug, lifting her up slightly.

She hugged him back, nudging his nose with hers. 'I want to train with you...' she replied, sounding more suggestive than she had anticipated. He giggled like a little boy and it made her smile even more. It was the first time she had heard him giggle like that and it was the most endearing sound ever. Another thing that gave her that familiar feeling of comfort and togetherness.

'Alright...shooting practise then.'

'Nooooo.' she complained. It was her least favorite thing because she simply sucked at it. She could think of so many more enjoyable things to do.

He giggled again and let her go, imitating her pouting face.

'Meet you outside in 10!' he said and she couldn't help but sulk. This was gonna go embarrassingly bad.

Poison could tell Sky was not motivated. And truth be told, he would much rather just kiss her again. Spend the whole day kissing her. Go in their room, lock the door and kiss her. Getting up and leaving her had been a torture this morning but as much as he enjoyed being with her, as much as that feeling took a hold of his whole body and soul, he knew it was simply not possible to indulge in it. As much as he felt like they didn't have a care in the world, they did have a lot of them. And he had to make sure she was prepared for it, no matter what. Deep down he knew she wanted to learn, that she was just frustrated and embarrassed and he would have loved to spare her all this unpleasantness but there was just no way around it. Sky had to learn how to shoot, regardless of how good she already was in close combat and with other weapons. These days, it was simply not possible to take the risk.

'Ughh please can we stop, please?! I am SO bad at this, I'm never gonna be able to do this. Just gimme some knives instead. This sucks balls.' Sky whined and let herself fall down on the ground, admitting defeat.

'No we can't. I know you can do it. I know it. You just need to get the hang of it.' Poison sat down next to her and she sighed in frustration.

'PLEASE? Poison, please.' she gave him the puppy eyes and he couldn't help but laugh. How cheeky of her to even try that trick with him.

'Do you really think this is gonna work with me? Come on, you know better.'

'I know. Ugh. You're the boss and you make the rules. And I understand that you can't just make exceptions for me, no matter how many times I kiss you. I wouldn't want you to. But...' she sighed again and started fumbling around with his necklace. That now familiar feeling shot through his body again and he moved closer to her. 'I just wish I was as good as you.'

'First of all: I kissed you. And second, no one is as good as me.' he gave her a sheepish smile at which she rolled her eyes and pushed him away. He knew he got her where he wanted her, slightly annoyed with him and eager to prove him wrong. It was the motivation she needed.

'Yeah yeah yeah. Whatever.'

Sky got up and grabbed the gun again, Poison watching her closely but she gave him the cold shoulder. He could tell she was angry, not so much at him but at herself. Anger was good, though. It had always made him more focused and determined than any other feeling and he was hoping it would do the same for Sky. She took up her position and eyed the ranged cans they used for targets. Then she mumbled a curse before aiming and without further hesitation, she fired, not even pausing between the shots, standing perfectly still. When she lowered her gun again, he was speechless. Sky turned around to him, raising her eyebrows when she saw the stunned look on his face.

'Guess there's a new sheriff in town.' she smirked and Poison stood to walk over to the cans. She had hit all five of them.

*

'HOW? What the FUCK?' Poison yelled, picking up a can. The bullet had hit it right in the middle but she just shrugged her shoulders, pretending to be unimpressed by what she had just done.

'Sky! SKY! You just- how di- SKY! You didn't even try!' he looked at her, waving his arms around, his eyes wide. She smiled at his reaction. He was cute.

Of course she was proud of herself. But seeing just how proud and excited he was, made her feel even better. Poison was right. She didn't try. And maybe that had been the problem all along, maybe she had been trying too hard. Or maybe he had pushed just the right buttons to get her to do it. Or...or maybe something else had happened. Something to do with the necklace. It was a pretty far-fetched theory but last night when he had touched her necklace, a part of him had become a part of her. There was no doubt about it. She could feel it although she couldn't explain it. Maybe, just maybe, the same thing had happened just now when she had held it while wishing she was as good at him. She couldn't even argue about whether it was possible or not because the usual rules didn't apply anymore, not after everything that had happened between him and her in the last month. They both knew it.

Poison picked up the cans and placed them in a row again. He looked at her as though he could read her thoughts and understand them. As if to test her theory because he wanted to know as well.

'Do it again.' he just said and walked over to her.

So again, she shot and again, she hit all five of them without flinching, seemingly effortless, the sound of the gun fire, echoing in the distance. This time she hadn't even bothered to focus her eyes on the targets. She knew they were in front of her and that was all it took, there was something else guiding her.

'That's incredible. Sky, that's crazy.' he ran over, picked one can up and threw it up in the air. She shot and hit it. 'WOOOHOOO!' he screamed and ran back to her, lifting her up and spinning them around. It was making her sick but all she could do was laugh and hold on to him. It had been a very long time since she had felt this carefree.

'But seriously, how's that even possible?' he asked when he let her go again.

'It was you.' Sky just said and she could tell he was trying to wrap his head around it.

'No, it wasn't. It was you. Sky, how could it have been me?'

'You know how. We can't explain it but we know it.' she whispered, brushing his bright red hair out of his face, smiling when she saw how much he enjoyed her gesture.

There was no doubt that they were connected. It was inexplicable just how deeply and how strongly. In that moment they came to a silent agreement that they would make it their mission to find out the answers. And they sealed it with a kiss.

'The others won't like it.' Sky said and Poison shook his head, looking down at the paper. They had constructed a plan and right now, it seemed pretty unrealistic.

'The others won't like what?' they heard a voice behind them. Kobra Kid.

Neither of them had realized it had gotten dark and they had been so caught up that the return of the three other Killjoys took them by surprise. Ghoul and Jet entered the diner and were now trying to make sense of what was going on.

'Sit. It's time we tell you where we were yesterday.' Poison said and waited for them to take their seats.

Ten minutes later, the diner was eerily quiet. Ghoul stared at Sky, making her visibly uncomfortable. Kobra stared at his brother, obviously thinking he had lost his mind and Jet had lit one of Poison's cigarettes which should have surprised everyone, since he never smoked but they all were too preoccupied with their thoughts to really pay attention. Poison had left out the details about the kissing but the change in his voice when he had talked about the feelings as well as Sky's sudden blushing, made it more than evident that something had happened between them. Which again, didn't really seem to surprise anyone, almost as if they had sensed the strong affiliation between them before they could.

'No one even knows where the Phoenix Witch is. Or if she exists. How do you expect to find her?' Kobra asked and it was almost as though he woke everyone from their trance with his question.

Of course he was rightfully doubtful. No one had actual proof that she existed. But that argument was invalid.

'No one knows for sure we exist. But we do.' Ghoul replied and Jet rolled his eyes.

'That's not the same, fuckwit. Of course we exist, people just choose to pretend we don't because we're dangerous. And supporting us is dangerous. You know what happened to Cherri Cola.' he said and Sky shot Poison a questioning look.

'Not now, Jet.' Poison just said and looked down on the paper again. It was not the right time to bring that up and neither did it matter. They had to make a decision and there was no point in delaying it.

'So who goes and who stays?' Kobra asked, trying to accept Poison's plan.

'I'm gonna leave that up to you. Sky and I can go by ourselves. She's trained well enough. Or we all go. Lock the diner, pack up the car and go. But I'm not gonna force anyone so whoever wants to stay behind, can stay behind.'

'Well I'm going. You're my brother and whatever's important to you, is important to me too.' Kobra said and looked at Sky, then back at Poison who nodded.

Jet cleared his throat and grabbed the paper from Poison, skimming it and sighing.

'I'm in.' he simply said and then all eyes were on Ghoul.

'Guys, we can't lock up the diner. What if someone needs us. What if something happens to you? You need someone at base. So...I'm staying.'

And that was it. The decision had been made. They were off to find the Phoenix Witch.
