Rock And Roll Ruined My Life - Chapter 26 – Picking Fights and VIPs

When we got back to the house we found it silent, a rare occurrence. Ray dropped the keys on the mirror. The sound made us both jump. From somewhere in the distance I herd someone moan in pain. Ray kicked off his converses and I took off my boots, trying not to get snow everywhere but failing epically.

I tiptoed into the living room to see Frank sitting on the floor with his head between his knees. I continued on to the dining room to find Lindsey sitting there all by herself. She looked out of it, so I decided on just waving to her. She tried to talk but stopped and instead greeted me by smiling somewhat. I continued into the kitchen to see Mikey hugging the refrigerator and Bob passed out over the counter. I suppressed a laugh and met up with Ray in the foyer again.

“Was it really that bad last night?” I asked him. He laughed and nodded.
“Lindsey and Bob split the rum and Mikey and Frank had about ten different kinds of shots.” I gaped, unable to wrap my mind around how much pain they must be feeling. Surprisingly, I hadn’t been to a party where there was underage drinking yet. As I wondered what it was like Ray’s voice interrupted me.

“Have you seen Gerard or Bandit?”
“No!” I exclaimed earning another round of groans from Frank and Lindsey.
“They’re probably upstairs.”
“I’ll go check on them while you order pizza,” I instructed.
“Yes ma’am,” Ray replied while saluting me military style. I chuckled and ran upstairs.

I hesitated when I got onto the landing. I didn’t want to walk into Gerard and Lindsey’s bedroom. I had actually never been in there before. But if I wanted to find Gerard or Bandit I had to check every room. I turned the door knob and pushed the door open, not letting go of the handle just in case Gerard was sleeping or…something…

To my relief and dismay no one was there. I moved on to the next room, the Bandit’s room. Maybe Bandit was taking a nap? I opened the door and there was no one. I checked my room just in case, and no one. Finally the last room was the playroom. It was there I found Gerard and Bandit drawing pictures and coloring. It seemed like the most obvious place now but hey, it never hurts to check.

“Hey guys!” I half whispered.
“Hey Jules!” Gerard smiled.
“Dwulie!” Bandit got up and hugged my legs. I picked her up and gave Gerard a what-the-heck-happened-to-everyone look. He returned it with an I’ll-explain-later look.

“Ray’s ordering pizza for dinner,” I told him.
“That’s good. I don’t think anyone’s up to cook right now.”
“Yeah. And even if I wanted to cook I’d probably just set the house on fire so pizza was the best option.”
“You could’ve gotten Japanese,” he pointed out.
“Well if you want it you can order it, but I told Ray pizza.”
“Okay.”
“Let’s go downstairs and give everyone some orange juice,” I said walking towards the door.
“Orange juice?” Gerard asked following behind me.
“Yeah I heard Alex from All Time Low say that Orange Juice was the best hangover remedy.”
“Hm,” Gerard said thoughtfully, “okay, let’s try it!”

We went downstairs, and, after prying Mikey off the refrigerator, gave everyone a glass of OJ. It seemed to work pretty well!

“I’ll have to thank Alex for that one,” Gerard smiled as the four of us sober ones drank some too.
“You know Alex?” I said suddenly standing up straight.
“Yeah we know Alex, and Jack, and-”
“Oh my God that’s so awesome! All Time Low is amazing,” I gushed.

Gerard raised his eyebrows at Ray giving him a you-thinking-what-I’m-thinking look? I blushed and decided to take Bandit back up to the playroom. I did NOT need them teasing me about my crushes on Alex and Jack. I set bandit down by the coloring table and took out a piece of paper for myself. I was trying to sketch Bandit drawing her own little picture when my phone rang. It was a text message from Tom. I could barely open the text fast enough. It read:

-hey. want to get pizza with me billie and juliana?

I smiled and was about to reply ‘yes’ when I remembered Ray had just ordered pizza for all of us. I frowned and replied:

-I can’t : ( Ray literally just ordered pizza for all of us.

Randomly, the doorbell rang. Bandit just kept on coloring and I figured it was the pizza guy so I ignored it too. I picked up my paper and continued drawing.

“Jules!” I heard my name being called.
“Shut up Gerard!” I heard Frank yell back. I picked up Bandit and walked downstairs.

“Go drink you’re orange juice,” I heard Gerard reply to Frank.

“This guy says he’s here to pick you up,” Ray said pointing at Tom who was nervously standing in the foyer. “Do you know him?”

I laughed, “Yeah it’s one of my friends. He lives next to Billie.”

“Why is he here? It’s a school night,” Gerard asked sounding much stricter than he really is.
“He wanted to take me out to get pizza with Billie and his girlfriend.”
“We just ordered pizza,” Ray pointed out.
“I know but I told him-”

“Will you guys just let her GO?!” Frank yelled clutching his head.

I felt my mouth fall open. Frank was really angry.

“If it means you all shut up just let her go!” he screamed again.

Gerard sighed and pinched his nose.

“Give me her,” he said pointing to Bandit. I passed her over and walked over to Tom.

“I’ll be back soon,” I said grabbing my keys and ushering Tom outside. I shivered and ran to Billie’s car.

I fumbled with the handle and shut the door abruptly, not waiting for Tom to catch up.

“Hey Jules!” Billie said smiling at me through the rear view mirror. I waved a cold hand at him, teeth chattering.

“Oh, you’re cold?” Juliana frowned, “Let’s stop at your house to get her a jacket.”
Billie nodded as Tom stepped into the car.

“I’m really sorry about Frank. He’s usually not like that. He’s just hung-over,” I chattered.
“It’s alright,” he smiled.
“Thanks for understanding,” I smiled back. Tom saw me shivering and opened his jacket and patted the empty space next to him. I quickly moved over and huddled close to him. I saw Billie and Juliana give him thumbs up from the corner of my eye. I smiled quietly to myself.

Billie pulled into a driveway that was connected to a short brick town-house. It looked a little worse for wear but other than that it had the potential to look quaint. Billie ran inside and was back two minutes later with a big NorthFace jacket. I reluctantly pulled it on and moved back over to my original spot.

We pulled into the pizza parking lot and ran inside. The smell of pizza made me hungry instantly. I sat down and waited for the waitress to come and collect our orders.

Once we had everything we were completely silent, the food was so good none of us came up for air until we cleaned our plates clear of every crumb.

“That was really good! Thank you so much for letting me hang out with you guys!” I smiled.
“It’s no problem!” Juliana said smiling back.
“Yeah we love hanging out with you!” Billie smiled.

I looked at my phone; it was 7:30. I sighed,
“Guys, I better get home before eight. Gerard will have a cow.”

“Alright let’s go!” Billie said standing up. Everyone followed suit. Billie walked over to the counter and I followed taking out my wallet.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” Billie said holding up his hand. I backed up but realized that he wanted to pay for everyone.
“Billie, I am paying for my own food!” I retorted threateningly.
“No.”
“Yes!”
“No!”
“I have to be home by eight o’clock! Let me pay for my food!”
“Well, if you want to get home so fast let me just get it over with!”
“No!” I pushed past him and paid for my two slices and drink before he could object.

I made sure to flash him my most dazzling smile before rushing over to Tom and Juliana who were standing on the side lines.

“You- you- argh! I can’t call you a bitch!” Billie said as we were walking to the car.
“That’s good! ‘Cause if you did then Gerard and the guys would be on your back,” I teased. He shook his head again and started driving.

*Fast-forward to end of car ride

I pulled off the NorthFace Billie lent me, thanked everyone again and made a mad dash to the front door.

I fumbled with my keys and as soon as I waved that I was in, Billie, Tom, and Juliana were off.

I closed the door and heard an eerie silence. I had forgotten that large amounts of alcohol were consumed not too long ago.

I heard conversation going on in the dining room but headed upstairs. I was really tired and I still had math homework to do. I sighed and opened my door.

Before checking and securing all of my windows, I changed into my pajamas and dragged my book bag to my bed. I looked at the assignment; it wasn’t that bad but it was Trigonometry, which meant that I still had to put energy forth to think.

As I was scratching my pencil away at the first problem there was a knock on my door.

“Come in!” I responded automatically. As the door opened I didn’t bother to look up.
“How was dinner?” I looked up to see Lindsey standing there smiling at me. I smiled back,
“It was good! We just hung out you know? Ate a few slices and drove back.”
“Thanks for coming home before eight.”
“No problem! Gerard seemed like… I don’t even know how to say it…”
“Fatherly? Paternal?”
“Yeah,” I laughed.
“Well it’s good you know how to understand parent terminology.”
“I guess so,” I smiled.

“What cha’ doin’?” she asked leaning over a little to see my math homework.
“Trig.”
“Oh I can’t really help you there, sorry,” she said shaking her head.
“That’s okay, I can manage for now!”
“That’s good… What’s this?” she asked holding up a magazine with All Time Low on it. I blushed and replied,
“Oh that’s nothing. Just a magazine I found at the store.”
“Mhm,” she said flicking through it. Though I couldn’t see her face I knew she was smiling.

“Lindsey, please don’t think I don’t like you or Gerard’s bands anymore! I just- I mean-”
“It’s fine! Really, nothing’s wrong with you liking another band!” I sighed in relief,
“Thank you SO much for understanding!” I replied.
“Yeah I totally get it! Um, I just thought I'd let you know..." I waited for her to say something about how obvious it was that I loved All Time Low. But instead she threw her hand up,
"The guys are going to do an impromptu concert! They are going to have it in your school gym! How exciting is that?”

I gaped at her.
“No way!”
“Way!”
“I can’t believe it!”
“I know!”
“Oh my God!”
“I know!”

By now we were both jumping up and down like fangirls.

“Are you going to play bass at all?” I asked.
“I could probably take over Mikey’s position for one song!”
“Awesome!”
“I know! But enough about us band members! We want you to pick a few friends to hang out back stage with for the concert!”
“I know exactly who I’m taking!” I smiled.

*Next Day

The gabbed my books and sat down just as the bell for homeroom was ringing. The morning announcements came on and we said the pledge and then we had five minutes to converse and get our things together. I took out my phone, typed:

-Hey guys! MCR is having a concert here in our school gym! I want you guys to all be backstage with me! Let me know if you’re interested.

And sent the message to Kat, Billie, Tom, Juliana, and Lizzy.

Almost immediately Kat turned around and gaped at me. I gave her a “thumbs up?” sign and she shook her head “Yes” a million times.

-Sounds awesome! what day is it?

I got back from Lizzy. I stopped to think back to the conversation with Lindsey yesterday and realized she hadn’t told me.

-Ummm good question. I’ll have to ask but I’m assuming it’s gunna be on Friday.

I wrote back.

Billie, Juliana, and Tom didn’t reply yet. They must be busy talking away. The bell rang again and then I was off to Trig, where a really long, boring lesson was surely awaiting me…

*Lunch

“Oh my GOD!” Kat yelled as she ran up to me in front of the cafeteria. I laughed and smiled,
“Yeah!”
“Yo!” I heard from behind. It was Billie, Juliana, and Tom. I smiled,
“Are you guys interested?”
“Yeah! We’re in!”
“Count me in too!” Lizzy said, coming out of nowhere.
“Okay but seriously, you can’t tell anyone else! Let everyone else figure it out on their own and decide if they want to come or not they will. You really have to promise me this,” I added looking all of them in the eye seriously.

“Promise.”
“Promise.”
“PROMISE!”
“Cross my heart and hope to die!”
“Promise,” Tom smiled at me.

I clasped my hands together in excitement.
“Let’s go eat lunch!”

“WOOHOO!” Billie yelled running into the middle of the lunch room. Everyone in the cafeteria joined in and started clapping and cheering, not even knowing what they were clapping for. Once everything died down we walked in and were ignored, just how we liked it.

*

“So when is the concert gunna’ be?” I asked Gerard.
“Friday!”
“Awesome I knew it!”
“Go ahead, text your friends.”
“I am,” I replied already sending the message to all five of them.
“Wow that was fast.”
“Unlike this week,” I replied. It was only Wednesday and I felt tortured. The taste of a concert was right there, just out of reach and it was killing me inside…

“Jules are you even listening?” I heard a voice say. I looked up to see Frank standing there.
“Oh hey Frank!” I smiled leaning over the kitchen counter and hugging him. As I was pulling away he caught the earphone that was in my ear and yanked it out.
“Hey!” I said trying to snatch it back. He backed away and put it up to his ear.

“Who is this?” I felt the blood rush to my face.
“All Time Low…”
“You like their music?”
“Yeah…” I hesitated.
“That’s cool! You should try playing one of their songs if you like them so much.”
“I’ve been trying, but I can’t seem to get the strumming,” I replied sheepishly.
“Seriously? You’re like the most awesomest guitar player!” I smiled,
“Thanks, Frank, but I’m not. My friend Billie is.”
“So why don’t you ask him for help?”
“He’s always busy.”
“What about that guy I yelled at the other day?”
“Tom?”
“Yeah does he play an instrument?” I pretended to rack my brain for the answer, when really I knew it by heart.
“Umm I think he does guitar and drums.”
“Perfect! Ask him!”
“-Or you could just ask Alex and Jack themselves,” Gerard interrupted holing up a ticket. I leaned in closer to see the writing- I need stronger glasses. Read the print and staggered back.

“HOLY FUCK!” I yelled in excitement. I gasped and covered my mouth quickly but it was too late. They heard me. The neighbors probably heard me.

I looked from Gerard to Frank. Their faces were set like stone. They’ve never heard me curse before… Well, at least I don’t think they have…

Suddenly, Frank and Gerard looked at each other and burst out laughing and gave each other high-fives. I sighed in relief and went back to jumping up and down and screaming.

“You thought you were dead!” Frank giggled.
“Shut up!” I retorted smacking his arm playfully. “You would be excited too if you got a backstage pass to an All Time Low concert!”
“Yeah, I guess so,” he laughed.

Gerard pulled me into a hug and everyone joined in. Literally, everyone (Lindsey, Mikey, Ray, Bob, Bandit) just, like, came out of nowhere and gave me a hug, I smiled.

“Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!”

“You’re welcome, welcome, welcome!” they all replied.

“How did you guys do this?” I asked.
“We just Direct Messaged Alex and the guys and they said it was cool if we all came to their next concert in New Jersey,” Mikey replied.
“Oh my God you guys!” I squealed.
“We love ya’!” Lindsey said.
“I love you guys too! Thank you so much! I really can’t express in words how excited and happy I am!”
“Don’t! We know you’re a good egg,” Bob said messing up my hair. I laughed and ran upstairs and pinned the ticket on the wall across from my bed. I would wake up to that ticket every day until next Saturday. Not only did it keep me super excited, it kept me inspired to get through this week and the next week with out complaining!

*Fast Forward to this Friday

“You guys ready?!” I screamed at the guys who were almost ready to go out on stage.
“Hell yeah!” they screamed back. I laughed and walked over to the side of the stage, the place was almost at full capacity now. The place was practically empty when we walked in!

“You guys have a big crowd!” I told them.
“That’s probably because it’s free,” Ray said.
“Or that they though there was gunna’ be free food…” Gerard added. I laughed and went back to find my group. Surprisingly, our school stage/gym was humongous and the back of the stage was pretty big as well.

I found Billie, Juliana, Lizzy, and Tom at the snack bar, muching away on carrots and chips.

“You guys!” I laughed, thinking about what Gerard had just mentioned.
“Wahfs uf?” Billie replied, nearly spitting chip on me.
“Okay, ew, and the show is about to start! C’mon!” I waved them over to the side of the stage.

The curtains were still closed and the guys were getting into their spots. Lindsey came up behind us.
“You guys ready to rock out?”

Juliana gasped, “You’re Lindsey! F-from Mindless Self Indulgence! I love your band!”
Lindsey smiled and hugged her, “Really? Aw thanks hun!”
Juliana was still in shock when the first song started, but by the time it was over the guys were on a roll and we were all jamming out. When “Disenchanted” started playing I found myself standing next to Tom, who smiled at me. I leaned my head on his shoulder and I could have swore I heard Lindsey say,
“Aw look at those two!”

But I didn’t care if the whole world was watching, I was completely content with everything in my life right now. Let the good times roll.
