What Happens in Art Class...

Chapter 13 (G)

Frank was acting really strange in class, and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why. It was Halloween, the highlight of the year for horror movie lovers everywhere. He should have been buzzing with adolescent excitement. Instead, he was fidgeting nervously in his chair all hour. And he wouldn’t look at me, either. I tried to catch his eye multiple times, but he just pretended to be engulfed in his artwork. I say pretended because Frank is never engulfed in his artwork. He hates it too much.

I was beginning to think I did something wrong when I heard the voice of the blood-soaked creature next to Frank speak up, “You trick-or-treating today?”

“Not this year. Eighteenth birthday. Kind of a big deal.”

My head shot up and I stared at him. Of course. How could I have forgotten? Frank was legal…Legal. Oh the things I could now do to that tiny body….With nobody to tell me no…Okay, I needed to stop that thought before it got too out of hand. There was still half an hour left to the day. And now I had completely missed whatever Ryan said to make Frank turn that adorable shade of pink…

He stayed like that for the rest of the hour, chewing absentmindedly on his lip ring, clearly lost in thought. Normally I would have called him out in front of the class and told him to get to work, but he looked embarrassed enough already. Dammit, what did Ryan say to get him flustered like that?!

The bell took forever to ring, but when it did I was slightly relieved. Frank was finally back down to Earth, pretending to work on his project again, and I was ready for him.

I walked up behind him and placed my chin on his head, wrapping my arms around his frame. “Happy birthday beautiful,” I said as smoothly as I could.

He turned around and kissed me, “Thanks. It’s a big one.”

I smirked, “Yeah. Eighteen. You can finally smoke legally.”

“That’s…not the only thing I can do legally…” I didn’t miss the nerves in his voice, and I suddenly understood. He was afraid of my reaction to his legality. Honestly, I didn’t blame him. I was hella kinky when he wasn’t legal, and honestly my mind was going to much worse places knowing that I wouldn’t get in trouble if caught.

I gave him a reassuring smile, “Yeah, but we’re not doing anything you don’t want to do today. This is your day, and what you say goes.” After all, his happiness was most important.

“It does?”

“Of course. You’re eighteen. You do what you want.”

He kissed me passionately, “You’re the best. How about we go to your house and watch movies or something? And then…we can see where the night takes us.”

I raised an eyebrow, “You’re not going to ask permission?”

“I’m eighteen. I do what I want. Besides, she knows I’ll be at “Ryan’s” so…” he said with a laugh. I won’t pretend that it didn’t bother me that his mom thought he was dating that scumbag. Still…She probably wouldn’t be too accepting of me, so it was for the best

“So, what do you usually spend your birthday doing? I mean, you must’ve had something interesting with it being on Halloween.” I said in the car.

Frank shrugged, “Nothing much, really. Mom and I eat cake and if I’m lucky Dad drops in and hands me five bucks. I have a feeling that’s gonna change now that I’m ‘old enough to support myself’ though.”

“What about friends?”

“I didn’t really have any. I’ve always been strange compared to the rest of society…”

I patted his head, “There’s nothing wrong with that. Didn’t your mom at least take you trick-or-treating though?”

I felt his head shake under my hand, “We’re catholic. Mom won’t let me.”

My jaw dropped on that one, “You poor depraved child!”

He chuckled, “I’m not a child anymore.”

“That’s even worse!” I declared, “Now you’re past the acceptable age of trick-or-treaters and you’ll have to wait until you have kids of your own to have the experience.”

“It’s fine. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.”

“Well, I’ll have Mikey bake you a cake when we get home. You’re going to have a great birthday this year.” Okay, so that wasn’t the best offer, but it was the best I had on such short notice. I still couldn’t believe I forgot. I vowed to myself that I would go get him his hoodie right after school the next day.

“Frankie!” Mikey called from the couch when we walked in, “what are you doing here?” He asked as he awkwardly ran over.

“It’s, uh, kinda my birthday.”

He began his surprised head swivel while stuttering out something about going to Ray’s. I grabbed him when he headed for the door, “No, you’re going to get in the kitchen and bake a cake. We’re celebrating like normal people today.”

Mikey looked like he didn’t buy it, but sulked off to the kitchen anyway. In a couple of minutes I heard the clanking of bowls and decided it was time to sit on the couch.

“It’s Halloween,” he said, “How much you wanna bet there are horror films all over the TV?”

“Let’s do it!” Frank said cheerfully. This, however, was the wrong choice of words as it sent poor Mikey into a frenzy.

“What happened to being normal people?!” he yelled from the kitchen.

I locked eyes with Frank and couldn’t hold back my laughter, “Not do it, Mikey!” Frank called back, “We’re watching horror movies!”

And watch them we did. Every single cheesy movie we could find. Frank pretended to be scared and curled up against my side for most of them even though I knew he was faking. Mikey offered the comic relief by jumping every time we said something that could be taken as even slightly suggestive for most of the night. And his cake turned out really good. Finally, when the night was over, I pulled Frank close in my bed and fell asleep. It was the best sleep of my life.

The next day I went out and got that hoodie. Last one in stock, and it just happened to be in Frank’s size.
