You Don't Know What Love Is

Mikey

I stared at him. He remained on his knees before me, his tears dripping off of his jaw, his eyes fixed on me and his lips open. The only thing I could think of to do was turn away from him and close my eyes.

“Mikey,” he whispered, his breath hitching. “Mikey no, please don’t-”

“Why would you ask that?” I demanded, turning back round to face him.

“Because it’s all I want,” he answered simply, bowing his head.

“No it’s not Frank,” I sighed. “You want to be with Gerard. That’s all you want.”

“That’s why I want to die,” he said under his breath.

I stared at him whilst my mind slowly processed what he’d said.

“You’re insane,” I spat. “That’s fucking impossible Frank! No! No fucking way! There’s no way I am ever doing that! And you know Gerard will never agree to it either!”

“I know,” he whispered.

“Then why the hell did you bring it up?”

He didn’t answer. He just bowed his head in silence.

I felt like screaming at him and losing my temper completely. But I could never do that with Frank. I could never hurt him. So I just walked over to him and helped him up, taking his hand and leading him away down the pier.

He didn’t look at me once whilst we slowly made our way back through the trees whilst all the while

I was stealing glances at him every ten seconds, as if he would vanish from sight if I didn’t keep an eye on him.

“Frank?”

No answer.

“You should probably know that... that Eliza is staying with us,” I mumbled. “Well, with Gerard, but she’ll be there when we get back.”

Frank didn’t respond. His face didn’t even move. He just kept staring ahead silently, letting me tug him along through the forest. I thought that the comment about Eliza would have got some sort of reaction, but there was nothing.

*time lapse because I can’t be arsed writing about two vampires walking home in silence in the dark. Though shit*

I stood leaning against the door in my room, watching Frank as he carefully lifted the thick, heavy curtain to one side and peeked out at the sun that had just risen. He winced, stepping back and letting go of the curtain like it was in fire. He shuddered and grated his nails up his arms, turning away from the window.

I watched as Frank shuffled towards me with his head down until we were inches apart. I could see he was shaking slightly and his breath was heavy and ragged. He swallowed thickly and rested his forehead against mine.

“Mikey?” he said, his words hoarse and rasping.

I cupped his face in my hands and lifted his head to look at him. He was a sickly pale colour and was sweating, his lips turning blue and his eyes has completely transformed. His pupils had transformed and looked as if they had spilt over the iris until there was nothing their but blackness. The whites of his eyes and the iris has completely vanished.

“Frank, what’s-”

I was cut off by a pained groan and he slumped forwards, his legs giving way. I caught him before
he hit the floor, holding him up as he sagged lifelessly in my arms.

“Mikey,” he gasped, his completely black eyes glistening, swimming with darkness. “Mikey, it hurts.”

“What does? Tell me Frank, you have to tell me so I can fix it,” I demanded desperately, pushing his hair back from his face, panicking.

“My t-” he began but then stopped, his mouth hanging open and his jaw locking, his body arching upwards.

His face was contorted in pain, his mouth gaping open and his brow furrowed in agony.

“Frank, please!” I begged, shaking him.

I winced as a scream escaped his mouth and he scrambled for me frantically, his hands and arms grabbing me.

“Mikey, make it stop!”

“Tell me Frank, for God’s sake, please! Just tell me!”

“My throat! My fucking throat!” he shrieked.

I felt realisation hit me like a tonne of bricks. “Of course!”

I was so fucking stupid! Frank hadn’t drank anything which meant his body would shut itself down and he would lapse in to a coma. When the first experiments with turned vampires had happened, they’d found that if the new vampires didn’t drink blood within the first few hours, they would be subjected to hours of pain before their bodies were forced into a deep sleep that would last until they got blood.

“Frank, I need you to listen to me, please baby, just calm down,” I whispered frantically. “I’m going to make it stop, I promise, you just need to relax, OK?”

He gritted his teeth in a whimper and nodded. I scooped him up and placed him on the bed, stroking his hair and holding his hand.

“You need blood Frank, that’s why it hurts, OK? Just lie still and I’ll be back before you know it sweetheart,” I told him gently.

With that I was gone from the room in a blur of frantic movements, bursting out into the corridor. At the top of the stairs was a human, trailing after Jerome, the housekeeper.

“You!” I snapped, storming towards him.

Jerome whipped his head round. “Yes your Majesty?”

“Not you,” I spat. “Him, the boy. Give me the human.”

“But your Majesty, he’s my pet,” Jerome said, frowning.

I bared my teeth at him, snarling viciously. “Well get a fucking new one, because I need him.”

“Your Majesty, we have plenty of other humans downstairs, I’d be glad to get one for you if you want fresh blood,” Jerome answered, looking panicked and glancing nervously at the boy next to him.

“I don’t have time for that!” I hissed, grabbing the boy. “I need him now.”

With that I hauled the boy away and flew back down the corridor to Frank, leaving Jerome stood open-mouthed behind me.

I flung the door open to find Frank curled up on the bed, sweating and shivering, pained gasps coming from his mouth.

“Frank,” I whispered, dragging the boy with me to the bed. “Sit up baby, you need to drink.”

He winced and slowly sat himself up, clutching the headboard. I shoved the boy down to his knees in front of Frank, yanking his head to the side by his hair.

“Just bite his neck,” I told him.

“No!” the boy whimpered. “No, please, sir! Take me back to Master, don’t do this!”

I snapped his neck with one quick twist, impatiently sighing. “Go on Frank, you need to.”

He leant forwards, his face hovering by the dead boy’s neck before he shakily placed his hands on his shoulders and parted his lips, his fangs plunging into the boy’s neck. Frank let out a low, guttural moan, grasping the boy tightly, pulling the body closer. The more he drank the stronger he seemed to get, ripping the pet from my hands and cradling the body across his lap, his face buried at its throat.

His eyes had slipped shut and there was a steady flow of muffled moans coming from him, his body slowly rocking back and forth. I just sat back and watched, feeling slightly breathless. When Frank finally lifted his head from the boy’s neck, I just stared at him.

His face was practically glowing, his skin such a pure, pale shade of white. His eyes were big and dark but had returned to normal, the light shining in his chocolate coloured eyes. His hair was tousled and messed, falling into his eyes. His mouth was smeared with blood, his crimson stained lips parted and heavy gasps drawing in and out of them, the blood dripping down his chin in a steady flow.

He was beautiful.

I lunged towards him, shoving the dead toy aside. His arms constricted around me and our lips crashed together, my hands coming up and touching every part of his face and his hair, desperately needing to take in as much of him as I could. I pulled away and he moved down to mouth at my neck, sucking hungrily at my skin. We were both gasping and panting loudly in flurry of grabbing hands and grinding hips. His teeth nipped playfully at my jaw and I threw my head back, my eyes slipping closed in ecstasy.

“Frank,” I groaned. “God, you’re so... so fucking amazing.”

He just pulled back and stared at me, his chest rising and heaving heavily before leaning in and pressing his lips to mine once, so gently and sweetly, making me feel so many emotions at once. I felt weightless and perfect beyond description.

We just stayed like that, holding each other and regaining our breaths when suddenly behind me I heard pained, choked gasping noise and I whirled around to see Gerard stood there, clinging to the doorframe and barely keeping himself on his feet. He had been there the whole time and seen what Frank had done and witnessed everything.

I felt Frank’s horror and panic shooting through my senses as he lurched from the bed and out of my arms, rushing to Gerard.

“Gerard-”

“No,” he spat venomously as the tears formed in his eyes, spilling over and running down his face, his body shaking with pain.

He let out a sob and his grip on the doorframe slipped ad he began to fall. Frank caught him as soon as he began to collapse, lowering him gently to the ground and still holding him.

“Frank!” he sobbed, pushing angrily at hm. “Get off me!”

Frank began to cry too, his face a picture of pure helplessness and desperation. “Gerard, please! Please, it wasn’t what you think it-”

“I don’t care!” Gerard snarled. “Just get off me!”

Frank just stared open-mouthed at him, the tears falling freely now. His face crumpled and I moved towards them, bending down and helping Gerard up. He ripped himself from my grip the minute he was on his feet, staggering slightly before he regained his balance. Frank just stayed on the floor, staring up at him with pained eyes, his tiny, frail looking body shaking with sobs.

“Gerard,” he whimpered. “I love you, I love you so much! You don’t understand, I... I wasn’t...”

We both just looked down at him as he trailed off, his words soon replaced by his crying.

Gerard just swallowed and looked away, turning towards the door but stopping before he left.

“I thought you said you loved me Frank,” he whispered heavily, still trying to hold back his tears. “You should have just said! You should have told me you didn’t love me back when I told you how I felt! That wouldn’t have hurt as much as this, it wouldn’t have been as bad as lying to me!”

“I never lied!” Frank insisted, getting to his feet. “I would never lie to you Gerard, I love you!”

Gerard’s face a mixture of pain, disgust and anger. “Don’t. Don’t tell me you love me ever again because it’s not true! You’ve been lying this whole time! And me?! I was stupid enough to believe you! I honestly thought you loved me back Frank! And even if you didn’t... even if you...” Gerard started to lose his words, his moth falling to one side all of a sudden before his eyes rolled back in his head and he legs gave way beneath him.

We both dashed forwards to catch him, grabbing his motionless body. He sagged in my arms and Frank looked at me helplessly.

“Take him back to his room,” I told him, passing Gerard over to him. “I’ll go and find his doctor.”

Frank just nodded helplessly and I fled the room in search of the doctor.

*another time lapse*

The door clicked shut softly and my head snapped up to find the doctor in front of me.

“Well?” I demanded, getting to my feet.

The doctor sighed, running a hand through his hair. “He’s stable at the moment but he’s set his healing back. He shouldn’t have been up on his feet and walking around by himself yet. He’ll have to stay in bed for a few more weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed unconscious for a few days and it looks very likely.”

“Are his injuries worse?”

“He’s torn some of the stitches and completely worn himself out but none of his fractures have become anymore serious. I doubt he’ll have much memory of what happened when he wakes up and he’ll be extremely exhausted for a few days.”

“And that’s all?” I asked.

He nodded. “Yes. But keep a close eye on him. I advise he doesn’t over do it and stress himself out again or it’s probable he’ll have another episode like today and collapse.”

“OK,” I mumbled, exhaling heavily. “Thanks.”

“Not a problem your Majesty,” the doctor smiled. “Anymore problems and just come and find me straight away though.”

“Of course,” I assured him. “It’ll be alright if I go and see him now won’t it?”

“Yes. Just don’t expect him to wake up though, he’ll be out for a few more days.”

With that he turned and left and I slowly entered the room to find the curtains drawn tightly shut and the lights dimmed. It was warm and silent apart from the bleep of the heart monitor and various machines next to Gerard’s bed. Frank was sat next to the bed, his chin resting in his hands and his eyes watching Gerard intently.

I made my way over to him and sat down next to him.

“Hey,” I whispered, stroking his hair back from his face. “You OK?”

“Not really,” he replied quietly. “This is all my fault Mikey. He shouldn’t be like this. You have no idea how much I hate myself for doing this to him.”

“Frank,” I sighed heavily. “It’s not your fault. Gerard shouldn’t have been walking around anyway and he knew that. He wasn’t strong enough for that yet. And him walking in on us isn’t exactly your fault, is it? He can’t just expect to never see us like that Frank, we-”

“Mikey,” Frank said flatly, turning his head slowly to look at me. “Please. Just... just don’t say anything OK? I don’t want you to try and make me feel better about this.”

“Frank, don’t beat yourself up about this. Gerard knows perfectly well what we feel for each other and he shouldn’t have just walked in on us like that,” I told him.

“I don’t care. I love him Mikey and I feel more for him than I will ever feel for you, no matter how impossible it is for him to be with me. Gerard means more to me than you can ever understand and you know what? I don’t expect you to understand what love is. You won’t ever know what it feels like because you’re a cold hearted bastard Mikey,” Frank told me, his words turning bitter.

“I don’t think you understand what you’re saying,” I replied through gritted teeth, steeling myself and trying to hold back my anger at him.

“No Mikey, it’s you who doesn’t understand what I’m saying. You don’t love. You don’t know how to. Whatever you think it is you feel about me, it’s nothing, yeah? It’s nothing more than lust. I don’t want you out of my own free will, I only want you because of this stupid connection. I don’t have a choice.”

I shook my head. “You’re so stupid Frank. You don’t know what you’re talking about!”

“I know exactly what I’m talking about Mikey! I would die for Gerard, I would give up everything for him! In fact, I fucking did die for him! I turned myself into this, into this monster so that I could have forever with him! I love him Mikey and you can’t understand that! I wish you could, I wish more than anything you could understand that I will always want Gerard more than you, but I don’t expect you to. How could I ever expect such sadistic un-loving monster like you to know what love is?!”

“I’m not listening to this,” I snarled, getting up and storming out of the door, slamming it closed.

The moment I was back in my room, I locked myself in let myself crumble, grasping my head in my hands and sobbing beyond control.

I knew Frank was right. I was everything he had said I was, but somehow I still knew that I loved him.
