Not The Usual Kind Of Love
The Not So Great Escape
Gerard lay on the floor, panting. It was only fair that he gave Frank a head start. Let him enjoy his legs whilst they lasted. Gerard would snap his legs in two when he found him and he wouldn't let them heal. Then they'd see how far Frank could get the next time he tried to escape.
He slowly got up, cursing under his breath. He heard the front door slam below him and knew it was time to go.
He paced through the house and into the kitchen, his fingeres wrapping round the closest knife he could find. His hands were shaking and the knife trembled in his fist. He could feel the meds wearing off, Harriet's giggle ringing in his ears.
He stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind him. Frank was nowhere in sight, but it didn't matter.
He'd find him.
"Are you going to kill him?" Harriet whispered in his ear.
He whirled round, jerking away from the small girl in front of him, her bright yellow ripped sundress dripping with blood, her eyes gleaming.
The gash in her head was streaming with blood, coating her pale round face in scarlet, dripping over her stretched lips as she grinned at Gerard.
"No," Gerard whispered. "I won't ever do that."
Her face fell. "He thinks this is a game Gerard, he thinks you're playing hide and seek."
"This has nothing to do with you," Gerard muttered uner his breath. "Go away. You're holding me back, he's getting away."
"I'll count to ten whilst you hide Gerard," she trilled, spinning round, her tattered dress flying round her. "One..."
"Go away!" Gerard yelled at his sister, slashing the knife through the air, but Harriet was already gone.
"Two...better hurry up Gerard," she whispered through the air.
"Leave me alone!" Gerard screamed, turning and running down the road.
The sun was setting above him, the sky filled with hazy orange and pink, the clouds drifting slowly.
Gerard stopped when he saw a small figure ahead of him, moving fast down the hill onto the main road.
Gerard took off after Frank, throwing himself forwards. He ran as fast he could, trying to catch up with the teenager who was slowing down as he reached the main road, limping slightly.
Fuck. There were people here. Cars and pedestrians, all occupying the road. Gerard hid the knife away amongst his clothes, freezing when he saw Frank take off again, pelting down the road. He must have seen Gerard.
"Three."
Gerard gritted his teeth and ran ahead, closing the gap between him and Frank.
Frank, who was falling into the arms of a woman walking past, his sobs audible from where Gerard was stood. Frank clutched her, crying uncontrollably.
"Help me," he sobbed, his body heaving. "Help me, God, please, he's going to kill me, please!"
The woman held Frank back at arms length, studying his face. "You... You're the missing boy from Jersey, aren't you?"
Frank nodded frantically. "Please, you need to call the police, he's going to kill me, he's going to drag me back there and-"
"Sssh, it's ok, I'll call them, just hang on," she soothed him, having no choice but to hold the boy up. He was holding onto her so tightly that his fingers seemed to have locked themselves in place and he couldn't stand, his legs buckling beneath him.
"No! He's right fucking there, look! We have to go!" Frank cried, pointing manically at the dark figure stalking towards them.
"Fuck," she swore uner her breath, fumbling for her phone as she tried to move the boy back with her.
"Four."
"I need the police, I'm in danger, I-"
"Get your hands off of him."
The woman sprawled across the floor as Gerard struck her across the face, sending her flying back onto the ground. Frank screamed as Gerard grabbed him around the forearm, crushing his arm.
"Five...they're coming to get you Gerard."
"SHUT UP!" Gerard screamed.
Frank whimpered, desperately trying to pull away. The phone was buzzing with the voice on the other line, the woman scrambling for her lifeline.
A car slowed down next to them, pulling up. A man got out, his face bewildered and slightly angered.
"What's going on here?" he demanded.
The woman had retrieved her phone, sobbing the situation down the line to the police. Frank gasped as he was spun round, trapped against Gerard's chest with a knife at his throat.
"Stay the fuck away or I'll cut his throat!" Gerard threatened, his eyes huge and wild with fear. "I mean it!"
The guy's jaw dropped and he held his hands up. "Fuck, calm down, it's ok, I won't come any closer, just-"
"Shut up, shut up, shut up!" Gerard screeched, tears streaming down his face. "Stay where you are, I swear to God, I'll slice his neck open!"
"Gerard please," Frank begged, trying to control his tears. "Gerard stop, you don't want to do this!"
"Frankie..." Gerard whimpered, his grip on Frank tightening. "Fuck..."
"Gerard, you love me, you told me you love me," Frank choked out. "Just stop, if you really love me, let me go."
"I can't let you go Frank," he whispered.
"Six."
"Just let him go, it's ok," the man tried to coax him, taking a step forwards slowly.
Frank cried out as the knife pressed down hard on his jugular, the skin breaking and blood starting to well up around the blade. "Gerard!"
"Stop!" the woman shrieked. "Stop, please, just let him go!"
Gerard looked up at the sky, tears streaming down his face. "I love you so much Frank."
The boy was nothing more than a sobbing, trembling mess in his arms, his neck bleeding and his head spinning.
"Let him go, you don't want to do this! The police are coming, you have to let him go!" the woman yelled frantically.
"Tell me you love me Frank," Gerard whispered, not hearing the woman's cries. "That's all that matts to me now. Tell me you love me."
"I... I l-lov-ve you," Frank sobbed.
Gerard closed his eyes and still didn't let Frank go.
"Seven."
More cars were pulling over now, people climbing out of the vehicles to crowd round the two men, their faces the perfect picture of horror. The sun had nearly sunk all the way past the horizon now, nothing more than a glowing orange slither.
"Tell me you're mine," Gerard breathed, burying his face in Frank's hair.
"I-I'm yours," Frank cried, shaking. "Gerard, stop, just-"
"Frank please!" Gerard half screamed, half sobbed, his voice completely broken and desperate. "Just shut up! I can't...can't... Fuck, I need my meds, need my meds so bad, fuck, fuck-"
"Jesus, just let the kid go, please!" someone yelled.
"Eight. Quite the show you're putting on Gerard."
"Gerard," Frank gasped, clawing at the arms that held him tight against Gerard's chest. "Just stop, please! It doesn't have to be this way, we can fix this, just don't do this Gerard!"
"You mean everything to me Frankie," Gerard said softly, his voice thick with tears. "I'll die without you."
"You crazy fuck, let him go! You can't do this!" another voice cried out amongst the crowd.
"GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME," Gerard screamed at the top of his lungs, the knife pressing in deeper to Frank's throat.
The crowd gasped, moving back in a flash, a sea of terrified faces. Gerard sobbed even louder, clutching Frank as tight as possible. "I won't let you go Frank, you're mine, I won't let them have you!"
"Nine."
The faint wail of sirens could be heard in th distances and Gerard choked, uttering the word no again and again under his breath manically, his eyes huge with fear.
The cars appeared round the corner, speeding towards them, the sound deafening. Frank was limp in his arms now, convinced he was going to die.
"No," Gerard whispered.
Harriet's hand breezed across Gerard cheek. "I tried to warn you. But you didn't listen."
"Get away from me! This is all your fault you evil bitch, I'll fucking kill you!" Gerard screamed at the empty space in front of him, the crowd jostling with fear.
The police cars were screeching to a halt, the doors flung open and bodies spilling from the vehicles, guns raised.
"Move!" they yelled, surging through the crowd.
Gerard stared at them, watching as the crowd evaporated and the police encircled him, trapping him.
"Let him go! We have you surrounded!"
"Ten."
It all happened in a blur.
Gerard let out a strangled sob, slashing the knife through the unconscious boy's throat and letting him drop to the ground.
Soon after a bullet tore through his leg, sending him down to the floor, his eyes rolling in his head as he slipped into the darkness of his mind.
The last thing he saw was Harriet stood over him, smiling widely.
"Found you! It's your turn to count now Gerard!"
He slowly got up, cursing under his breath. He heard the front door slam below him and knew it was time to go.
