A Kiss And I Will Surrender
006
"Did you get his glasses back?" Dr. Johnson asks with a cough.
"No, we never found them."
*
I walk you home that same day and you hold my hand. Sirens wail from all around us and you begin to get nervous. I squeeze your hand reassuringly, nothing could be wrong as long as you're with me. There are a few police cars in front of our house. I let go of your hand and race forward. Our mom sits on the porch steps crying, with a big bruise on her cheek.
"Mom!" I shout towards her, she lifts her head.
"Gerard! Mikey! Come here, quickly!" she calls back.
I follow her instructions and race towards her open arms. A big police man steps forward and looks at me with a calm smile.
"Hey, buddy. Can I talk to your mother for just a moment?" He asks politely.
I decide that I like him and nod my head slowly. You finally catch up and look at me with a confused frown. I pat your head and force you to sit down on the porch next to me. You look a little frightened but I tell you not to worry.
"Who are these people?" you ask.
"They are the police, they make thing better." I reassure.
You still look uneasy, so I kiss the top of your head.
"It's alright Mikes!"
You nod your head, forcing yourself to believe me. At the time even I didn't know how wrong I was.

"Gerard?" Dr. Johnson asks.
"Yeah?"
"You spaced out there..."
"Oh, sorry..."
"So what happened?"
*
"Mom?" I ask quietly. All the police have left and the three of us are sitting at the kitchen table. Mom looks as though she just snapped out of a trance.
"What is is sweetie?"
"Where is daddy?"
"He...he's gone on a vacation."
"A vacation?" you and I ask.
"Yes."
"What's a vacation?" you ask.
"It's when you leave....and never come back."
"No, we never found them."
