To The End
Chapter 6
The group was standing now, all except Victoria with her leg wrapped, and Phil, who lounged in the sand a little away from the rest. They stared at us, half looking scared, half hopeful.
"What is it!" Ray called, as soon as we were near. In the distance, we could see Charlotte and Frank pelting along the sand towards us.
"We found it!" Gerard yelled. We reached the circle on the beach, bent over, panting, and moments later, Frank and Charlotte were beside us, panting as well. "About a hundred feet past the plane, fresh water!" Gerard panted.
"This is definitely an island, by the way," Frank added. "We made it clear to the opposite side."
"Is it a mountain spring?" Charlotte asked.
"I think so," I replied.
"We wondered if we could move the plane. If we could roll it? It would make a good shelter," Gerard added.
"If we had some rope, we could try it," Bob suggested.
"Except for the jet fuel," I replied. "We need to make sure it's not gonna blow up at any second."
"Well," said Mikey, "let's go check it out." Everyone except Victoria, and Zara, who stayed with her, began to move towards the plane, Phil had now decided to see what we were up to. When we got to the cabin, Bob cautiously peeked his head in.
"Where did they all go?" he asked in a whisper.
"Who?" asked Frank.
"The, you know. The bodies," Bob said softly, causing Ray, Mikey, Phil, Charlotte, and Amanda to poke their heads inside too.
"Angel and I buried them. Last night, while you were passed out," Gerard said softly.
"Hey! I helped too!" Frank cried.
"Frank helped," Gerard added. They were all looking at us, looking somewhat horrified. "Ok, so everyone look around, see if you can find any sort of opening under the plane." Everyone split up, except Gerard and I. We had an unspoken pact, we were sticking together, with the key hidden in my locket. After a few minutes, we heard Mikey yell.
"I think I've found one!" We raced around the cabin, grouping around Mikey. It was indeed a hatch, possibly a baggage compartment, but the door was half buried in sand. Gerard, Bob, Ray, Frank, and Mikey began to pull it down. To my immense irritation, Phil stood with the girls, watching. They managed to get it open about a foot or so.
"We can't fit inside, and I don't think we're gonna get it open any more," Bob said.
"I can fit," Frank said.
"You can't go in there alone," Mikey told him.
"If he can fit, I can," I said. Frank and I looked at each other, making up our minds. "Someone look inside and see if you can find a flashlight." Charlotte turned on her heel, and I soon heard her footsteps in the cabin. A moment later she reappeared, flashlight and fire extinguisher in hand. She handed them to me.
"Just in case," she said, as she handed me the extinguisher. I nodded, and turned to Gerard. Our eyes met.
"Don't go in, Angel. Let me try," he said. I shook my head.
"You'll never fit. Frank and I are the smallest, and we've already made up our minds." I slowly took the locket off, my eyes locked with his. "If anything happens, give this to my parents, ok?" He nodded slowly, and put it around his own neck, as Bob and Ray began to help Frank into the opening. I walked over to them, and stood on tip toe, handing the flashlight and fire extinguisher through the opening to Frank.
"You ready?" Ray asked, and I nodded shortly. Bob and Ray took my arms, and helped me slide down through the opening. When my feet finally landed on the ground, I stuck my head back through the opening.
"Hey guys, if you hear us yell," I said, "run."
"You don't need to tell us twice!" Ray replied. I pulled my head back inside, and Frank handed me the flashlight. Our eyes met again, and he took my free hand.
"Let's roll," he said. We began to make our way through the belly of the plane, hand in hand, looking for any sign of fuel. Luggage was everywhere, secured against the walls by cargo nets.Broken electrical wires ran overhead. "Do you see anything that looks like a gas line?"
"No," I replied. "Do you smell anything?" We both stood there for a moment, sniffing loudly. I could smell no tell tale signs of gas or oil, just stagnant air.
"No," he replied. "I think it might be alright!" We eventually came face to face with a wall of sand.
"Other way?" I asked.
"You got it," he replied, and we made our way back to the opening through which we had entered, and went past it, towards the front, where we reached another wall of sand. "Looks clear."
"I think your right," I replied. "Should we take down those electrical wires? Just in case? I mean, they don't look like they're attached to anything, but you never know."
"Yeah," Frank said, and handed me the extinguisher. "I'll pull 'em down, if they like, light up or anything, put me out, ok?" I laughed.
"You got it." I held the flashlight on the wires as Frank began to pull them down. After several minutes, he had a coil of wire in his hand, and better yet, nothing had happened.
"I think we're good to go," he said.
"You know what, we should probably throw the luggage outside. It'll make it lighter for one thing, and for another, there may be something inside one of those bags that we can use," I said.
"Good thinking, let's go tell the guys," he replied, and we made our way back to the entrance. "Here, I'll lift you up, and you can tell them." I nodded, and he stuck the wire in his mouth, put his arms around my waist, lifting me up about a foot or so, making it easy for me to stick my upper body out of the plane.
"Hey guys," I called. "No fuel! Hey, give me those wires Frank." He released his bite on them, and I threw them out of the plane. "In case we need rope or something, but I bet it's not very strong." Gerard, Bob, Ray, Mikey, and Charlotte were there now, talking to me from below.
"Everything is ok in there, right?" Gerard asked.
"Yeah, it's fine. Very luggage-y, but fine. We thought we'd start throwing the bags out to you, get it empty in here for one, and for another, we may be able to use whats in them," I replied.
"Good thinking, you start throwing them out, and we'll stack them by the tree line," Gerard said.
"Deal," I replied. "Ok, Frank, you can let me down." As soon as my feet hit the ground, Frank and I began throwing luggage out of the compartment, and I could hear everyone outside lugging them away. Suddenly, Frank gasped, and ran to the opening.
"Ray! Our guitars and Mikey's bass survived!" he yelled.
"Are you kidding me!" I heard Ray reply excitedly. "Pass them down, gently!"
Frank carefully lowered the them down one at a time to Ray, then returned to work. It took us perhaps an hour, but we soon had the entire belly of the plane empty. "Now, how do we get out of here?"
"Ladies first," Frank said, laughing.
"Ok. You guys ready? I'm coming out!" I called.
"Yeah, we gotcha!" I heard Gerard call back. Frank linked his hands together, and I put my foot in his hands.
"Ok, one, two, three," Frank said, and on three, he hoisted me up. I managed to get my waist over the hatch door, my upper body coming out into the blinding sunlight. Bob and Gerard were waiting, catching me under the arms and pulling me onto the sand. Gerard pulled off my locket, and placed it back over my head. "Ready guys?" I heard Frank from inside. "I'm coming out!" I sat on the sand and watched, as Frank's upper body suddenly appeared through the hatch, and he was pulled out by Bob and Gerard.
"Where is everyone?" I asked.
"Emptying out the cabin," Gerard replied as he closed the hatch. "They're piling up everything that's not bolted down, so we can get started trying to move this thing." I nodded, but didn't reply, my head was swimming a little and my vision seemed to be swimming. I could barely keep my eyes open.
"We were standing up down there, Gee, so I think it might be buried kind of deep, we may not be able to move it," Frank said gently.
"Yeah, I could tell.I've been thinking about that, while you were down there. I'm thinking if we dig it out, and use one of the rubber chutes, and then kind of roll it onto the chute, maybe we can get some leverage. We don't really need to move it far, just far enough that it can't flood," Gerard replied. Gerard's remark was the last thing I heard. Lack of sleep and the events of the previous day were beginning to catch up with me at this point, and I couldn't fight it anymore. I fell asleep.
"What is it!" Ray called, as soon as we were near. In the distance, we could see Charlotte and Frank pelting along the sand towards us.
