Rock And Roll Ruined My Life - Chapter 31 – School?

“Jules! Time to wake up!” I heard a voice yell up the stairs. I sat up and scratched my head. I reached out for my glasses and sloppily put them on. I looked at my clock and then my calendar. It was 7:00 on a Monday morning. ‘I have school today,’ I sighed to myself. I got up and walked downstairs to see Matt, Johnny, Jimmy, Steve, Lindsey, Gerard, Ray, and Mikey sitting in the kitchen. I immediately turned around to go get dressed. I was still in my pajamas and my hair was a mess and I probably had morning breath.

“It’s okay, we’re all still half asleep too,” Lindsey called after me. I turned around and shuffled over to the counter and poured myself a bowl of cereal. It was one of my favorites: Lucky Charms. I hopped up onto the counter and slouched against the cabinets. My legs dangling over the side, not quite long enough to reach the floor.

“We know you don’t have a lot of room here,” I heard Matt address Gerard and Lindsey, “we’re thinking maybe we’ll find a hotel to crash at for the next few weeks until March. Just makes things easier, ya’ know?”
“You guys are welcome to stay as long as you want. We already have Mikey, Ray, Frank, and Bob crashing here for all eternity,” Lindsey smiled. Gerard just nodded in agreement, he, like me, was not a morning person.

“When do you have to be at school?” Jimmy asked me.
“7:45,” I replied before taking another bite of cereal.
“I used to have to get to school by 7:30,” he told me, scratching his chin. I nodded and waited for him to continue talking. “Believe it or not, I was actually a good student…when I went to school, that is,” he laughed. I chuckled; I really had no right to judge Jimmy based on his name and the way he dressed. Besides the spiky dreads, he looked like a normal guy in sweatpants and a t-shirt.

I looked at the clock on the kitchen wall. It was 7:35! I jumped off the counter, threw my unfinished bowl of cereal in the sink, and ran up to my room as fast as I could without falling.

“What the hell?” I heard a few people exclaim.
“She saw what time it was,” Lindsey replied.
“You didn’t tell her it was time to leave?” I heard Jimmy scoff at her. I raced up the steps and down the hall to my room.

I tore open my closet, and picked the first two items of clothing I saw. A pair of blue skinny jeans and a white v-neck; fine with me. I pulled out my bun, re-did it, and then ran into the bathroom to brush my teeth.

I ran back to my room, grabbed my book bag and some socks and ran downstairs to the foyer. I opened the closet to see a humongous pile of shoes that weren’t mine. They were all of the other band’s shoes! I sighed and began to rummage through the pile. I glanced at my phone. It was 7:43. I was going to get detention. I gave up looking for my shoes and pulled on the first pair that looked like they would fit me. I stood up and pulled out a random jacket. I threw it on; it smelled amazing. I had no idea who’s it was, but whatever. I ran back into the kitchen where everyone was still sitting and talking like nothing was going on.

“Hello?! I have to get to school! Someone has to drive me!” Everyone exchanged looks like “You go. No you go!”
“Please! Someone!” I begged. Mikey, Ray, and Johnny stood up in unison. I hurried back to the foyer while they were deciding who would drive me. I saw Mikey jogging down the hallway in his pajamas. Like me, he just grabbed a random pair of shoes and a jacket. I tossed him a random set of keys and opened the door. It was freezing.

We walked down to the end of the pathway and Mikey pressed the unlock button on the car keys. Thankfully, the car that beeped was on the corner. We both jogged over and I strapped myself in before he could start up the car. He put the keys in the ignition and stepped on the gas. The car wouldn’t budge. I brought my hands to my face and sighed. Today was just not a good day. He tried again and still, the car was too cold to budge. It had to heat up before we could do anything.

“I’m gunna’ get detention I know it,” I said as we sat there.
“I know school is important to you and all, but do you think it would be better if you just didn’t go today?” Mikey asked.
“Are you saying you want me to skip school today?”
“No I said I think it would be easier if you didn’t go today.”
“Fine with me!” I said unbuckling my seatbelt and hopping out of the car.

“Is that the Rev’s jacket?” Mikey laughed. I reached into the pocket and pulled out a wallet. I opened it to see an ID with his face on it. I nodded and held out the wallet to show him.
“And your shoes? Who’s Vans are those?” I shrugged and skipped back up to the house.

“Wait before you take it off, show everyone how you left. Please?” He begged me still laughing. I nodded, ran into the kitchen and sat back down at the counter.

“Whoa, that was the fastest day of school in my entire life,” Steve chuckled, sipping his coffee.
“What happened?” Lindsey asked, concern on her face.
“Car wouldn’t start. It’s too cold outside. I guess I can’t go today,” I shrugged. Lindsey gave me that skeptical look that only a mom could give. I felt my confidence cracking as she held my gaze.

“Please?” I begged. She held my gaze, still. “I’m gunna get detention if I show up now,” I added. It felt like forever before I got a response out of her.
“Fine. But you have to get your homework from one of your friends and you have to do it.”
“Yay! Thank you so much!” I ran over and gave her a hug.
“You smell really good! Who’s jacket is that?” she asked.
“Jimmy’s,” I muttered, trying to hide my smile.
“That’s not mine,” Jimmy piped up, a confused look spreading on his face, “but those are my Vans!” He exclaimed.
“I’m wearing your Vans and the Rev’s jacket,” I confessed. Everyone burst out laughing. I couldn’t help but join in.
“I can’t with you,” Lindsey chuckled.
“Hey, I had to get to school,” I shrugged. Once we were done with laughing about my mix-matched outfit, I trotted back to the foyer and hung everything up.

‘What to do now?’ I asked myself. I knew what I wanted to happen, but it was practically impossible. So instead, I settled for a new plan. I walked back into the kitchen.

“Um, guys?” They all faced me.
“I was wondering- well I wanted to know if- but it’s early we don’t have to go now-”
“Spit it out,” Gerard chuckled. He was more awake now that he had his coffee.
“Can someone teach me how to drive?” I blurted, blushing a little.
“I thought Alex, Jack, Rian, and Zack taught you?” Lindsey asked.
“Well, yeah kind of- but still, I want to practice.”
“You should really be practicing guitar if you’re practicing anything, but if you want to go, I say okay,” Lindsey smiled.
“Awesome!”
“Let’s wait until everyone else wakes up though, alright?”
“Okay! Fine with me!” I said practically skipping out of the room and up the steps to my room. I threw myself on my bed and took out my phone.

‘Who to text?’ I asked myself as I scrolled through my contacts lazily. Suddenly, I saw my Dad’s old contact.

I sucked in my breath and hesitated before pressing the delete button. I couldn’t keep it there forever. I continued to scroll until I found my Mom’s. I deleted that one too. I held back my tears and went back up to the A’s. Miraculously, I found Alex’s phone number! I sat up straight and scrolled down to J. Unfortunately, Jack’s number wasn’t there. I scrolled back to the A’s and pulled up a blank text:

- Hey

My phone buzzed almost instantly with a reply.

- heyy whats up?

- Nothing much, just chillin. U? I smiled to myself, talking to any of the guys from All Time Low just made me happy.

- arent u supposed to be in school?

- Aren’t u supposed to be in college? :P I chuckled at my witty reply.

- touché. but seriously, what happened?

- The car Mikey tried to use didn’t work. So I just stayed home since I would have gotten detention anyways…

- nice. so what are u going to do for the rest of the day?

- I’m going to practice my driving skills, what else? xD

- oh geez lol. i wish we were there for that.

- Me too :’( I pouted.

- hey cheer up! we’ll get to see u soon.

- Yeah but that’s Friday. Today is Monday : /

- true true... jack is like beating me up over here because he doesn’t have ur number. can I give it to him?

- Are you serious? You didn’t even need to ask that question LOL I replied, laughing and blushing over the turn this conversation took.

- whoa whoa okay. u should be getting a text from him any minute now. he can’t type fast enough lol

Sure enough, my phone buzzed with a new message. It read:

- hey : )

- Heyy! What’s up? I replied.

I switched back over to my convo with Alex:

- Thanks Alex :D

- np. i’ll ttyl okay? gunna go write down some new ideas.

Okay, bye!

I switched back over to my convo with Jack.

- nothing much, sitting around doing nothing. u?

- Same! Lol. I wish you guys were still here

- me too. why does friday have to be so far away?

- I don’t know, but it sucks LOL

- yeah. so, we didn’t really get to talk too much over the weekend. wanna start over?

I hesitated before replying:

- Sure! Hello, my name is Juliet : )

- hey, i’m jack ; )

- Nice to meet you, Jack. So, what type of music do you listen to?

- i like rock music, what about you?

- I like rock too! What’s your favorite band?

- i dont have a favorite band, but one of my favorites is blink-182. u?

- Omg! I love Blink-182 too! I also like Green Day and My Chemical Romance

- they’re cool, they’re cool. so where are u from?

Once again I hesitated. I got up and ran to the bathroom to get some tissues -just in case, and sat back down.

I’m from NYC; born and raised in Manhattan. You?

i’m from maryland. baltimore to be specific. so, youre a city chick? tell me your favorite pizza place.

I tapped my chin- this was a hard decision! I remembered the place but I couldn’t remember the address… Oh well I’d say a street close to it.

I love Sam’s Pizza by 3rd avenue : ) You’re a Maryland boy, where’s your favorite place to get crab cakes?

definitely koopers tavern. great place. i think we’re pretty much introduced, what about u?

I say we’re good for now : ) So, can you send me the exact address to the place you’re playing at?

i dont have it on me now sorry : ‘( i’ll have alex text it to u though.

Okay, no problem! …. Jack, can I ask for your advice on a situation?

sure thing whats up?

Well, Gerard and Lindsey gave me the option of coming with them on tour for the rest of the school year and I really want to go, but then I’d basically never see you or any of my other friends until next year- literally. What do you think?

thats tough. if it were up to me, i’d go on tour. but your friends understand that u live with famous people, right? if they’re youre real friends, they shouldnt be upset.

I guess you’re right. But we won’t get to hang out : (

dont be like that. u dont know if youll be stopping in the town we’re in or not. i actually think it would be easier for us to hang out if u didnt go to school.

You’re right! Why am I sweating this?-

“Julie!” I heard someone call me from downstairs.

-I’m sorry to cut our convo short but I have to go : ( Thanks for everything!

no problemo and okay : ( bye

I locked my phone and walked downstairs. I saw the Rev, Gerard, Frank, Johnny, and Jimmy standing in the foyer. I guess these were my driving instructors. Good Lord.

“Ready to drive?” the Rev asked throwing his jacket on, a grin on his face. Suddenly, his grin was cut short. He brought the collar of the jacket up to his nose and sniffed it. “Why does my jacket smell like girl?” Gerard, Jimmy, Johnny, and I burst into laughter. Everyone else just looked at each other, not quite getting our inside joke.

“Yes, I’m ready to drive. Anyone mind if I use this?” I asked pulling out a random hoodie from the closet.
“That’s Zack’s, he won’t mind,” Johnny nodded. I pulled it over my head and slipped on another random pair of shoes. The Rev tossed me a set of keys; I guess we were using his car.

I walked outside and pressed the unlock button to find the car. I felt my jaw drop. It was a freakin’ truck! And on top of that, it was pulled into the driveway not backed in! I turned to face them, a look of terror on my face. They all laughed and climbed into the back.

“You said you wanted to drive!” The Rev smiled at me.
“I want to drive a normal car! It was bad enough I had to drive a stalker van the first time!” I retorted in distress. This only made them laugh harder. I sighed and walked around to the driver’s seat.

“You better not scratch up my ride,” the Rev warned me.
“I-I’ll try my best,” I gulped, turning the keys in the ignition.
“Please tell me you know how to put this thing in reverse.”
“I do,” I said stepping on the brake before I switched gears- just in case. I pulled the lever back to “R” and turned around in my seat like I saw everyone else do when they drove. Of course, the Rev was sitting in the middle so that I couldn’t see behind me.

“Get down,” I told him.
“Okay Ms. Bossy-pants,” he replied sliding down in his chair until he became Frank’s height. I rolled my eyes and eased off the brake. Slowly we edged out of the driveway. My knuckles were white, but for someone who barely knew how to drive I think I was doing a good job.

Before I knew it, I was almost all the way out of the driveway but there was a car parked on the opposite sides of the street that was blocking me from backing out all the way. I stepped on the brake and switched gears again. I pulled up and then backed up again. Finally I was all straightened out. I turned around in my seat and drove up to the stop sign, where I stopped to take a deep breath.

A round of applause came from the guys in the back and I laughed nervously.

“Dude, how did you do that?”
“You didn’t have to do that!”
“We were only joking!”
“We were going to switch cars!”

I turned around sharply.

“You mean to tell me that you guys didn’t want me to back it out?”
“Well, no,” they all muttered in unison.
“I almost had a freaking heart attack! You’re all jerks…” I muttered turning back around and driving up to the main boulevard.

I drove us to the plaza I went to with the guys when I wanted orange juice, and parked the car. There was a little pizza place there. I cut the engine and hopped out; the guys followed suit.

“You did good for a person who’s “never driven before”,” Johnny said giving me a high five.
“Thanks,” I smiled.

“Did you see what happened to her?” I heard the Rev ask Jimmy.
“What?”
“She got all pissed off back there. All women do that! They get pissed at guys when they’re driving!”
“If I were a new driver and all of us were sitting back there, I probably would have cursed us out five times already.”

“Ha! Same here, man…Hey Julie!” the Rev called out to me.
“Yes?” I replied turning around and walking backwards.
“Where are we going?”
“The pizzeria of course!”
“Awesome and how are you walking backwards like that?”
“I don’t know, I guess I inherited it,” I said stepping up over the sidewalk that connected all of the stores. That was the first time I ever hinted a reference to my parents since the accident. However, I did not well up with tears. I guess I was getting over them slowly. I saw Gerard and Frank look at each other, noticing what I said; I didn’t meet their gaze.

“Stop it! It’s freaking me out. It’s like you have eyes in the back of your head,” the Rev said.
“Maybe I do,” I laughed then turned to face forward.

“It’s a good thing we came to the pizzeria, I’m starving!” Jimmy exclaimed. He had been awfully quiet, but I don’t blame him. I wouldn’t talk to anyone either if I wasn’t close to MCR or Avenged. The small talk continued as we made our way down the concrete.

“You know, I always feel like driving ruins a kid’s innocence. Like once you drive it’s official, you’re an adult who has to face reality. Thankfully, that never happened to me,” the Rev continued talking.
“Yeah, you’re as pure as a hooker,” Frank snorted. We all burst out in laughter as Jimmy’s face flushed in anger. He ran up and stood in front of Frank, ready to argue. The height difference was killing us, and we continued to roar.

“You’re a little bastard,” Jimmy said in a sort of serous tone.
“At least I’m not a big one like you!” Frank retorted then stomped on his foot. The chase was on.

Frank tore across the parking lot- I didn’t know he could run that fast! The Rev was right behind him, his long legs making up for his lack of speed. It was like a lion chasing a Zebra, it was like a wolf chasing a rabbit, it was like a cheetah and a deer, it was just flat out hysterical.

Suddenly, Frank made a sharp right and ran under the entrance sign, car horns blaring at his dangerous moves. The Rev, who was not nearly as short or flexible, almost ran into the sign. To top it all off Frank slid over the hood of another car before planting himself in his original spot next to Gerard. The Rev caught up and was completely out of breath.

“Just-gasp-you-gasp-wait!” by now both of them were clutching their sides and practically coughing up their lungs. I frowned; they were both smokers they shouldn’t be running around like that.

“Let’s go inside,” I said, opening the door to the pizzeria. It was extremely hot inside so Frank and the Rev didn’t come in. I went up and ordered three pepperoni pies and handed my money to the cashier.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” I heard Gerard say, stepping forward, “I’m paying. You could give her back her money.” The cashier rolled her eyes and started giving me back my 20s. I held up a hand in protest and she hesitated.

“It was my idea,” I told Gerard.
“But I want to pay for it,” he replied taking my money and handing it back to me. I sighed and put it back in my pocket.
“Thanks, dad,” I whispered the last word to myself. I sat down and waited at a random table.

The rest of the guys sat down around me and I saw the cashier girl giving me weird looks. I guess it was kind of strange, seeing a teenager with a bunch of rocker guys. They probably thought I was their whore or kid or something. I began laughing to myself just imagining me trying to be a whore and failing epically. Johnny and Jimmy gave me questioning looks, but I just shook my head; it was definitely not appropriate to tell them.

Gerard sat down across from me next to Jimmy and Johnny and tapped the front window. Frank and the Rev looked up, each with a cigarette in hand. Gerard motioned for them to come inside and they both nodded and stood up for one last drag.

I scooched over for them when they got to our table and Frank got in first; I relaxed a little. It’s not that I didn’t like the Rev, but I didn’t exactly know him so I was still not comfortable just lounging around with him next to me. I didn’t think he’d do anything but still, I knew Frank better.

We talked for a while and when the cashier put three boxes on the counter we all stood up and walked over. We weren’t going to eat here; there were people to feed at home. We trekked back to the car and I, of course, was driving. I climbed up to the front and yelled at everyone to put on their seatbelts. Gerard was riding shotgun this time.

I checked my mirrors and slowly pulled out from my spot. We made it home safe and sound and when I pulled into the driveway everyone gave me another round of applause. I smiled and after I tossed the keys to the Rev, ran straight to the front door. I wanted to run and tell everyone about my success.

I burst into the kitchen and saw that the rest of the house had awakened. I found Mikey, Lindsey, Ray, Steve, Zack, and Kitty all in the living room with Bandit, whom I had not seen in days!

“Bandit!” I squealed.
“Auntie Julie!” she clapped and wriggled out of Lindsey’s arms to wobble over to me.
“I haven’t seen you in so long! Where were you?” I asked more to Lindsey than the rest of the house.
“At her Aunt Bailey’s house on the shore,” Lindsey smiled. I gave her a confused look.
“An aunt on my side of the family. She hadn’t seen her in a while so I figured let her spend time with her. She’s really young and loves kids and she’s coming with us on tour to help look after her,” she explained further. I nodded and went back to playing with Bandit.

The rest of the day was just spent eating pizza and talking about music. Little did I know what was being planned for me behind the scenes…
