To The End

Chapter 14

What seemed like seconds later, I awoke. My head was resting on Gerard's shoulder, his arm around me, and a strange shaking sensation was rumbling through the bed.

"Guys! Angel! Gerard! Wake up!" It was Zara's voice, and I opened my eyes, she was shaking Gerard's other shoulder. I was wide awake in a second.

"What is it?" I demanded, sitting bolt upright in bed. My movement awoke Gerard.

"What's going on?" he mumbled sleepily.

"It's Amanda, she went out to throw some more wood on the bonfire, but she hasn't come back, and it's been almost an hour," Zara whispered.

"Did you go check?" I asked.

"I looked out the door, but I can't see her. To be honest, I'm scared to go down there alone." She was wringing her hands, and she did look very frightened.

"What's going on over there? If you're gonna fuck, have the decency to leave the cabin!" Came Frank's voice from across the aisle.

"Oh God, please, I don't wanna listen to that!" I heard Ray mutter beside us.

"Guys! Hush up!" came Charlotte from beside Frank and Bob.

"Quiet!" Gerard yelled, sitting up now, and pulling his tee shirt from the floor on over his head. "Amanda went out, and hasn't come back. We've got to go looking for her. She might be hurt." With those words, Zara darted out into the aisle, I sprang out of bed, and into the overhead compartment, finding the zip lock bag containing my dirt covered, bloodstained shorts and tee shirt, my scrubs, and my stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. Without bothering to check if anyone was watching, I peeled off my dress in the aisle, and pulled on the blood stained clothes. By the time everyone else had dressed, Zara and I were in the first aid area, both wearing bloody clothing, and routing through the supplies, taking what we could carry.

"I'm gonna stay with Tori," Bob said, "she's scared." Gerard nodded to him, and soon the rest of us were climbing down the ladder.

"Where should we start looking?" Charlotte whispered, I noticed she was stuck as close to Frank as she could get.

"Well, she was heading to the bonfire, I guess we should start there," Gerard said, pointing with his flashlight in that direction. We headed across the stream, and towards the fire, and I half expected to see Amanda sitting there, surprised at our arrival. But there was no one there, just the fire burning brightly on the beach. "Let's look around, see if there's any sign that she was here, footprints or something." Gerard put his arm around my shoulder as he said it, and kept me beside him as he walked, shining his flashlight this way and that, and when we got near the water, he began scanning the beam of light across the waves. I had that same bad feeling, in my chest and in my stomach, that I had had just before the plane went down. It was all I could do not to heave up all the banana and coconut I had eaten.

"Guys?" I heard Ray call out in the night. "Come look at this." Gerard led me back in the direction of Ray's voice, and a moment later, we were staring down at the sand in Ray's flashlight beam. A message had been scrawled into the sand.

I'll get in one way or another. This way was fun.

A shiver went down my spine as I read the words, and my eyes met Gerard's.

"Oh God," I said. "Phil."

"Amanda!" Gerard began to yell, and then the rest of us were calling her name, flashlight beams flying across the sand. Ray, Mikey and Zara were now scouring the tree line heading towards the cabin, Charlotte, Gerard, Frank, and I heading in the opposite direction. Suddenly, Charlotte screamed.

At first, all I could see was a pale, thin foot sticking out from the tree line, but as the flashlight beams all hit, I could see that it was Amanda. Her eyes were wide and staring, black bruises ran around her neck, and she had very obviously been raped.

Zara, Mikey, and Ray were pelting up the beach towards us, and even though I KNEW she was dead, I automatically began CPR. Zara gasped as she reached us, but immediately dropped to her knees, straddling Amanda's chest, and began to work with me. I grabbed a knife out of the first aid kit.

"Airway's crushed," I said, and with amazingly steady hands, began to cut into Amanda's throat, below the bruising, as Zara ripped the hose off of one of the airline oxygen masks. Once my small hole was cut, I took the hose from Zara, and began to insert it into Amanda's neck. Charlotte began crying loudly. As soon as I had the tracheotomy inserted, Zara and I began CPR again, this time, I breathed into the end of the hose. I pulled off my watch, and tossed it to Gerard.

"Time us," I yelled. I could see, out of the corner of my eye, Gerard now holding my watch under his flashlight beam.

"Five minutes," he said eventually.

"Switch," Zara cried, and I jumped up, racing around her as she moved to Amanda's head, dropping down on Amanda's chest and beginning compressions.

"Ten minutes," Gerard said. Zara and I immediately switched. We worked as hard as we could, but I had known as soon as I cut into her airway that there was no hope. There was no blood. But I worked anyway, more for Zara than Amanda, as Gerard continued to give us the time every five minutes.

"Forty minutes," he said grimly, and I sat back on my heels from my place by Amanda's head. Zara continued to press against her chest.

"Zara," I said softly, and I saw Charlotte bury her head in Frank's chest, her back heaving.

"Angel, breathe!" Zara shouted.

"Zara. It's been forty minutes," I said.

"No! God damn it, get out of my way!" She pushed me roughly to the side, and continued CPR by herself. I gently put a hand on her shoulder.

"Zara, she's dead," I whispered. She continued working, ignoring me. I got to my feet, and went to Gerard, taking my watch from him, and checking the time. I went back to Zara, and knelt down beside her. "I'm calling it," I said firmly. "Time of death, 4:17 PM, EST." With that, Zara fell back into me, sobbing. I held her for a long time as she cried. "Frank," I said eventually, "Can you and Mikey take Zara and Charlotte back to the cabin? And let Bob and Tori know what happened?"

"You got it," Frank whispered, and he began to lead Charlotte back towards camp, while Mikey wrapped an arm around Zara, helping her to her feet. I quickly packed up the medical supplies, and handed them to Mikey, then he led Zara back to the cabin behind Frank and Charlotte.

"Hey Mikey!" Gerard called. Mikey's form stopped, and turned around. "Pull up the ladder, and don't let it down until we get back!"

"Ok," Mikey called back, then turned and continued walking.

"You ok, Angel?" Gerard whispered.I nodded.

"Yeah," I said, looking from him to Ray. "We have a big problem." I got to my feet, still looking at them.

"Are we sure it was Phil?" Ray asked in a whisper.

"Of course. I would have woken up if Gerard got out of bed, so unless you did it, or you suspect Mikey or Frank or Bob, then yeah, it was Phil," I said.

"Could it have been Zara? We know she was awake," Ray replied.

"Zara doesn't have the right equipment," I said, sighing.

"She was raped?" Gerard asked in horror.

"Oh yeah," I said, wiping my hand across my forehead.

"Are you sure?" Ray whispered.

"Very." We were silent for a moment, standing there, gazing at Amanda's body.

"We should bury her," Gerard said eventually, and I nodded. I bent down and closed her eyes, and straightened her slip so she was covered. Ray gently picked her up, and the three of us began to walk.

"I'll get the dust pans," Gerard whispered. "Get her some clothes, or something to wrap her in." Then he put his arm around me, and bent down, and whispered in my ear. "I think we should dig it up."

"Agreed," I whispered. When we reached the cabin, Gerard called up to Mikey to open the door, and lower the ladder, which he did, and I gathered up all of our now dry swim gear, then slowly climbed up. Zara, Charlotte, and Tori were all crying, the guys doing their best to comfort them. "Hey," I said, racing over to my bunk and quickly putting my stethoscope in my overhead compartment, before turning to the bed, and fishing my locket out of the metal frame, quickly slipping it over my head. I grabbed Gerard's permanent marker off of the table, stuffing it in my pocket, then I moved slowly to Zara and Amanda's compartment, and took Amanda's blankets off her bed, as well as her pillow, and as I turned, I jumped about a mile when I came face to face with Frank.

"What are you doing?" he asked softly.

"Burying her," I replied in a whisper. He nodded.

"If you guys aren't back in two hours, we're going to come looking for you," he said. "Shout as loud as you can if you need us."

"We will." I looked at Zara, still sobbing into Mikey's chest, with Charlotte beside her gently rubbing her back. "Do me a favor?" Frank nodded grimly. "While we're gone, pack up her things, ok? We'll figure out some new sleeping arrangements when we get back, Zara shouldn't be alone. No one goes outside alone, and as soon as I'm down, pull up the ladder and close the door, and don't open it until we get back, ok?"

"I got it," he said. I slid back down the ladder with Amanda's pillow and blanket, and watched while Frank pulled the ladder into the plane. "Be careful," he called, as he closed the heavy door. Gerard and Ray were waiting for me in the sand, I quickly turned my back on the safety of the cabin, and followed them to the spot where we had buried the rest of the bodies. We placed her body on one of her blankets, and began to dig.

I have never been into the out of ordinary plots (e.g a plane crash with two doctors, a air marshall, creepy guy and the best band in the world) but I love this fanfic. It's number one on my list of best reads <3 :)
