Who I've Got To Be
Chapter 1 : These pigs Are After Me
Run. Her breath hitched in her throat, as she pushed herself up on her feet. She felt sick to her stomach, as her eyes caught one last look towards the body laying on the dirt floor. Jason's body, the love of her life's body. They had killed him, the Bli had shot him right in the head and now they were after her.
Pounding footsteps echoed after her, her boots slamming down as she thrust herself forward. Her stomach seemed to knot up at the worst possible time. A hand wraps around her abdomen, her legs unrelenting to get her as far away from the draculoids as possible.
They had commited a big crime, Jason and her. They had had sex out of wedlock, which was a death sentence with the Bli. No one under the age of twenty one was to even think of sex or hell, even marriage. But here she was, having sex at 19 with Jason. And not only had they had sex, but she was pregnant.
Her whispy blond hair fell in scraggled loops around her face, as she risked a look back. With the desert sun beating down on her, she had to squint to see the draculoids still running. But they seemed to get distracted. Still looking backwards and trying to see what was pausing their attention, she stumbles forward.
She smacks down into the dirt on her side, an unpleasant feeling shooting up her arm. Her hands instantly cover protectively over the middle of her hips.
Celeste was terrified, not only about her current situation with the draculoids but with the pregnancy itself. She knew nothing about being pregnant. Since her parents were only allowed two children, she being the second, she had never witnessed any relatives or family members going through it. They had never taught about it in school, mostly keeping those things hidden. If it wasn't for the monthly curse, as she so called it, that came to the girls around the age of 12 she was sure they wouldn't know squat about even the difference between a boy and girl. The Bli were controlling that way, in every way really. Everything was supposed to be perfect, according to plan. Jason and Celeste had become imperfect and thus, had to be iliminated. Having a child out of wedlock was unheard of these days. No one even dared. For some reason the two thought they could get away with it, and they had. That was until Celeste got pregnant.
A pair of dusty boots appear before her eyes and she flinches. Here it was, the end.
" Sit up," a voice says. She follows the instructions, her eyes travelling up from the boots. The sun made it almost impossible to see but was that.. red hair? She almost gasped, seeing the abnormal physical trait. Red hair was against the law. Well maybe not all red, but bright red like that was certainly fake. The kind that screamed stop and stare, not a suddle orange, the kind a girl in school had. She realizes their gun wasn't pointed at her head and she looks at him oddly.
" Are you alright?" he asks, his shadowed lips moving. She nods, his leather gloved hand thrusting outward. She hesitates a moment before accepting the gesture and being helped to her feet.
" What's your name?" she could see his face better now. He had a pale complection with prominent cheek bones that only showed when he talked. She could only imagine how obvious they would be when he smiled. He had an oddly pointed nose, the kind you found on fairies in a story book. Thin lips, quite normally oval eyes. Realizing she was taking forever to answer, " Celeste," she utters out to him.
" She okay?" from the far left a voice calls out. Celeste turns her head in that direction, seeing a boy with a yellow helmet on. They were all so colorful. She could faintly read the print across the front. "Good Luck" it read. By his side was another boy with black sleek hair and a bandana over his face.
" She looks alright. A little banged up but," the red headed stranger shrugs. Celeste listens as they just openly talk about her.
" And what is your name?" she asks him, taking a step back from him. She had realized how close she had been standing, feeling a bit weirded out by him as well. He was different and so were his friends. Growing up in a white and gray world, it was scary to see so much color at once.
" I'm party poison." he says proudly. " That-" he points towards the two who she had looked to earlier. " is Kobra Kid in the helmet and Fun Ghoul with the bandana." He then points in a new direction, and Celeste turns her head to see another man with dark hair. But his was full, curly, and framed his face almost like a lion's mane. She smiles a bit at the thought. " That is Jet Star."
Taking in the names, she tries to process everything. Where had the draculoids ran off to? And how had they just randomly showed up to save her? Almost as if he was reading her mind, Party Poison begins to explain.
" We fought off the draculoids. It's kind of our thing. " he shrugs. " You're welcome."
" Thank you." Celeste's voice rings through the air as a tiny gust of wind blows her hair around her head.
" Mind if I ask why they brought you out here, to ya know.." She falls silent after that question. He seemed very pushy in a sense, or maybe it was just her sensitivity to the subject. After a minute of silence the others had reached them.
" Welcome, stranger." the one so called fun ghoul greets her, making his way to Party Poison's side. Party Poison nods to her, understanding her silence.
" Follow us and we can take you somewhere safe." the redhead says and she just nods in responce. The boys turn and she follows.
She wasn't sure what to think. Moments ago she was running for her life and suddenly four angels seemed to appear and save it just in time. But not Jason's. She conciously pulled on her sleeves, looking back into the empty desert. It looked as if it went on forever. Then abruptly all you could see was the outline of battery city, her home. The only thing she knew.
" Don't worry," the voice of Kobra Kid barks up at her side. " Where we are taking you is a lot better, safer, and funner." He had removed his helmet now, his blonde streak catching her attention. His face was thin, narrow, and his nose seemed to match that description as well. His jaw was prominent, as well as his eyes. They had a certain way of being visible with everywhere else you looked, involving his face.
Celeste gives the best smile she could manage but it quickly faulters. The rest of the walk is silent except for a few mumbles from Fun Ghoul and Jet Star towards Party Poison. Unable to understand what it was they were talking about, she just keeps her head down and feet shuffling along.
The group eventually haults and splits, opening up to a car. She takes a moment to realize the decoration on the hood, a spider. Or atleast that's what she thought it was. Encouraged to climb in and really having no other choice, she follows behind Jet Star into the car. Then they are off.
~
" I'm starving," Fun Ghoul says as he slams the car door shut.
" Being hungry is the least of our concerns." Party Poison answers. They had pulled up to what seemed to be a beaten down diner. Celeste's eyes scan over the building. It looked dirty and maybe even a bit creepy. But the four boys waltzed in like they owned the place. For all she knew, maybe they did.
She follows behind, watching every step carefully. She was honestly scared. Knowing where she was, worried her. She was out in the zones, a wastleland of criminals. A place where those unworthy of Battery City were left to die. If the stories were true, she could take one wrong step and fall into a booby trap any second.
" Oh come on, we don't have all day." Fun Ghoul teases, making Celeste's head shoot up from the floor. She had only made it through the door, when the others were already in the back.
" We don't bite." he mocks. " Unless you're a draculoid, or a scarecrow. Then we do." he tries to get a smile out her, but she only nods.
After a moment, a loud sigh floats around the room.
" That boy," he starts.
" Jason." she corrects him, shuffling forward towards a seat.
" Was he a friend? Brother?"
" Boyfriend."
" Oh wow. I'm sorry."
" I am to."
Celeste seats herself at one of the stools up against the counter. Fun Ghoul stood on the other side, hands resting on the same counter. " Is that why they brought you out here?" he continues to try and get the information out of her.
" You could say that." she shrugs. " It is part of it, I guess."
How could she just open up and spill it out to a stranger? They had saved her life, that had to count for something. " What's the other half?"
" We're not married and..." she gulps, her eyebrows furrowing as she stares down at her lap.
" She's pregnant." Party Poison's voice chimes into the conversation.
Celeste wipes the tears that were running down her cheeks. Damnit, why was she was so weak? She hated when she got like this.
Looking up at him she asks " How did you know?"
Party Poison shrugs. " When you fell, you covered your waist. Like there was something to protect. I think I understood then, what was happening. Do you know how far along you are?"
" Only a month and a week." she answers, looking back down to her shaking hands resting on her lap. She runs a shaky hand through her hair, a can of food getting set before her. " Eat up," he says. " You've got two people to take care of now."
Looking down at the food, she sees a mix of vegetables and gross looking meat. All of it was blended into some weird looking gravy type sauce, that almost made her gag aloud. Kobra Kid and Jet Star leave what she guessed to be a pantry, with more of those cans in hand. They are passed around to everyone, and they all fill in some seats around the girl.
It was silent as they ate. She watched the boys as the ate it, swallowing it down as fast as they could. They couldn't fool her, she knew they thought it was gross to. But they wouldn't dare complain, there was hardly any food around as is. She started to realize that, as they eyed the untouched food in her own can.
Taking the bent up utensil, she begins shovelling the food into her mouth. It tasted sour, wrong, and she instantly apologized to the baby in her head for the terrible food that was about to hit them.
When her can was empty, she sets it down and wipes her mouth with her sleeve. She pulls her blond curls behind her ears, feeling annoyed with them in the heat.
Celeste was a simple girl. Blond, curly hair. The kind of blond that people usually liked to call yellow because the so called real blond was that sparkling snow like white. It was long enough to reach below her bust line, but not enough to get to her bellybutton while standing. It was currently pulled back in a braid running down the back of her gray cardigan. She had bright blue eyes, that seemed to fog with gloomy thoughts more often than not these days. Her skin was pale, but it was smudged with the dirt from her fall, leaving lines across her left cheek. She had a bubbly nose, the one the was small yet stuck up in a show offy way. Her face a bit round, her lips thin and cracked from the dehydration of the last few days. Simple, atleast to her.
" She needs a name." someone finally speaks up. Every turns their head to Kobra Kid, who was looking straight at Celeste. They begin to agree and Celeste looks at them oddly.
" I already have one?" she states, questioning his statement. Fun Ghoul smirks, turning to her.
" Do you honest to god believe I was born with the name Fun Ghoul?"
Celeste frowns. " Like a, a code name?"
" Yeah, close enough."
" What about brain bomb?" Fun Ghoul speaks up after the room had fallen silent from people thinking. Celeste makes a face and he makes a playful frown.
" Electric Heart?" Kobra Kid asks.
" Eh," she shrugs.
" I kind of like that," Jet Star calls out.
" Dark Dreamer." Party Poison says. " Unless you like the Heart thing. Dark Heart could work."
" I like Dark Dreamer." Celeste says, giving Party Poison a nod. He gives a small smile in return, letting her see those gorgeous cheekbones.
" Dark Dreamer it is!" Fun Ghoul says. " I guess we should get her clothes to. And a ray gun. Ya know what Party Poison, next time we decided to pick up new people please be more prepared." he goes wondering into the back, continueing to mumble about things.
A large weight settled on her chest, making her look sadly at the three boys left in the room.
" You guys really don't have to take care of me." she says.
" We really don't have a choice in the matter and neither do you." Party Poison says, matter-of-factly. " We are here to save lives, and well. We saved yours. If you return they'll kill you the second they get the chance." he explains.
" But we're nice, most of the time." Kobra Kid glares at Party Poison for a moment. " He's right though. This is what we do."
Unsure of what to say, Celeste just sits there for a moment, starring at the floor again.
" Thank you," she finally gets out, looking up at them. She looks each of them in the eye. " Thank you for saving my life, and theirs." She looks down to her lap, thinking of the life growing inside of her.
Just then Fun Ghoul came back with a bunch of things in hand.
" You're a small girl, and well it's not easy finding clothes in the first place let alone girls clothes in a place where we are all boys." He lands a pile of things on her lap. " Which is why I'm sure half of them are men's clothes." Giving her a reassuring smile, he takes his seat to her left. Taking the hint, she gets up and goes walking the direction Fun Ghoul had came from.
She found a door, one you could easily swing open. This meant no lock. Biting her lip nervously, she walks into a room. It was similar to a storage room, but set up like an office with the furniture it inhabited. Around she could see the food, radios, clothes, all sorts of things that were basic for their survival out here.
Setting the pile of clothes on the chair, she peels the gross ones from her body. She hadn't realized how sweaty and dirty she was, or atleast her clothes were, until now. She starts rumaging through the pile, pulling out a pair of black shorts. They seemed to be womans cut. She could only hope. Searching some more she found stockings, ones that were clear except for green polkadots on them. She had seen how colorful they had dressed, did she have to dress like that to? Setting them aside, she continues looking. She finds a black tshirt with a white lightning bolt on it. She rolls up the sleeves on it, placing it with the stockings and shorts. After a few more articles of clothing she finds the jacket. Tugging it from underneath, she unfolds it. It was a leather like material, with few white and green horizontal stripes going around the forearm. The whole jacket was a dark musky gray, and the collar was a bright green that matched the polka dots on her stockings. It was almost to perfect. Slipping off her boots, she pulls the clothes on. Unsure of how it looks because there were no mirrors around but just hoping everything was on the right way, she hunts down a few things. She remembered that each of them had something to cover their face. Knowing all to well how to follow trends and try to fit in with the crowd, she easily rememberred these things. It was a natural thing to learn in battery city.
She finds a pair of knee high black socks and pulls them on over her stockings. Then came the best part, her face mask. She was searching through the drawers, when she spotted it. It was a black and white mask, crossed into an X across her eyes. She could see, there were holes. Pulling her boots on, she felt as if she could fit in now. Like she could follow their rules.
" Well, well!" Kobra Kid calls out, spotting her first. The boys turn to look at her as she walks out.
" I'll be damned. It actually matches really well, I don't know how girls do it." Fun Ghoul starts.
" Are you saying all girls are good at matching? Oh come on, do you remember that girl we met a year ago? She put orange with pink and green okay, that's not good matching." Jet Star defends. As the boys start talking amongst themsves, Party Poison takes the time to speak up.
" You look like you could be a killjoy," he smiles again.
" Killjoy?" Celeste asks.
" It's what we call ourselves, or more like what people call us I guess. My point is, I like it."
" Thanks," Celeste says, a bit proud.
Despite the world these guys lived in, they seemed very uplifted. Which only helped get her mind off of things. Any distraction was worth it, even for a little while.
" So dark dreamer, ready to go hunt some evil draculoids and kick ass?" Fun Ghoul asks. They all made it sound like a joke. But the thought of draculoids and ray guns and scarecrows was scary, to everyone who wasn't one. Everyone knew it but no one wanted to speak out the truth. No one honestly wanted to focus on the negative all the time. Especially living out in the zones, where surviving even without the threat of the Bli was difficult.
" Not so fast," Party Poison says. " She doesn't even know how to aim a raygun." he says.
" We can fix that." Fun Ghoul smirks.
" But not today."
" And why not?"
" Because we don't have the time to spare."
" Are you sure?"
" I'm positive. Now let's go."
The boys start heading out the door, pulling their face disguises on.
" Come on," Kobra Kid urges Dark Dreamer forward.
She gulps, heading back out into the energy draining sun.
" One more sweep before sun down." Party Poison says, taking the driver's seat. The boys climb in and Dark Dreamer follows. Oh god, what was she getting herself into
Pounding footsteps echoed after her, her boots slamming down as she thrust herself forward. Her stomach seemed to knot up at the worst possible time. A hand wraps around her abdomen, her legs unrelenting to get her as far away from the draculoids as possible.
They had commited a big crime, Jason and her. They had had sex out of wedlock, which was a death sentence with the Bli.
